@Locutus266 thanks- i still would ve taken it out . its oppresive . ive seen tmp a couple of times at cinema and obviously elsewhere and the blaster beam punctuates whats negative aboutt the film. its a strong score without it . maybe use it sparingly if have to - spocks intro on vulcan workswith BB cause its a very surreal scene - i think they use it it in that scene lol
Robert Wise had 22 years to realize he dropped the ball with this movie. The director's cut unfortunately isn't much better. It's still 25 minutes too long.
@YesWeCantaloupe Don't blame Wise, he was following Paramount's instructions that STTMP look like "Star Wars" and rely on special effects. Paramount realized their mistake and cut down on the effects and paid more attention to character dialog in Star Trek II. Wise admitted he wasn't familiar with the TV series and followed Paramount's orders. Shockingly, Gene Roddenberry was the movie's producer and went along with Paramount.
@YesWeCantaloupe It *doesn't* look like Star Wars. SW was exiting and had fun characters. STTMP looked like 2001: A Space Odyssey--another long boring movie. Wise sounded a bit more smug than you describe in his audio commentary of the DC.
@YesWeCantaloupe ST: TMP was much better than 2001: A boring futuristic business meeting, It had Jame Kirk and Posse with a new fangled look, if not for the pretty make over and a more enthusiastic music score.

@tonywhiteshow Yeah. He was probably sitting through it hoping that there would be a much better sequel. Thank God there was.
