This song is about living and overcoming difficulties in his life style, and having to deal with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder. Also, he has multiple personalities that are saying two different things. The one that you hear more clearly in the song is the stronger one and the one he is saying out loud. The other voice you hear in the background, is the one in his head and it's thinking about suicide..(the long goodbye) because he is tired of living that way, reassuring himself falsely.

That asthma thing you're talking about also sounds like a side effect. The problem with modern medicine is that we're still don't fully understand the human body and a truly effective way to deliver the drug. You get side effects because the drug affects other parts of the body that we actually don't want to. It's something unfortunate that we have to deal with in medicine. As bad as some of the side effects sound, they generally rarely occur.
