I just read an interview with Madonna and she says that Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" video is an update from this song of hers and that you can tell from the music cords. I don't hear any resemblance at all. I think Madonna is just jealous of Lady Gaga.. :-p

Like I said earlier, the media and fans created the chaos, Madonna simply responded elegantly to it with a bit of humorous sarcasm on 20/20. Using the word "Reductive" is just priceless.
There are only a few segments in Express Yourself that have a vague similarity in sound to Born This Way. Certainly not enough to call GaGa a copycat, not even close. The verbal messages are almost completely different, only enough to suggest a crude similarity in a few places. The imagery in Born This Way is totally unrelated to Madonna's. Not enough similarity to suggest that copying was a factor, just a coincidental association because both performers are Italian females of a similar ilk.

Hate to say it, but play about 10-15 seconds of the video at 2 min 13 seconds in. THEN go to (youtube.com/watch?v=1II2nPmBZJk) It's the Staple Singers doing RESPECT YOURSELF. Go to about 59 sec and play it. Sound familiar? Even the song title! Just sayin'...........

@jtpollock yes I can hear that without even listening to "Respect Yourself:" because I know that song well. The Staple Singers song is slower but yes I can hear the similarities - wonder if anyone else thought that, maybe when "Express Yourself" first came out. I don't remember - too long ago. @tubucoco Well, when you look at the lyrics of Gaga's "Dance In The Dark" she does the "Diana/Jean-Benet Ramsey" part which resembles the lyrical part in "Vogue" where Madonna pays tribute to the names of Hollywood glam stars...
Also, during the "Born This Way" Grammy performance...notice how all Gaga's dancers are "Voguing" with their hands exactly the same way as the dancers did in Madonna's Vogue video.
