The hosts are being disingenuous with the caller around 30:00. He was saying that he will believe something, at least one thing, if it makes him feel good, on the condition it is unfalsifiable. I love what Matt said about religion and politics because I totally agree. I don't have a problem with a religious president. Where it becomes a problem for me is when their religion is going to affect every decision they make even if it would have a really bad outcome. That I would have a problem with. A president that's religious, but understands they're running a free country and not a church I have no problem with.
Great show - my 2 favorite hosts! Tracie is so awesome. Since Tracy & Matt both come from a theist background, can sure understand and empathize with the struggle one can go thru on their journey from theism to atheism.

I've actually got no criticism for people who admit they choose believe something without evidence. That's pretty much the definition of faith; just don't pretend it's something else. I'm not capable of that kind of belief myself, but it seems to comfort people.

Heaven is a great promise to a soldier going out to give his life for some so called good cause. If the soldier thought that there was no afterlife he might think twice about getting himself killed. This is likely the whole reason for the new testament story, political needs of the kings waging war and controlling the ignorant masses. I would assert that crippling someones ability to be taken seriously because you have filled their mind with a bunch of "harmless" beliefs has caused very immidiate and direct harm, not just to the persons ability to percieve and accept reality, but you have also impeded their ability to get a science related job, not to mention impeding their ability to deal with trauma or otherwise interact in a socially dependent environment.

great episode. my two favourite hosts, and my favourite type of calls - the ones where they disagree with the callers are more fun. delighted ruben's still around - matt's exasperation with him is a treat. the last caller's attitude was bizarre, but it was an interesting call because hers is a position i haven't heard expressed on the show before - and one weakeness in TAE is that it goes over the same ground a bit too much. id like that caller to ring back and flesh out her thoughts a bit more

I love Matt & Tracy, but the caller made them look foolish. MD seems to think you stop looking for truth once you have a belief. WHAT?!?!? If that were true there would be no such thing as an "operating assumption". People constantly believe something and act as if it is true, but understand that belief isnt knowledge, so they keep looking. Isnt that patently obvious?! They made other gaffs. Like not seeing that happiness is an uber-rational heuristic for choosing a belief in some situations

Matt sets himself up as a pseudo judge of what truth is and what is fallacy. His attack on faith is effective. He deny's what others believe to be true. in this way he don't have to postulate that our world works well with a God just as his works well with out one. Asking "what is god," is as silly as asking what colour is luck. . Religious people are really missing their point. Truth is a relative term. There is no end to discovering. For now, my God is merely a concept, a good one as well!

Difference between callers Ruben and Devin: Ruben is borderline retarded (not trying to be insulting, this is an actual description of his suspected I.Q. range). Devin has probably an average I.Q. and is a perfect example of how a little bit of knowledge can be far worse than none at all. Apart from his political vote, Ruben will probably cause little harm. Devin on the other hand might end up becoming a politician.
