To answer all your questions. The thing that the pen goes in is the pen base.

I always use bic round stix and you have to take the ink tube out n bake according to clay instructions.

The animal print one is actually supposed to be a lace cane made out of a bunch of bulleye canes put together.

@littlemisstootsie if you use BIC pens, they don't burn. Just make sure you take the ink tube out first.
