Big night arrives and mixes snow

Why do not you sleep, little baby?

Our neighbors are sleeping (that are polar bears).

So do you go to sleep.

We are sailing on the ice as on a beautiful boat

    On the stern gray seas.

All night our neighbors (that are the stars)

To shine on the road for ships.

  • This is beautiful. I've always wanted the old days of cartoons to come back. Everything just seems like it was so much better back then.

  • Hey, I was brought here by Regina Spektor through her Facebook account :) Anybody else? :) BTW, awesome animation. There were some great animations made in Russia. I'm from Poland so I also know quite a lot of great Polish animations. Cartoons in those years had real soul and were made with heart and passion.

  • I always thought, that only great kind cartoons like this can teach kids love, friendship, tenderness ...

  • Ути, медвежонок умка=))^_^ Лапа=))^_^

  • Kyle from South Park looks a lot like the kid on this film...

Anyway, great bit of animation history, wish it had subtitles though, they really ought to publish all of these officially with subtitles.

  • To this cartoon film of 49 years.

  • you can find with english subtitles. type "umka oom-ka" in the search

  • iTS MUCH BETTER THAN AMERICAN SHIT THAT SHOW IN CARTOON AND NICKELODEON... PURE SHIT..no education at all

  • I agree. Except for the cartoons in the 90's. THOSE were great fucking times. Why else would an American kid wake up at 5 in the morning on a Saturday? lol

  • @hopsc22

This is soviet cartoons. Now we have cartoon, jetx, nickelodeon certoons in Russia too

  • I used to watch this with my brother when we're kids! I am now shoing it to my son, he loves it. :)

  • I'm afraid it wouldn't be easy for me, because:

    1) i don't know how to do that (though i might learn)

    2) more important: even if I knew how to put subtitles, I wouldn't be able to synchronise them: that's something a speaker of Russian should better do. any idea?

  • Boy - 4:54 - What are you doing? Why are you sniffing me?

Umka - 4:58 - Mother was telling me that you smell with smoke.

Umka - 5:03 - But you smell with milk.

Umka - 5:09 - And you don't have a tail. Maybe it will grow out?

    Boy - 5:17 - That's foolish!

Umka - 5:21 - Strange... He has two heads.

  • Boy - 5:48 - Hey there! You! What's up!

Umka - 5:53 - You got two heads. And have only one.

    Boy - 6:01 - This is not a head, it's a hat!

    Boy - 6:04 - Head is here.

Umka - 6:07 - Aaah.. why don't you have hair growing on your nose?

    Boy - 6:12 - Uhm.. I have no idea.

That's a minute for you. Will this work?

I obviously have to work on my translation thought.

  • Thanks for the sample. I'va taken a look at how to make subtitles and will need some time to try and learn. As I'm busy at work, this will have to wait for some spare time - but I'll do it. Please also bear in mind that I'm no native speaker of English (I'm Italian and work as a translator), so maybe some English native speaker will give us a hand on that. Cheers from Italy

  • for the poster: wouldn't be possible to put subtitles in english so as to reach a larger audience?

  • if you are willing to do that - i might translate it for you.

  • i'm russian btw.

  • molto bello!

shame that such cartoons are not known as they deserve. there was a really great illustration and animation tradition in the USSR.

  • Mother bear: Do you know how to build a good cave? Ill teach you; itll be useful for you to know. You have to use your claws to dig up a hole and lay comfortably in it. The snow will cover you, and when a snow hill grows above you, begin to turn around, arch your back, and raise the ceiling. And thats how youll have your own cave. Warm, like ours.

    Baby bear: Wont I suffocate?

Mother bear: No, from your warm breath a hole for air will appear.

    Baby bear: Thats good.

  • Предивно!

it actually brought tears to my eyes...... it reminds me of chilhood, it's so pure and good...... love the stories and the characters! :)

russian cartoons are the best..... shame today's kids know nothing about these...

  • there are no more cartoons like this

back then there were such nice cartoons

  • Two heads :D

  • o0 that was one of my favorite russian cartoons as a kid

  • lechebnie multfilm lechit mnogie bolezni

  • really nice cartoon! has anyone got sheets for the last song?? i'd be grateful:)

  • Haha! "People are such bears that always walk on two hind legs and can take off their fells."

    lol! I love it! :)

  • I could almost cry! Simply beautiful. They don't make so nice cartoons anymore. I've always admired Russian cartoons. Full of emotions, astonishing, loving the life, sadness, melancholy. This one is a prime example! THANK YOU and to Mother-Russia!

  • they do

  • respect!

    i agree

  • @roncstelep It is because the culture is SOCIALIST rather than RUSSIAN. Stop thinking in the false nationalist cathegories that the antihuman capitalist culture imposes on you!

  • @valtih1978 Hey, man what the hell do you talking about?I was born and grew up in that era and absorved the artistic and the idealistic background of it all regardless of what certain country it came from.I agree:capitalism is antihuman and has no culture,so I have nothing to follow after them so I can't easily be misslead.....

  • @roncstelep The fact that we were born in socialist era in Russia does not change anything. You was mislead and mislead others when claim that the USSR produced good movies due to national character rather than communist ideology.

  • So USSR wasn't able to produce good movies, maybe even with communist ideology or rather without,if it was based on national character?Or didn't they had any nationalism?Or more simply:there were good USSR movies? Why they were good because of the ideology or by their roots? How do you rank the Cranes are flying,Moskva slezam ne verit,Tarkovskij's incredible work of art: Stalker,Solaris to name a few which lacks both:the ideology and a kind of national character.Cheers

  • @roncstelep Yes. Look at what happened with the national character as soon as the communism failed! Sotialists used to reveal the national characters better than they are in reality. Even wild animals were drawn heartful and humankind in socialist culture, as you see in the cartoon. It was a socialist program to cultivate the good character in people. As soon as people have destroyed the socialism to be free to express their "good characters", we see that noting good comes out.

  • I partly agree. But characters in the real-arts are always accented this way or that way, incl.every possibile cartoons for children no matter which nationality it belongs. For example Tarkovskij revealed his main figures accordingly to express the fight within a man and apart from it all,the goodness wins sometimes. There are community where the people may show similar goodnes despite of their real nature and it's because of their ideology,so the social.wasn't necessarily lied then.

  • Respect to Russian cartoon makers!!!

  • I have never seen soo much beauty in one animation before. Untill now. Sadly i dont understand a word, but this cartoon is just soo nice. ^_^

  • I agree. I didn't understand a damn word, but it was adorable. Plus, I love hot Russians. OXprodigyXO @ Yahoo.

  • I love it sooo much!

  • thank you for this!

  • This computer can't make me hear the sound,

    but how nice these images!

That's why I like many russians am missing the USSR, especially from the Sixties to the end.

Note that I remain an anarchist and I hate govenments

and their submission to esonomy, but there was a general underground feeling that I would try again nowadays. In every country you were, life seemed to/could have a sense: now it hasn't.

So thank you wehack4you for posting this.

    John Blacksad

  • Hey guy, before you start calling people morons, maybe you should learn to speak russian instead of acting like it. "вы 20 лет старых"??? That makes no sense at all. I think you meant "вам 20 лет". Instead of acting like you know everything about the CCCP (including the language, which you obviously do not know) because your girlfriend lived there, maybe you should try and experience the country for yourself. "LOL MORON!"

  • didn't I say in my previous post "she's gonna translate the cartoon for me I don't know much russian." Oh on the CCCP, i remember growing up in fear that I had 45 mins to live when they launched against us. And she grew up in leningrad, I once said "all that stuff i heard about your country growing up was just propaganda right?" She replied well, we always had toilet paper.

  • SHe wes a "young pioneer" (Communist girl scout) MANDATORY! until they kicked the jews out. It took months for me to convince her it is ok to be a jew. It was always "Well, I have hebrew blood." She became a christian in 1990, before then that was a jailable offence(the religion was the state)even during "glastnost" she remembers having to have "travel documents" to take a bus to Moscow!

  • Her mother told her of people disapearing and people accusing each other of being "unpatriotic" witch under stalin resulted in "deportation" to a siberian gulag. forced labor (conscription) to fix the walls of the canal that stalin built in the 30's as late as breshnev in the 70's! her father spent 3 years in prison for his political views!

  • No I don't know what Syberia is.

Could you explain it to me?

Last time I went to Siberia it was nice though;)

  • "until they kicked the jews out"

"even during "glastnost" she remembers having to have "travel documents" to take a bus to Moscow"

    Nonsence.

    Nonsence.

  • "The CCCP that the 20 year old longed for was a shit hole Evil Empire"

    Sir, you idiot.

  • What a terrible nonsence you talk!

  • I was wrong and mean to name call. The CCCP and the Russian Federation as it is now are as different as apples and eggs. The podrooga has a few "issues" as a result of her upbringing in that athiest wonderland and I got a little worked up when a 20 yr old wanted that scocialist paradise back. we go to tyumen in august with a stop in st.pete's (as was the original name)to see her mom and brother. so I will experience Russia. like said I can't go to the CCCP I don't have a time machine.

  • as for the for the language I'll be conversational by the trip(i hope) With some patient loving tutoring from her, and some study on my part(i know the alphabet) and some familiar words (autopilot, film, complex, automobile, sex(cekc none of that till marriage lol) etc.) I'll do fine. Not to be smart, how old are you anyway? and look at the details(i said i didn't speak it, cccp back, nothing against the current country. etc, etc) i apologise to that woman for calling her moron.

  • We know such public from Bryton Beach and their constant lies and hysterics.

  • this is a true classic, an amazing cartoon. i will raise my kids on this!
