also speaking from a music major: this stuff is talented, while it may not be what you're into there is no need to call it untalented. It is different from classic rock bands, obviously- so if you don't like it, watch a video of some 80's cover band playing jump. w/e gets your motors running

music isn't about crazy (non key) guitar licks, or being able to use a basic rock beat to every song. It is about a feeling, and emotion that the audience/musician feels. Kevin Devine/Manchester Orchestra/Brand new are incredible at getting emotions out of people. And if you don't think they are talented listen to KD's new album: My Brother's Blood. His lyrics are amazing, the production of the album is incredible, not to mention his vocal melodies challenge most songs.
