This was the very first #1 hit for Kay Kyser and his Orchestra. Released as Brunswick 8225, it lasteed 11 weeks on the hit parade starting the week of December 3, 1938. Ginny Simms, Harry Babbitt and even Kay himself (narrating) are heard vocally.
Our Mama taught me this song many yerars ago. We've been having rain, and I find myself singing it over and over and over while working -so had to come home and make sure my words were right! How WONDERFUL this fitting video to go with this luscious music! Thank you! I feel like Mama is with me again when I sing this.
Oh how wonderful - it makes me feel warma dn tingly and very tearful!! Have taught to my old reception class and am ready to teach to my Nursery class now - this vidoe would be great to show the children but unfortunately the school internet access blocks you tube - how could I get a copy of your wonderful video? Please help!!??!! Helen
Sure do. It was the episode New Look. In face, if you check youtube there is a video; search: "are you being served, new look 2/3", and you'll find it at 7:36 into that video. =]
my grandmother used to sing this song to me when I was small, and then to my son when he was small, sadly she's since passed away but this song brings back so many happy memories.. I was never happier than when I was with her.. Thanx for posting!!
This was a song my parents would sing to as a fell asleep as a boy. I have never heard the recorded version. Brings back some grea memories. Thanks for posting.
@chidave ,You are a Godsend. I heard my mother sing this song about 60 years ago. Amazing fact...we're 100% from India, and I never thought I'd ever hear this and so may other oldies on record. You are a great blessing to us old codgers!
This is my Daddy's song! He would sing and dance to this song during our Scottish family Céilidhs. Dad was well known for singing and dancing to this song...we played it at his funeral...everyone laughed and cheered!
This classic dates way back into the '30s, when Kyser still recorded on the Brunswick label. Most of his bigger hits came later, on the Columbia label.

Try the French version " la valse au village" sung by Jean Sablon, i feel it captures the "jollity" of the song far more than this.

Remember the hit song by Kay Kyser, The Ferryboat Seranade. There is a video of Al Bowlly singing this song on YouTube.
