@Mikkedev Well, I wouldn't know what rules are broken here because I haven't seen the movie, I've only read the book. I'd love to see it; maybe someday it'll get a North American release. Hollywood does put out very shallow scifi movies like Transformers, not to mention James Cameron's Avatar, which ripped off the Strugatsky brothers, anyway. I do like the visuals I see here. Nineteen Eighty Four, another book that is anti-fascism, is required reading in most schools in the USA. I've the Strugatsky brothers' work, and I would love for this movie to be released here. The problem isn't the message, because I guarantee this movie would get at least a cult following in the USA.

i have to say, the novel is so much better, but this movie is good, the visuals are stunning, the actors are good, the cuts fight scenes etc are well made, the only problem is: the left too many things out. And now i'm talking about cheep things, for example Maksim can see in dark, can feel radiation and can eat "rad-food" and this "love-story" was too serious... but i like it, i would recommend it with the book.

The most impressive sci-fi post-apocalyptic saga ever, nearly 4 hrs (part I+II) of stunning images and clever narrative, addressing the essence of historical flaws throught the ages, with clever hints to classic myths and actual political issues, power battles, world wars, communism, nazism, terrorism and nuclear fear. A shame it is not distributed in the rest of the world!

@vegaspimp222 US is the only country that can splash out insane amounts of money on a movie. Even if a movie is a disaster, they still can afford to lose money because they will just make a few more. For example this is the highest budget movie in Russia, about 36 million dollars. In America they spend this amount on kids or chick flicks and can easily spend 100 million or more on serious or action/thriller movies. Of course budget is not everything, but it helps a lot!

@0ttawan This movie's story is not stolen. It's based off a 60's or 70's russian book written by Arkadij and Boris Strugaccy. America is not the country which invented everything. In fact it is one of the youngest countries in the world, so look up to the older people, and stop being so ridiculous trying to look down on them. No pun intended.

@0ttawan Well the movie isn't great i'd rather keep to the book, but if you mean visuals it's like saying any movie with slow motion in it, is a copy of matrix, which is well, not true. Stories in CoR and Inhabited island are Completely different. Trust me. :P

This is the first part of an excellent two parts Russian made sci-fi. In fact the two parts together to worth to see. The main idea is a critisism of a well known political era in the former USSR. The film has got a kind of feeling, which is very impressive and sometimes suprising.
