This version has an additional verse never recorded anywhere about Donovan's friend and tutor Derroll Adams. Derroll Adams travelled extensively with Jack Elliott as well , but Derroll stayed behind in Europe while Jack returned to the U.S.A.
Video from Pete Seeger's show "Rainbow Quest" that ran in the 1960's. Check out other clips from that series. The raw black and white scenes only add to the authenticity and 1960's history.
i must say something...pete seeger is FOS, as a young person i was a cop working the greyhound bus strike at 42nd &8th ave at port authority bus terminal in NYC circa 1980-82?. we were family with the greyhound people. we supported them and that includes the brass. seeger came along and starting talking sh-t on how the police are your enemy! the cops are no good etc. well you should have seen the reaction on the greyhound's people faces. My message to seeger ..you are a J.O.!
Try to keep your comments related to the music, eldudareno.. No one viewing this video cares about your personal opinions of Pete Seeger. The Guy just turned 90 the other day.. my message to eldudareno.. you are FOS and a JO...
I agree with your music related comments.............but, I don't mind at all hearing someone's real life experience with someone. I don't have a clue about the incident he's talking about, but it sure as hell made a lasting impression on him. I don't care one way or the other. I enjoy these guys for what they all did, including Pete Seeger, and I'm a big Donvan fan. Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan made the Byrds famous! So eldudareno's comments add a little color - so what - its all good!
what chord progression was donovan using? this is different from his original version, i think? anyone....? it looks like c, g, dm, am or something to me.
ah...thank you hms. I love this guy so much that I've tie dyed a new t-shirt in his honor and have added this song to our little group's program. Alas, we have no Seeger banjo, but we do have our memories. Peace...
The angle that they filmed this is weird having pete seeger's back to the camera. I wonder why they did that. I noticed it on a couple of the rainbow quest vids.
the "new" verse perfectly represents the direction donavon was about to go in with "Sunshine Superman" and offers a good contrast between that style and his earlier work as a dylan-influenced folk singer.
@acidkilledjazz donovan was influenced by dylan nonetheless but it's more true to say that they came from the same place, Woody. Dylan and Donovan were pretty much doing guthrie ya know?
THX for the encouragement. The only things I've ever been able to play are phonographs, cassettes, and CDs. But I do appreciate the thought.
I am however a vital part of the production of music; someone who appreciates the talent in others and the pleasure it brings. It's not curing cancer but it is quite often a powerful emotional pallative. It exists for its own sake.
I did make a little music once borrowing a friend's bass with a record tutorial that had some progression like AAAA AAAA AAAA AAAA EEEE EEEE AAAA AAAA DDDD BBBB AAAA AAAA (prolly got the A,B,D, & E'S wrong here but remember it actually sounded like a cool song instead of just doing scale or chord exercises).

Peter Seeger is still alive! I wonder if he still plays banjo? Wouldn't it be great to have him and Donovan recreate this?

So? So how exactly does that make him full of shit?
He was born in 1919. He said some bad things about cops in 1980. How does that make him full of shit?

@moriluk
It's true what he said. Cops are the enemy. And I don't say that lightly or for any reasons other than Seegers's

@eldudareno You supported the brass and you wonder why Pete Seeger says you were the enemy? He's a rather gentle person and you are the enemy!
RadioReporter01 1 year ago
@eldudareno the bus is a symbol of public/altruistic intent - seeger is thinking from a socialist premise
the police represent the symbol of thug/force that was being misused by a perverted capitalist agenda.
the police are an instrument such as a soldier is.
always examine your premise....

I'd say its because Pete Seeger is a folk legend, I don't thin he's know for his cinematography!
