Not only is this under-rehearsed but the organist is totally missing the subtlety of the entrances at the beginning. It's like being shocked everytime the organ comes in.
Though the tempo is pretty slow in this version and occasionally the tuning/pitch is off, the sound of the organ has to be the best I've heard in any version on YouTube so far. Its a powerful, room-shaking instrument.
hey ford9125 which tempo is too slow? The brass is in the key of the score and I can't quite figure out what you mean by the sections of the orchestra aren't together. I have 8 recordings of this work and this fits right in with the recordings I have. Have you discovered a new manuscript? Please spread your wisdom upon us, the world would love to know...
I think it's more a matter of personal taste. I've heard versions slower and faster than this one, and I think it more depends on what you're used to. I actually agree with ford9125 personally, because I'm more used to it being faster paced.
I must admit that I agree with you and ford9125 but I felt that the strings were slow but then again it's all about preference and my string experience was with far faster pieces... and I've had no experience with brass... sounds good for what it is though...
I would think with where they are playing, there is a lot of reverberation. So, I would think they played it slower to accommodate the acoustics of the building. Because, you know, if you play things too fast in a space with a lot of echo, all the harmonies and melodies start overlapping and sounds really unclear. Just a thought, take it or leave it.
It is easy to tell which of the comments come from musicians and which of the comments come from people who think they are musicians. The tempo is far too slow, the brass section can't stay in key, and the different sections of the orchestra can't stay together. There is a solution to the problem: practice, and play pieces within you ability level.

my my we have found a forum of critics here! This is a most difficult piece to perform, and I believe the group performing it has done a pretty good job. Everyone makes mistakes - no one is perfect. I've listened to many recordings, and the tempo's do not seem to be off - personal preference I suppose. Any of you check out the actual ensemble performing? Looks to me like they are a mentorship ensemble, and there are some pretty young folks performing. Bravo! Job well done!
This is too slow! And it's detuned... I can hear at least 3 violins, that play in a different key... Almost half a tone difference from the original...(I'm exaggerating a little, but still, it's unacceptable).
Sorry for being so critical, but this is a favorite peace of mine...
Beautiful recording, but it would have been better if they actually followed the composer's score. I think they took too much liberty in how they played the piece.
What a lot of posers in this thread!! :P

its nice how he organ is much more predominant in this recording, however, the missing brass hights are missing

Sad, just sad... Please see the Radio France Philarmonic performance at Royar Albert Hall to listen to a truly magnificent performance of this piece.

Seems to be a trumpet, 2 horns and tuba missing in the brass.

OMG!!! Organ is hideous and whats up with the brass section!!! Did they even practice!!! YIKES!!!!!

Der Organist kommt mit dem Tempo nicht klar und hin und wieder setzt es ein paar falsche Töne.

In the event of my death I want the organ parts during 2:09 to 2:59 played at my service. Lol. I'm serious.

Needs about one more month of practice to get the orchestra playing the right notes, and the organist too. Nice organ, who is the builder?
maso608 2 years ago
@maso608
The Schantz Organ Company from Ohio

far too slow, its a presto movement not largo
joeyboi87 2 years ago 2
the organ sounds superb, i can barley hear the piano
gamecrazy132 2 years ago
Isn't this the 4th movement? not the 2nd?
danispirit 3 years ago
It's the last half of the 2nd movement (onwards from Maestoso). The symphony only has two movements, not four as usually.

Folks...you're critiquing an orchestra of mostly area high school-age students with some ringers. Cut 'em a little slack.

i agree kc7sqd. which parts in specific are you referring to?
mastress328 3 years ago 11
2:12, 2:18, and 2:36 when the organ joins the orchestra, the chords are off.
3:38 to 3:53, the brass section needs a lot of work.
4:30-4:55, the tempo is horrible (the tempo is not the best throughout the piece, but here it is the worst).
4:56 to the end, the orchestration is just not right.
