  • This is the best performance of this song I've ever heard or felt BEAUTIFULLY done!

  • Absolutely awesome... great duo, great song, fantastic performance, BRAVO!

  • Comment removed

  • best duo.. love the sound of their voices together.

  • Emmylou just keeps getting more Stunning.

    Her Voice is Unmatched.

  • Vaya dúo feo! Quedan fatal estas dos voces unidas. COMPARAD CON GRAM PARSONS POR FAVOR! Y veréis lo que es una canción que te va emocionando a cada momento más...

  • too slow ZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZ ZZZZ

  • Gram and Emmylou will always have the best version, but this is pretty good.

  • I can listen this song over and over and I like it . I think Elvis and Emmylou put their whole heart when they sing this song

  • The guy singing in Nazareth sounds like a dying animal. Gram & Emmylou do the best version, soulful! Outside of the Everly's of course.

  • Costello * Harris is definitely NOT Knopler & Harris, which is sublime.

  • @mahajohn Knopfler is definitively NOT a singer, but Costello is!

  • The Everly Brothers sang this song the best.

  • emmy floors me everytime.

  • Recorded by Roy Orbison as a B side on one of his early hits check it out.

  • Very nice, but Nazareth is the One.

  • Crossing THE Boundaries!! This is 1950s MICKEY & SYLVIA!

  • kultstatus...

  • No, the song was written by Felice Bryant (August 7, 1925 – April 22, 2003) and Boudleaux Bryant (February 13, 1920 – June 25, 1987)[1] were an American husband-and-wife country music and pop songwriting team best known for songs such as "Rocky Top," "Love Hurts" and numerous Everly Brothers hits, including "All I Have to Do Is Dream" and "Bye Bye Love".

  • written by the great Joni Mitchell

  • @vaughnsalem Some sort of fool you are... go look at Joni's songsheet listing.... this is NOT on there!!!

  • captain beefheart on the pedal steel??

  • good idea, but then again, not.

  • These guys are so good, they rival the Keith Richards - Norah Jones version.

  • ok i like both of them but, is it just me or does it seem like they never rehearsed this together before ever?

  • A cowboy hat does not make one "country".

  • emmylou is still number 1

  • oh hell. they hacked this one up!!

  • Emmylou, Elvis and the Imposters. Gram Parsons is smiling from above.

  • Elvis wants to be Gram soooo bad!

  • Not bad but Gram Parsons and Emmylou did it best.

  • @nickravo No way man got to be Nazareth

  • @witchhunter81 hell no....gram and emmy by a LONG shot

  • @Treadsoftly14 Gram and Emmy really good but coming from a rock upbringing still think Nazareth shade it

  • @Treadsoftly14 Emmylou's better looking than Dan McCafferty though

  • @Treadsoftly14 aye. by a country mile.

  • Saw this in san jose at the bridge school benefit last year. Beautiful performance.

  • she ain't that old

    only xx years

    thank you emmylou

  • a punk who grew up in a country and western house .... absolutely fabulous. THANKS

  • Damn, Emmylou has aged well!

  • I like it almost as much as Emmy with Gram Parsons.

  • Performed by these two makes the song go a notch up in my book! Thanks!

  • I love Elvis.

  • Seriously good.

  • Simply divine. I love them both individually, and the coming together on this song is a rare thing. Thanks for posting!! :)

  • there is also a cool version of this done by none other than Keith Richards and Norach Jones...

  • @speedwizard97 when I first heard this I thought to myself, they couldn't have paired a better voice with a worse one, but then I heard the Richards/Jones version and, well...

  • Roy Orbison sang it as well on one of his albums

  • Nice Duet. Thanks for posting it!!

  • Something very good comes from the letterman show

  • I don't think EC or ELH would sing ANYTHING they didn't think was worthwhile. Why not just enjoy the moment? Two great contemporary artists together. What's not to like?

  • Lovely.

    See you laters, haters.

  • Costello is a pathetic person. He doesn't even have an own name,he stole it from the King. Shame on you,Co$tello. I hate you. You look like a frog.

  • @draggonheart you know nothing.

  • Nazareth this best

  • oh excuse me lame sappy and sucky. Not every song by great people is good, that was my point.

  • @walkertongdee I thought it was a crap song when I heard it as a power ballad, but the Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris version, with its twining harmonies and shimmery sadness made it a classic for me.

  • Nazareth Hit!!!!

  • @cheezey1950 Yeah, no. Nazareth had a hit with it, sure, but Emmylou Harris recorded it before they did, with the great Gram Parsons. And the Everly Brothers recorded it in 1960. It was written by the amazing Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, who wrote a fair number of songs you probably know.

  • @Illyria608

Thanks for the info...I am not a country fan, so didn't know about EMH ,very nice indeed..

  • Thanks

  • Emmy and Elvis. Keeping it real in a world of crappy music!

  • Elvis I do and allways will hold you in high regard but why do you sing any song? Do you have a need to sing them all no matter how lame?

  • @walkertongdee - LAME? Did you say LAME? Do your homework! Roy Orbison, Nazareth, Everly Brothers.....

  • brilliant. Never liked the change in this song particularly - even though it's an all time favourite of mine, but they deal with it so well. Her voice is just a joy and Mr Costello truly delivers on this song here. Like Gram Parsons doing it to with Emmylou, but don't like the way the middle goes, like everything about the Everly's original. What a f3cking tune.

  • poop

  • the harmonies on top of that guitar... celestial... truly heavenly.

  • great sound

  • iiNTERESTING HER JBF'D HAIR! : )

  • they're buddies :]

  • I rarely dump on the stars but way too much reverb.

  • I like Elvis Costello and I like this song, but I'm not sure it benefits from such a slow tempo. I prefer Roy Orbison's recording, which is much less affected.

  • Elvis. my dear Elvis.... what were you thinking when you bought that jacket? And don't you have someone who cares about you enough to throw it out? Friends don't let friends where fringed jackets.

  • There are some songs that, no matter who sings them, are protected against the boisterous pretentions of buffoons. This is one such song, whether 'tis sung by Gary Glitter, Aunty Flo, the Choir Invisible, the Pussy Cat Dolls or whoever ..........

  • This is a true testament to how music is universal, crosses all boundaries, and ties all people united together by their shared experiences of human emotions. I love all of you wonderful artists that dare to cross the boundaries into different genres.

  • great version.love elvis jacket.

  • Elvis was New Wave!

  • Check out his "Almost blue" album, some Nashville produced country standards sung as only he could.

  • love this!!

  • yeah hell yeah

  • Elvis in that outfit just intensified my fantasy life! HAHAHA

  • Just a tad too much slapback and tremolo on this one, Elvis. Emmylou is pitch perfect, as always.

  • Maybe the person who made the comment about neither of them singing the lead is just confused...it's not in the same key as the original, recorded first by The Everly Bros., but EC is clearly carrying the lead.

  • Another magical music moment...brought to you by David Letterman...He sure can pick 'em...

  • Great Song by two wonderful Artists, but my favorite version is Emmylou Harris singing with Gram Parsons - touches your soul.

  • Emmylou Harris e Elvis Costello, são duas lendas vivas da música mundial. Emmylou Harris, é dona de uma das vozes mais lindas do planeta.

  • I don't think that I've ever heard a performance where neither singer is singing the melody. They're each singing a different harmony. I loved it.

  • I don't think that I've ever heard a performance where neither singer is singing the melody. They're each singing a different harmony. I loved it.

  • They're great individually, but I'll go ahead and say it. They don't go together.

  • Fans of this should check out the Gram Parsons/Emmylou live version of this song on youtube: absolutely spinetingling.

  • For the sheeple with absolutely no taste I suggest you go back to American Idol and ohhh and Ahhh over the pretty boys and girls. Elvis has a great heart and talent. Along with Dylan and Neil Young he is one of our greatest treasures. Emmy is a total jewel, always will be. I guess either you have taste or not....

  • I agree with allnightpancakes..."Secrets, Profane and Sugarcane" is a stellar work of art.

This song/video is very soothing to me, as I am being scorned by the love of my life right now. This is just the salve I needed. These two voices blend together beautifully.

  • 2 legends

  • love does hurt more than you know till you can move on . iam always hurt i can not be with the man i lost and the ones that wanted me and i didnt want them. i hope ed you always know ill love you. justaniceangel

  • Good cover of the Everly Brothers' classic.

  • Waldo, let's give credit where it is due. Although the Everly Brother's recorded it first, they did not write LOVE HURTS or sing it first. That honor belongs to the American song writing legends husband & wife team of Felice and Boudleaux Bryant.

  • Agreed, a song writing team that the Everly Brothers gave much of their success to.

  • Thank you for posting. This is really beautiful.

  • pull shett

  • Elvis has texture in his voice. Not an american Idol but someone who can put feeling in his voice.

  • by far the best version asholls

  • I love EC, but he wants to be a soul singer OR a country artist - and he's neither. She's clearly the better singer here. She was with Gram - saved his records, and they knew it. But he's the writer of the two, if only he'd stay with what he does well.

  • I don't want anybody to begin insulting me, but I too find Costello unmusical-- his singing here barely registers the melody; without Emmylou, he would, to coin a phrase, 'suck shit'. Re: jacket, this is the angry young punk who once said, "I want to bite the hand that feeds me," and now he's married to Ms. Muzak, the 'face of Chrysler Sebring', and he's doing ads for Visa. I suspect old Elvis really does think he looks cool....

  • Hmmm...I think that before you quit Elvis forever, you should here his 2009 album 'Secrets, Profane, and Sugarcane.' My favorite of the year.

  • elvis is a great writer and artist but what's with the halloween costume??!! it just don't rang true.. get your regular duds back on and channel gram some other way.... :)

  • Comment removed

  • Emmily must have hit the bottom to sing with this no-talent....you folks must be tone deaf.........

  • lol...you are a TOTAL musical illiterate and if you think EC has no talent then you are totally devoid of taste, experience and joy. Suck shit.

  • ...and if you like Emmylou Harris then at least have the respect to spell her name properly...it really isn't that difficult.

  • it is elvis costello's outfit that is outstanding.

  • I like their version of the song as well as the Jim Capaldi & Nazareth versions. with LOVE

  • edhewfhggkegfhjg!!!!!!!!!!

  • I must admit I like this version, I've got it by a few artists.

Elvis is very good, I changed my mind about him when I saw him on Roy Orbison's Black and Whit Night DVD.

As for Emmylou, well... Everything has been said just how great she is.

  • Two huge worlds coming together creating a new beauty. Thanks guys.

  • Jesus, too much tremelo in Elvis's guitar!

  • @Lehmann108 that's the first thing i noticed

  • Elvis is the greatest singer/songwriter to come out of the punk generation (MY generation)! He is a multi-talented guy! and to hear him with Emmylou is a great treat! Thanks!

  • @Waldenpunk I absolutely AGREE!!!

  • @Waldenpunk I completely agree. The only one who comes close it Joe Strummer.

  • This is a decent cover of the song. For a real treat check out the original recording of the song by the unparalleled Everly Brothers.

  • The Everlys were very cool, but send people to Gram Parsons and Emmy Lou Harris for the diamond version of Love Hurts.

  • We all have different opinions. To me, the Everly original version is the definitive version of this song, followed by Roy Orbison, then Nazareth, then Parsons/Harris. To each, his own.

  • I think that the two sound good together. Both have interesting and unique voices. The song is strong. The mix comes together for me.

  • loVE YOU eLVIS

  • ELVIS IS KING. Elvis has such broad talent and range of experience that he can play whatever kind of music he wants and do a good job. He even made me like George Jones.

    Elvis is King. Got it?

    Long Live the King.

  • Actually Elvis is an Amazing guitar player - I saw him live going solo his technical ability is as good as - I think most country artists would see what a diverse background he comes from musically - Listen to his new country album - amazing - takes the genre and add layers - Tradition is for those that think the world remains motionless -

  • Да ну нахуй "прекрасная версия" , у мине кошак лучше воет, кады голодный ))) Прошу без обид, это личное мнение ))))

  • mombasaflash what planet are you on.Emmy lou only picks the best to perform with and I doubt she would ever pick you so go and put a wet blanket on your head

  • How about you do us all a favor - and tell us all how your own lack of talent has also made you rich.

    wanker.

  • Love hurts--just ask Dave.

  • I never thought that I would say this, but I think that I like this version better than Gram and Emmylou's version.

I'm still not sure - but this is damned good.

  • Emmylou Harris .... Looove..---

  • great movie ;)

  • Die-hard Costello fan that I am, I'll take this over the Parsons and Harris cover.

  • I love his jacket!

  • I have the same ^^

  • Is it sacrilegious to say I like this version better than Emmylou and Gram's?

  • EmmyLou is HOT!

  • Isn't she georgous - still. Unfortunately Costello does not have the volume, depth and sheer attack of Gram.

  • On further listening, it isn't that Elvis Costello's voice isn't good but that it is drowned out by excessive electronically amplified garbage. This should be a simple, beautiful song - CUT THE COMMERCIAL ELECTRONIC CRAP.

  • There is a lot of feeling in this rendition. Two artists who are passionate about music as reflecting life.

  • I love this version, personally. It gives me chills, their voices tuned in together... beautiful!

  • As the man said, this is beautiful. Almost as good as Emmylou and Gram's version back in the day 5*

  • When did Elvis turn country and western?

  • Elvis is a natural heir to Gram Parsons who I think wrote this song...Grams music is so much more than country..it's cosmic as Rodney would say!

  • This song was written by Boudleau and Felice Bryant and first recorded by The Everly Brothers in 1960. The husband and wife songwriting team wrote many of the Everly Brothers hit songs.

  • Gram Parsons did a cover of this tune, and yeah, I like his music, and Elvis's, too, I just was wondering about the cowboy hat?!?

  • He always was country and western.

  • hi Fiat,

I checked your profile, so I know you have excellent taste in music, but if you look back at Costello's career you will see that he was not always Country and Western, and I was just wondering when he became so inclined. I find it odd that people would thumb down my sincere question?! Be good.

  • OK, my comment was a little too brief. Costello is connected to country via Gram Parsons influence. He's a big fan of Parsons. Parsons and Emmylou recorded a country version of "Love hurts" in the 70s. You can also find other covers of Parsons songs by Costello on a couple of Parsons tribute albums. Costello is also a big fan of Hank Williams. Obviously he didn't do country early in his career, but the "spirit" of his music was always a little country. Lots of heartbreak in his lyrics.

  • hi Fiat, Ya, I can see that point. There is a fair amount of country influence in his work, and tons of other influences as well. What I like about Costello is that his career has been so varied that it is impossible to pigeon-hole him in any one genre. He's done it a lot, and I bet he had a hell of a time doing it! regards -Oggy PS I really do like your taste in music, eg Joni Mitchell, Talking Heads, Husker Du, Norah Jones, Beatles etc.

  • Now this is really beautiful. Emmy is angelic.

  • This pairing is especially beautiful and poignant.

    What a rare moment.

  • brilliant!

  • Wow!!!

  • Love this version, wow. Love Everly Brothers, dearly love Nazareth's version as well. Emmylou and Gram's is the version I lean on in my duo set but Emmylou's version on Spyboy is great too.

  • Can you sing? Can you do better? If not, shut up!

  • the ONLY time i've ever enjoyed this song!

  • that's because Nazareth ruined this song for 99.5% of the population.

The version she does with Gram Parsons on Grievous Angel is a little better....

but only a little - this is pretty damned good.

  • Beautiful harmony. Great duo.

  • Maybe he's having some fun?

  • I would go "see" one - heck, I might even "listen" - though your perplexing use of quotes makes me wonder...

  • It was a bizarre comment. I've seen Elvis live at least ten times and hope to bring my kids in a few years when they can appreciate his genius.

  • W-O-W!!!!!This is just something else!!!

what a combination, who would have thought it????

  • i LOVE you tube... who would have thought.... what an amazing combo... e + a this is like a dream....

  • @hannibalsdisco

Yeah, just think...has Emmylou ever sang with ANYONE? LOL

  • @MrKevinTN

Check out Emmylou with Mark Knofler - pure magic!

  • Good duet. VFine song.

    the Muse, Emmylou is Great

  • the band startrs the night they drove old dixie down after he plays

  • Wow this is beautiful. And makes me cry..
