I think personally as musicians everyone in dream theater is in the top 3 best for each instrument (to me they're #1 but to quiet down the trolls I said top 3) either way they all excel... This might sound stupid but go watch some hentai called love is the key to (something I can't remember) and just listen to the beginning music
I agree, that for his genre, John Myung is one of the best bassists around. Been to several DT shows and I always get the impression he is an even better bassist when he's doubling the lines that Petrucci, not only plays, but also writes? ...
If only I knew half of the knowledge about music theory I would be a so much more complete musician... That's one of the things I love I like the most about JM. The discipline he has, his unique technique and that solid theoretical knowledges:)
@andrewbautista23 He is doing descending fifths because tonal harmony is based on the relation dominant - tonic. The dominant is constructed on the perfect fifth above a chord, that's why, harmonically, the resolution of a dominant chord to his tonic is considered as a cycle of descending fifth, even if pratically it can be equally a descending fifth or an ascending fourth. This cycle of fifth can be applied in a tonality (diatonic) or not (chromatic) and with a large variety of chord types.
Okay I'm a learner now and I am a bit confused by the part when he plays arpeggios. He says he's applying the patterns he's showing the patterns in the key of C. So why does he also play notes that are not in the C (e.g. in example one when he doesn't start the second round on B but rather on B-flat and then on to A-flat in the next round instead of A etc.). I mean I know it must be right, I would just like to get an explanation for why he does that, because I want to learn. Thanks!
@TheKlepe He says each pattern starts in the key of C, doesn't mean it's going to stay in the same key of C. The chords/arpeggios changes a few times, Major 7, Min 7, Dom7, Dim7 as he states. So clearly the notes will change as for example, major7 has different notes to a Min7. Hope that helps.
Thx for the reply - however, it doesn't really explain it, unless I'm missing something. If I understand correctly, the second phrase in the third example should be a Bdim7, meaning he would have to play a diminished 3rd, a normal 4th, and diminished 5th, 6th and 7th, starting from the root of B. However, he starts the phrase from the root of B-flat, then just plays a normal major chord arpeggio from there.
and the reason for that cannot be just "adapting" the root, because if you see that arpeggio, had he started it from the root of B, it would be transposed as diminished 3rd, 4th (!) and 5th, a regular 6th(!) and a diminished 7th. Again, I am not trying to criticise or complain about anyone or anything, I just hope to understand and learn.
You know what's nice? Most other bass videos on here include lengthy, pointless debates in the comment threads, like pick playing vs. finger playing. But here, it's just Myung being amazing, humbling us all and making us realize none of it matters -- it's all about the music and how you want it to sound. He really is the greatest bassist alive today, and one of the greatest musicians period.
I know it's not about the music, but I was just stunned at the beginning, in the short segment where the light behind Jonh creates shadows with the strings on the bass.
@TheThrashNerd Absolutely. I really hope that with the new band's line-up his parts will stand out more. Just compare the latest albums with the first few ones, I really miss that!
@jollino This video was released in 1996. I was 6 years old at the time and don't know exactly how popular Dream Theater was around the world at that time, but I'd be willing to guess that they weren't nearly as popular as they are today.
@ckyisyourfuture They had hit pretty big by then, that was just after Change of Season's and they came and went like any bad but they have had a prett strong following, the only reason people think tht is because they are on roadrunner now and there is more promotion then before, I guess that is good in the way they sell a few more album's but they already had that base, i think they kind of liked being there own thing anyway and they did not make a video for 5 album's.Did not need to.
@migueliax it's all in good spirits... John created this mysterious thing about himself of never speaking, being the meditative soul of DT... I'm sure he laughs his ass off when he sees people saying "he speaks!"
@AmonImotekkh201190 yes yu are, he has the tuning of a 8 string guitar, the 5th one (the lower he has, is tuned B, and on an regular 6 dtring guitar, it would be an E

I also recall seeing him in a video from the early 90's when the guy's were fooling around, and Myung speaked and he sounded a lot less calm. He used to be a very wild guy. I guess he finally realized that he was the god of bass.
