What a disturbing, twisted, messed up, dark story. And yet, some how charming and whimsical, like a nightmare version of Secondhand Lions. At least it ended on a positive note, with Jeliza finding (hopefully) a new guardian who will take her away from the madness and teach her what's right and wrong. Well done, indeed.
If Gilliam's initial intent was simply, to out weird the rest of the planet, then he succeeded, with weirdness to spare. The whole life and death theme was a bit macabre but it had a lot more going for it than just strange.
Beautiful film, well cast and acted, great sets and cinematography and very different from the standard "Hollywood" outpourings.
Great stuff heyitsmija thanks for taking the time and keep them coming.
This movie is disturbing and will leave a bad taste in your mouth, or leave you sad and melancholy for no reason.
But it's worth seeing, because the art and imagery along with cinematography are top notch, and so is the little girl's acting, since she not only plays her part, but the parts of her dolls as well.
Really horrible film. It was like a twisted Alice in Wonderland. But seriously incredible at the same time. The wee girl in it was so amazing at her acting.
Now everyone who has watched the Orphan needs to watch Tideland if they get afraid of children. Just just imagine it; if Jodelle Ferland and Isabelle Fuhrman got together and made a movie together, then that would be the story of and the glory of love. If they played sisters of course.
wow thats intense. I can understand how the end represents the 'destruction' of childhood, or simply just coming of age. but it kind of has a happier tone to me. like, jeliza-rose and dickens kept referring to the train explosion as 'the end of the world', and dickens wanted to clean away everything with the use of exploding the train, so the final scene could be like jeliza's corrupt world being 'cleaned away', and out of the ashes and rubble she can emerge and start over with a clean slate.
Damn ive watched this movie several times already. Did anyone else feel a bit depressed after watching it?
It just reminds me of what was so great about being a child. The trainwreck in the end to me represents growing up. Its like Time to stop with the fantasies and start your real life now....
I felt a little sad, but I am rather lost how to approach my own response. XD
Good insight with the train; on account the film started with a running train and she was laughing over its sound... It was a decent film; different, but worth watching.
@minsinslol Dickens, her hero, blows a hole through the fantasy world she'd created to cope with her effed-up reality...her saviour. similar to Pan's Labyrinth
That was some crazy shit i just witness! I cant believe someone really could think up some story like that! I feel less sane after watching this movie, but it was a different movie. That takes you away for a while. 5/5
I don't think it was disturbing at all... some parts were weird, but sometimes news can be much more disturbing than this, plus it's sad but not so far from reality this little girl's situation... I loved the music.
I agree with Eliza. I just didn't get it. If they just added in a plot it would have been great. The characters, the setting, everything was amazing but it was so boring because there was no plot.
That was probably the most stupid film I've ever seen in my entire life. What the hell was it even about? Floating barbie heads, swimming in wheat, crazy half blind women, mummification, drug abuse, chocolate obsession, the lack of a plot line. I mean, WHAT WAS THAT??
Had to get a English/Spanish translator to work out what allanegas said but it's a pretty good summary.
It managed to avoid being as heavy as something like Trainspotting, without become fluffy- so you were just carried along by this odd tale. Thanks for the upload.
Interesting and lovely . So much to think about . This from a man who mad my favfilm ever Brazil ...if you haven't yet seen it check t out ...thanks for downloading
I think Gilliam will receive his due unfortunately long after his death. I don't see how this was in any way self-indulgent like some critics claimed. It was beautiful and thoughtful to the point where even the disturbing elements became natural - like a child's perspective.
la película es el resultado de un extraño experimento, me gustó y me impresiona como tratan temas tan fuertes con tanta ligereza como un cuento de hadas, es el tipo de películas q me gustan, los extraños cuentos de hadas como trainspotting o breakfast on pluto
Probabily one of the best films Terry Gilliam has ever made, and by the time that final shot came up, I was in tears. It was so faithful to the original book, but it was perfect material for Gilliam, and he made it his own. Give the man more films!! :D
I'm really glad to read your comment about the book. I had never even heard of this. It's one of the few times I will watch the movie BEFORE reading the book. I'm going to get the book tomorrow, hopefully. I think I will enjoy it very much, especially if the movie was close to it.

Really touches the heart and makes you feel for the characters.
At least Jeliza Rose and Dickens. The Father made me angry, and the Dell also.
One of the best movies of the century in my opinion though! Amazing!!
