D. Ray was amazing... and Jesco White, his son, is quite talented. The documentaries, especially the oldest: Talking Feet: Solo Southern Dance, and the 1991 documentary, The Dancing Outlaw, focusing mostly on Jesco.
As for The Wild and Wonderful World of the Whites, it has some great moments, my favorite being when Jesco get's philosophical and states something to the effect of his life having been like watching a film of himself. To me, the most touching scene in the film.
Watched the Wonderful Whites again last night, I cant get enough... They are, As Malcom Mclaren said of Sid Vicious, "A fabulous disaster".. No disrespect ment.
Ive played this video a 100 times. I wanna do this but my wife thinks its dumb. Shes an ass !!!
I am ordering me up a pair of these dancin' shoes and she wont be able to hear the soaps on TV no more. D Ray has inspired me....Give em hell Jesco !!! Yeeeee Haaaaa
I sorta think Jesco actually became a bit better than his dad by around age 35 or so. But D. Ray took the dancing more serious, as the actual way he wanted to make a better living for his family. Jesco seems to have taken the dancing as a way to have fun & gain some time in the spotlight .... and I mean no insult by that, only that it doesn't seem to be as deeply important to Jesco. But saddly, the hard years of drugs & such have REALLY slowed Jesco down now & that shows in his dancing too.
“When I met D. Ray he was a dancer, playing music everywhere. But, I never did try to stop him from playing music and stuff, what he wanted to do in his life, cause he told me one day, he said "Birtie, I go out and dance, when I go out and dance, I’m a making money to bring back to the family" and he did, he would come back with a pocket book full of money." -Birtie May White
I love to watch D.Ray dance.. Its awesome... Does anyone have the rest of this documentary of D. Ray White? It use to be on Youtube but got deleted. It was such a good group of vids.
I watched the documentry and the best I can recall one of his sons got into a fight with someone and the person followed him home shooting and D. Ray got into the line of fire.
I have slept since then so I don't remember what the fight was all about or the exact events etc.
I've got this on video called Talkin' Feet. One of the BEST old-time dancers I've seen. I love watching folks mtn. dance. hope to see more dancers post.
