  • Oh please, it was an amusing story. Hemingways' best stuff is great, but Rooney is right, Hemingway also wrote some really bad stuff. And he was a jerk. He comes across as a jerk in his own memoirs, 'A moveable feast'. He was a jerk to Hadley, He was a jerk to Fitzgerald. He was a jerk who happened to write 3 or 4 great novels and alot of good short stories.

  • @quintas73 All men and woman are jerks. As all men and woman are pricks, assholes and dicks. We are these things because life is hard and tumble. In order to survive life, you must have a stout heart and a way of thinking that is beautiful. Life is the greatest pleasure and heaviest pain. We are all born into this and we discover at birth that all hopes and dreams are distant. That whatever pure happy life you should know is doomed from the start.

  • I am a Falun Gong practitioner. Falun Dafa is a cultivation system in the Buddha School based on the principles of the Universe: 真 Truthfulness 善 Compassion 忍 Forbearance.

Since 1999 it has been brutally persecuted by the CCP in China. People are being killed, tortured, put into concentration camps and have organs harvested from live people, simply because of their belief. More than 3400 Falun Gong practitioners have died at the hands of CCP in the past 12 years.

  • Andy Rooney hated everyone.Who cares what he thought.Good riddance to bad rubbish.

  • It's funny that the top two comments represent extremes of opinion. Why can't Rooney be right, in a way, and Hemingway also be great? By most accounts, Hemingway was an immense jerk. Some of his writing did stink. Lousy anecdotes like this one are the fruits of a life spent pissing people off.

Also, Rooney has been culturally important (although, hardly to the degree that Hemingway was), so there's no need to speak about him in such harsh terms, either.

  • This is hilarious!

  • I'm a Hemingway fan, and from what I've read, yeah it's true. I mean after For Whom The Bell tolls, it is mostly awful (Old Man and The Sea is almost taken word for word, from an interview he did). He became a parody of himself after the '30s.

  • Hopefully they're in heaven together, where Hemingway is no doubt punching Andy Rooney.

  • I love this!

  • RIP Andy Rooney.

  • Fuck you, Andy Rooney!

  • Well, envy makes the best assessments....

  • You'd ever notice how some nobody always tries to diss a somebody? People still know who Hemingway was. 50 years from now - in 2061- they still will. No one will remember who Andy Rooney was in two years.

  • Thank God history won't care what Andy Rooney has to say about anything worth while. Stop talking Rooney, nobody is listening to you.

  • Refreshing!!

  • who's going to be remembered? not andy rooney, the guy who claims he always considered himself a "writer" over anything else. how come i've never read anything by you mr. rooney? because none of your writing is worth 10 seconds of my time. don't bash hemingway just because he was an asshole to you. when he's considered one of the best writers of all time. where are you on that list andy rooney?

  • Love it when someone posts a harsh critique of writing skills which is itself filled with stupid errors (spelling, grammar and syntax).

  • what a kindergarten speech !

if thats all of the prove he needs, to insult a person as a " jerk",xpecially e.hemnigway, i dont wanna know what he must think of himself, in those creepy dark moments, when he is alone and facing his demons of anger and vanity, sreaming to be feed by his frustration, that he ,even if he tryed for a hundred years, wouldnt be able to even write done a three word sentence, that would quarter as deep as mr Hemingways work.

    poor old man

  • get over yourself Rooney ya self righteous twit! Miss Mary? Pappa? who cares leave them alone ya jerk

  • So the poor little journalists didn't get 8 out of 40 rooms Hemingway reserved for himself and French heroes...poor little journalists. Rooney is such a girly-man. It's "childish" to say "Bring it on!" when someone is in your face physically threatening? Please. I would've said "Screw it, we'll sleep on the floor - the French guys deserve the rooms and Ernest let's have some brandy"

  • Nothing can touch Hemingway's great writing: the short stories and the first two novels, _The Sun Also Rises_ and _A Farewell to Arms._ Nothing else matters. These works are universal and great.

I like Rooney and his curmudgeonly opinions. However, in the realm of art, other standards apply than the personal.

  • Hemingway was an indication that even in the 1940s, the world had Douchebags.

  • Yeah Andy; you da man ...?

I like about one in 10 of your goofy 60 minute spots.

  • Whoever is taking Andy Rooneys opinion about Ernest Hemingway.......

We'll I don't want to ever know you...

Whole lot of fun you all are....

  • In our time like it or not that about sums it up. If the haves can be reduced to a 5 min puppet show on Utube what does that leave for the rest of us, the have nots?

But alas the sun also rises on the rest of us so why not Key West? Obviously there are no snows of Kilimanjaro to see there it's to warm, dah. However I'm sure ther're a few old men and the sea surrounding the joint is still filled with giant Marlin. You've got to admit it's a nobel trade.

  • I even hope there is a time when no tourists are around. Maybe Sunday mornings? It's quiet enough that you can still hear for whom the bell tolls. Anywho I'd like to keep this a very short story so suffice it to say that the natural history of the dead is that alchohol probably played a larger factor in Ernie's life than say men without women. Given that, I close wishing Ernest a farewell to arms. They can be dangerous when taking with vodka spiked dacquries. Don't you think so ?

  • At last! Someone with the nous to expose Hemingway for the overrated, arrogant, craven bully he truly was. A coward of immense proportions who desperately wanted to be a hero but lacked ALL the qualities normally possessed by heroes. A sad indictment of American society that this despicable fabrication should be so revered.

  • If you've read enough about Hemingway, you've learned that indeed, he was a jerk ...and also generous, tortured and complicated. I'll bet Andy Rooney is too, just as we all are in some way.

So, Rooney's recollection of Hemingway is hardly a definitive analysis of the man, as any single comments from any individual would be.

As far as Hemingway's writing is concerned - read the first part of Islands in the Stream, "Bimini," and tell me it's insensitive or one-dimensional.

  • @cinematagraph Well said.

  • Mary was Hemingway's last wife and his family called him Papa

and friends called him Papa. There is a great biography about him called Papa.

  • Mary was Hemingway's last wife and his family called him Papa

  • It is most likely because i am younger but i dont understand the miss mary and papa reference
