Been on YT for a long time, but every once in a while you run across something like this... wow... unbelievable soul, tone, mastery of the blues guitar.
I remember when Kirk used to play slide for Richard Clapton - Deep Water, Capricorn Dancer, Lucky Country. Goodbye Tiger was a great album but the slide guitar was the best thing about it. I met Kirk a few years ago when my band supported Brian Cadd at a local RSL. He is a nice guy only too happy to talk about slide etc. He'd just started his Planetalk project.
@MegaDutchdude ... thanks, mate. I like having those three bass strings as two roots and a fifth. Lets me play a fat power chord ( 2:21 ) witht he slide when I want.
a VERY, VERY, VERY GOOD EXAMPLE OF HOW THE RIGHT HAND (or should I say) THE PLUCKING HAND IS TO CORRECTLY PLAY AND DAMPEN THE STRINGS ! Most people pay attention to the slide hand and are not really sure of what to do with the other hand. KUDOS FOR THE CAMERA ANGLE. By the way, your playing, and especially your phrasing, are exceptional. = )
I rarely if never write comments on videos, because I only write comments when something is truly good, and the person is truly talented, but today I will write a comment and say this guy is AMAZING.
@Face0fRoadkill1213 ... the ones I use (and sell) are pretty loose on my finger but most people like them tight. Whatever you get used to, basically. You can always pad the loose ones ... mine are 3/4 inch inside diameter.
@planetalk there is strings that . instead of being round thy are a tirangula shape. this may be what thy mean by glass strings leppardnigel@yahoo.com
wow..I've been playing blues harmonica for over 35 years and i just bought a guitar and am learning slide...i am totally humbled at your mastery of slide,,kinda wished i took up the guitar when i started playing harp. You sir..are an inspiration hope i can play one 3rd as good as you.
When you said heavy I almost freaked, but you do have a medium kind of top. Man, how you manage to tune a 16 to an E is beyond me. I'm too much of a baby to tune a 13 to E.
@northernsurvivor Because if u use it the in ring finger you can fret notes after the slide and before , using it in the Pinky finger only let u fret notes before the slide get it ?? =)
Heavy gauges do make strats come alive a bit more. I played a lighter gauge for 12 years and the strat felt like a toy. Once the .012's went on, it felt like it finally had the strength it needed.
My wife's mad at both of us now. Since I discovered your videos, I spend a lot more time on my slide technique. Drives her crazy cuz I like to practice about twice as loud as she wants me to. Rock on! Hope your posts inspire a new generation!
Very tasty... Not to compare you to anyone because you def shine on your own, but when I close my eyes, I kind of get an old Jimmy Page vibe in my head. I really love the last minute or so when you really get cranked up.
Man, I have been listenin to blues as long as I can remember, and your technique is VERY different from most players, a more subdued kind of style, fluid and fast without appearing all that fast, similar to Lowell George from Little Feat. I could tell right off that you weren't a scale walking hack like you see a lot of in blues. Well Played Sir!!! ~Rob
very cool! ive been playing for a year and a half now, and ive been really intrigued by slide guitar. is it easy enough to fiddle around with or do i probabley need lessons to figure it out? because i really want to buy a slide to mess around with. any help would be great, thanks
Wonderful! I hate using a pick, prefer my fingers, I like playing in standard tuning or dropped D but I thought slide had to be in open tunings, and I don't like scales, I think more in chord shapes.
Now I see you do all these things and sound just fabulous. It's a breath of fresh air. Thank you Kirk.
This is at the top of my list of the best and most interesting slide I have ever heard and with the most soulful tone of all time. I love Derek Trucks and I date all the way back to Duane Allman along with my '61 Strat and I would kill to be able to do what you just did hear. Nice work, Brother! By the way: I stripped the paint off of my Strat back in the 60's and it looks just like yours. You, me and Bonnie Raitt.
Hey Kirk! I have your Plane Talk instruction book (comic style) explaining the three basic shapes of all chords - helped me out tremendously! Ordered it about a year ago. Good to see you on Youtube! It's great to hear you after going through the book.
I can't remember if I touched the bridge. That guitar has been the same for the past twenty years at least. I don't think I did though. I don't think I'd like it if all the strings were flat.
What's the name of that color for your stratocaster? Or did you just refinish it? I'm trying to find one that color, like that Stevie Ray Vaughan dark brown wood. Great playing by the way.
@hiphopsucks96 ... it was 37 year ago that I did it, but I remember using paint stripper -- lots of it -- and a lot of elbow grease scraping away at it. There were quite a few layers of paint and primer. When I finally got down to the wood, sandpaper. I sanded away that angle where the body bends around, made it all sleek and streamlined. Had a lot of fun doing it, but probably reduced its value by a factor of 1000!
Please tell me you did not use your RP on this recording?????? If so it blows a whole lot of holes in the "must have analoque theory.....and I'm taking my ears back to training school...lol
