What chance did (do) we have when the FA had people like Charles Hughes sat round the table? This guy's coaching manuals set this country back decades in terms of skills.
watching this for probably the 5th time now and although people slag it off you got to undersatand how hard it is to be a national manager, especially england, and with phil "yes boss" neal and lawrie mac by his side its no wonder, taylor was a true gent all through this doc and he strikes me as a very intelligent and astute man, with so many ego's in one team at one time i dont think any manager at that time could have done a better job
@benmarks1984 yep, I've pretty much heard the same thing. I heard they didn't consider Venables back then because they simply thought he was too settled at Spurs and wouldn't be interested so they didn't approach him!. This was about the time he was involved in buying Spurs with Alan Sugar.
even then, at 26, Gazza was really starting to pile on the pounds. You'd think he'd have learned to look after his body whilst in Serie A. The Italians just gave up on their "Inglese stupido" in the end.
charles hughes!.the man who put us behind the rest of the world for home grown coaches.the great brian clough once asked him to do a tv debate he refused.he spen a million pounds on direct play as he called it.taylor, john beck, dave bassett all were hughes first coaches to pass there badges.say no more!!!
Why the f....didn't they give the job to Howard Kendall in 1990? He had the pedigree of atcually having won trophies with Everton, had managed abroad and done well in Spain, and had been a very good player too.
Look at the FA board on 1.00, just old farts waiting to die. Advicators of the long ball game headed by Charlie Hughes and his 'modules'. An absolute disgrace.
That's a poor excuse for England's poor showing in '93. English clubs were still banned from European competitions in 1990 and that year England reached 4th place at the World Cup in Italy so it proves that the ban didn't have any effect on the England team whatsoever.
I don't wish to patronise you, but you would have been pretty young at the time of the 90 WC, so let me assure you that England were shite at that tournament as well. In fact Bobby R got at least as much flak as GT and much of it was well deserved.
Besides, In my earlier comment I was just making an observation, one that is widely accepted as being correct, I wasn't necessarily using it as an excuse for the teams poor showing as most of us know that England are very often awful, ban or no ban
charles hughes? introducing coaching modules?!! fuck me!! another blazer trying to muscle in. i must admit, i was 1 of those screaming 4 taylor 2 go but i was only a 13 yr old kid in 1993. i kinda feel guilty watching this now. fundamently, the F.A. are definitly the problem. taylor was out of his depth at this level for sure but looking back, alot of the stick he got was nasty & over the top. from the press in particular. anyone wuda thought he was Fred West or sumthin. from a Liverpool fan.
Got to agree with most, the FA are a group of old gits(none having played at a decent level!!).Total joke, but thats the fa for you, jobs for the old boys eh??
who the fuck is that old cnut to doubt Gazza. I can't believe England managers are subject to meetings like that. Loads of grey haired old blokes waiting to die sat round a table discussing Englisg football. That has really wound me up!
look at all the posh F.A knobs thinking they know what there going on about they ant got a clue 15 years on an they still ant got it right, shud all be shot an let the england manager get on with it.

The European ban hit the English game really hard. Taylor's a decent bloke but the game had moved on a fair bit since his Watford days.

Swailes looks like the child catcher from chity chity bang bang?
2 problems with us =
1, all those twats sitting around that table with the exception of Taylor and Kelly [who actually care about the game]
2, The press are a bunch of negative f#cking c@nts [Joe Kinnear got it spot on!]

Taylor comes across as a total gentleman and, despite results, he didn't deserve the level of vitriol from the tabloid press

Who was that he's in make-up with, I recognise his face but can't name him.

yup, say what you want about Taylor, Sven and even McClaren but there's the problem with English football sat round that table there.
