Unlv had to loose this game!! They were an Undefeated Defending National Champion (34-0), who was getting ready to serve a 3 year suspension from the NCAA Tournament!! Duke played a great game but I don't think the Rebels wanted to win because of they were payed off to loose this game!! There are rumors to this day of point shaving. The Rebels had a three on one fast break in one play of this game, and blew the lay up. They were about 20 points below there season average!! This was a fix!!!

They couldn't let precious Duke lose to Tark a second time. Anyone that watched this match-up, who was not a Duke fan, saw a game that was totally ruined by the refs. Greg Anthony was sidelined due to some awful calls...And UNC could not beat the Olympic team.

They were put on probation, but the NCAA went back on their decision because it was embarrassing to punish kids for something that happened 13 years prior to their enrollment. Still, I think it is fair to say that the last thing they want to see was Tark's team - a man they had been fanatically trying to ruin - win another championship against the good ole boys from Duke. This game seems to be all but forgotten in the annals of NCAA history, but it was a heavyweight slugfest. I was glued to my Tv set for the entire game watching Duke and UNLV slug it out.

Who remembers Grant Hill catching an errant pass and turning it into a windmill alley-oop dunk?

UNLV '91 was almost the greatest team. Unfortunately, for them, they had no bench. I believe when they played Duke, that at some point in the game, they expected to go on their typical run and put Duke away. But that run never came. And they got outcoached at the end.

A part of me wants to think that UNLV threw the game, but I was nervous the previous year when they played in the championship game. I knew Duke was a great program who was consistantly making it to the final 4 almost every year. I was shocked when we blew Duke out. The next year I thought we would go undefeated. We were blowing out almost everybody!! Duke was up for the challenge the Rebels presented. I thought that we would prevail, and have the first undefeated season since Indiana of 1976.

1) Bobby Hurley was sick in the 1990 title game, and

2) the addition of a great player like Grant Hill who could match up with Stacey Augmon.

This was one of Coach K's best coaching jobs ever. IMHO, this 1991 UNLV team, led by Stacey Augmon, Larry Johnson, and Anderson Hunt, was the best team to not win the title. UNLV's main weakness was that Augmon could not dribble with his off hand. So Coach K had Duke defend him in a way so he HAD to mostly use his off hand. As a result of that, Augmon often either turned it over or had to give the ball up quickly. Anyone agree?
