  • this is probably one of the most straightforward instructional videos on bass ever

  • watching his left hand on the floor is quite entertaining while blazed..

  • Comment removed

  • Sounds so much like a chapman stick! Very cool

  • I think personally as musicians everyone in dream theater is in the top 3 best for each instrument (to me they're #1 but to quiet down the trolls I said top 3) either way they all excel... This might sound stupid but go watch some hentai called love is the key to (something I can't remember) and just listen to the beginning music

Tell me this doesn't sound like it....

  • does anybody else want his bass? haha

  • I agree, that for his genre, John Myung is one of the best bassists around. Been to several DT shows and I always get the impression he is an even better bassist when he's doubling the lines that Petrucci, not only plays, but also writes? ...

  • that beginning bass thing is thing is the most mind-bending thing i've heard

  • First you witness true art, and then the hard work behind it. I learned much from this

  • the professor

  • john petrucci vs john myung. John wins.

  • I always come here just to hear/see him showing the tunings. It hypnotized me, I love it .-.

  • His voice makes me wanna make babies! ♥

  • What's the name of the song at the intro?

  • I love his hair. And his voice is just... relaxing... :>

  • i know it sounds odd but when i sit in the myung position when playing bass i can generally improvise with much more creativity and intersting licks.

  • If only I knew half of the knowledge about music theory I would be a so much more complete musician... That's one of the things I love I like the most about JM. The discipline he has, his unique technique and that solid theoretical knowledges:)

  • I bet when this little asian dude shakes your hand he immediately apologizes and tells you to go put ice on it before it swells.

  • his voice is very relaxing

  • why is he doing descending cycle of fifths. he might as well just call it an ascending cycle of fourths.

  • @andrewbautista23 He is doing descending fifths because tonal harmony is based on the relation dominant - tonic. The dominant is constructed on the perfect fifth above a chord, that's why, harmonically, the resolution of a dominant chord to his tonic is considered as a cycle of descending fifth, even if pratically it can be equally a descending fifth or an ascending fourth. This cycle of fifth can be applied in a tonality (diatonic) or not (chromatic) and with a large variety of chord types.

  • We can have ALL of John Myungs Progressive instrcution video, but we Cant Have All Mike Portnoys?WTF?!?!?!?!!

  • Okay I'm a learner now and I am a bit confused by the part when he plays arpeggios. He says he's applying the patterns he's showing the patterns in the key of C. So why does he also play notes that are not in the C (e.g. in example one when he doesn't start the second round on B but rather on B-flat and then on to A-flat in the next round instead of A etc.). I mean I know it must be right, I would just like to get an explanation for why he does that, because I want to learn. Thanks!

  • @TheKlepe He says each pattern starts in the key of C, doesn't mean it's going to stay in the same key of C. The chords/arpeggios changes a few times, Major 7, Min 7, Dom7, Dim7 as he states. So clearly the notes will change as for example, major7 has different notes to a Min7. Hope that helps.

  • @BCarterGuitar ****doesn't mean it's going to stay in the same key of the C chord he began with****

  • @BCarterGuitar

Thx for the reply - however, it doesn't really explain it, unless I'm missing something. If I understand correctly, the second phrase in the third example should be a Bdim7, meaning he would have to play a diminished 3rd, a normal 4th, and diminished 5th, 6th and 7th, starting from the root of B. However, he starts the phrase from the root of B-flat, then just plays a normal major chord arpeggio from there.

  • @TheKlepe

and the reason for that cannot be just "adapting" the root, because if you see that arpeggio, had he started it from the root of B, it would be transposed as diminished 3rd, 4th (!) and 5th, a regular 6th(!) and a diminished 7th. Again, I am not trying to criticise or complain about anyone or anything, I just hope to understand and learn.

  • This is the kinda stuff that makes anyone want to own a 6 string bass guitar.

  • You know what's nice? Most other bass videos on here include lengthy, pointless debates in the comment threads, like pick playing vs. finger playing. But here, it's just Myung being amazing, humbling us all and making us realize none of it matters -- it's all about the music and how you want it to sound. He really is the greatest bassist alive today, and one of the greatest musicians period.

  • As soon as he played that low B at 2.06 I cant help but hear A Change Of Seasons :)

  • @TheKoodoos I heard lifting shadows of a dream there. Both are perfect songs.

  • @TheKoodoos Haha, when he does that I was expecting Lifting Shadows off a Dream

  • I know it's not about the music, but I was just stunned at the beginning, in the short segment where the light behind Jonh creates shadows with the strings on the bass.

  • @Mindlabytinth His playing brings our artistic side out, thats for sure. I wish he would bring out a solo album.

That bass of his is a real gem too. Lovely tone.

  • "... and for those of you who want to play along with me..."

    Play along? WITH you?! :'3

... and that's about as close as I'm ever going to get to touring with Dream Theater.

  • HE CAN SPEEEEEEEEEEEAK!!! i was searching it for years, and now, i've find it!!!

    PS: not a bad voice

  • John Myung, probably the coolest guy on earth.

  • does anyone know how people with smallish sized hand handle a 6 string bass?

  • @trogdor125 very carefully

  • i think that myungs skills are under used in DT :( or at least they could pump up the bass, as in budokan

  • 2:01 he said G-string. hehe

  • how do you get that sound out of a bass? what kind of eq settings or effects u need to sound like he does at the begining?

  • @Wayavas1337 high mid-tones and treble, low bass end :)

  • "I play basse in a band called Dream Theater"

Yeah, I bet no one even knows who those guys are...

  • @Shallafy Sooo... U dont know what is Dream Theater.... Wow simply wow

  • @audioflush

    That was irony ...

  • @Shallafy =^D

  • just to give you an extension above the g-string

  • God, he can play less than 1000 notes per second!

  • Anybody got the tabs to this video? Makes me want to switch from four to six.

  • why Myung don't have a solo performance on every DT's tour?

  • @6digit I think that all DT members should have a solo performance on every tour.

  • @marius994

except for Myung but the others they do that on their every tour!

  • @6digit Then means that I have to start watching more DT tours, lol. I'm still a bit new with them, I only saw Scenes From NY, which was wonderful.

  • This is a robot.Look his face,voice and........breathing!

    ROBOT hahahahahahahha

  • I love how he says "...for a band called Dream Theater" as if DT were a teenage garage band :D

  • @jollino He's just so... humble about it.

  • @jollino Yeah he refers to anything he was a part of as "a band/song called (whatever it is)" like people don't know him. Man he is the best!

  • @TheThrashNerd Absolutely. I really hope that with the new band's line-up his parts will stand out more. Just compare the latest albums with the first few ones, I really miss that!

  • @jollino Yeah I completely agree. If they can make full utility of all their members, they will no doubt be able to stun us once again =)

  • @jollino This video was released in 1996. I was 6 years old at the time and don't know exactly how popular Dream Theater was around the world at that time, but I'd be willing to guess that they weren't nearly as popular as they are today.

  • @ckyisyourfuture They had hit pretty big by then, that was just after Change of Season's and they came and went like any bad but they have had a prett strong following, the only reason people think tht is because they are on roadrunner now and there is more promotion then before, I guess that is good in the way they sell a few more album's but they already had that base, i think they kind of liked being there own thing anyway and they did not make a video for 5 album's.Did not need to.

  • @jollino you idiot wake up this video was made before you were born

  • 3 people couldn't believe myung talks, and trolled off

  • where can i find the sheets?

  • stop saying ''he speaks'', that's dumb. Just listen to the lesson

  • @migueliax it's all in good spirits... John created this mysterious thing about himself of never speaking, being the meditative soul of DT... I'm sure he laughs his ass off when he sees people saying "he speaks!"

  • @migueliax hah right, its kind of disrespectful too.

  • I love humble people. They always blow up in your face when you see them do this.

  • didnt know he knew how to speak

  • did know he knew how to speak

  • Myung officially gets my vote for the sexiest man alive.

  • his voice and bass are so nice :D

i think im gona go to bed listening to this!

    nighty night!

  • sh1t, he's speaking...

    :D

  • for the patterns and the music he shows.. ron jeremy should have been hired!!

for the video i mean hahha

  • I wonder if there is a band other than Dream Theater that all members (except vocal) have their own teaching video?

  • @RonniArbitiaas many.. one of them is meshuggah..

  • what kins of effect does he use in this video? a chruos? xD

  • He is like a Mix between Silent Bob and Ferb

  • @xuten roflmao

  • I can't even play bass, and I can't stop watching this. It's so cool.

  • i shat my pants with excitement watching this.

  • what a beautiful tone

  • @Thescientificproof That only one dislike is from the idiotic down-syndrome dickhead. FUCK YOU TOO

  • @DiabloDelSol2009 Fuck you fag

  • Interesting... Myung tunes his bass almost like a classic guitar... Am i wrong?

  • @AmonImotekkh201190 yes yu are, he has the tuning of a 8 string guitar, the 5th one (the lower he has, is tuned B, and on an regular 6 dtring guitar, it would be an E

  • @MetalHeadunit Ok, Thx for the data.

  • @AmonImotekkh201190 nope, the classic guitar tune is

EADGBE while 6 strings BASS tuning is

BEADGC hope you get it :)

  • @AmonImotekkh201190 yes ur wrong haha

  • the dislike bar is the size of justin beibers penis. lets keep it how it is!

  • this comment will randomly get thumbs up

  • Bum, bum, bum, bum and changing patterns. I want to sleep.

  • my 3 inspirations:

    -Steve Harris

    -John Myung

    -Ian Hill

  • I always thought he was a robot!!!

  • 0 likes. awesome!

  • @earljester i strongly reccomend u somehow remove this comment..

  • @CirnoIceFairy It's cool. 130 likes. ZERO dislikes. AWESOME ! Atm anyway. October 12, 2010 12:24 pm Pacific time.

  • @earljester you should say 0 dislikes

  • there are many myung fans in japan too.

his character may be loved all over the world. : )

  • What i want to see is some bona fide slap from myung, then i'll trully bow down!

  • I love you john

  • He's very humble sounding for a guy with so much skill.

  • @pinkfloydfan417 although i heard he doesn't care too much about DT fans, is it true?

  • @Blade15 I don't know. I wouldn't assume it is. Everyone in DT seems to be very thankful for their fans to me.

  • in the chord tones lesson he should have included half-diminished in addition to diminished

  • I'm a prog guitarist, and I want my bassist to have a 6 string bass, because thanks to Myung, I know it kicks out a lot of the barriers bassists have.

I also recall seeing him in a video from the early 90's when the guy's were fooling around, and Myung speaked and he sounded a lot less calm. He used to be a very wild guy. I guess he finally realized that he was the god of bass.

  • HE TALKS!!D:

  • his last name's pronounced mi-ung? i always pronounced meung

  • @REDMAX777

    i pronounce it mjung ^^

  • @REDMAX777 My-young :)

  • Dude, I want that bass!!!!

  • I've seen quite a few videos where John Myung speaks why does it surprise everyone so much.

  • Ya know, there's something about music instructional videos in the 90's that are so... hypnotizingly soothing...

  • When he plays it looks so simple but, IT ISN'T!! He is a god!!

  • He doesn't need to talk much. His playing does the most

  • the first 7 pattern he play sounds like a slow porn song! haha MYUNG IS THE MAN!!!! I almost got the metropolis solo down crazy timing!

  • This guy is so awesome, and he knows. He doesn't have to show it at all. damn badass

  • now i know why he doesnt talk, his voice is so calming he'd send his audience to sleep haha

  • Awesome stuff! (Y)

  • oh yeah! been looking for this instructional video for some time! :D

    Thx for uploading :D

    !PROG & ROLL!

  • Who would've thought that something as simple as that can be THAT soothing...truly Myung playing the bass!

  • It was so annoying not being able to hear almost any bass on the last album.

Seriously, more bass solos and more bass presence in the songs- they're not a simple punk band, they've got one hell of a bassist, and we want to hear him!

I'm a guitarist by the way. wish I knew bass is some awesome when I decided to learn guitar =(

  • @NeverLandQM You know, you could just switch to bass if you prefer bass xP

  • @Lucidmakexael24695 I know, and I'll probably will learn to play bass after I'll finish school~ I do love guitar though, don't get me wrong xD

right now I have no time to learn 2 instruments xD

  • @NeverLandQM I know!! I listened to it through as many different sources as I could, even bose headphones, and I could still barely hear the bass. I think Six Degrees has the best mix for hearing the bass, Myung really cut through on that one.

  • @bradleyrock4602 Either that or Train of Thought. Personally I think that was the album that he sounded the best on.

  • @RDog4484 Oh God, the bass break on Stream of Consciousness kills me every time I hear it... It's so simple, but so sleek and powerful...

  • Yoda of bass!

  • OMG HE CAN TALK!!!!!!

  • cmon, Make a solo Album!

  • I got a 6 string because of this man

  • ditto . = D

  • same

  • Man to think of it that this GOD made me play bass in the first place! I'm honored to even try to play like him.

  • He's overdue for an other video! :)

  • he needs a solo album of course

  • great bassist!

  • I've heard him !!!! Yes I did it :D:D

  • That's great, I didn't even know the last string was C...

I thought it was B, like on the guitar.

    C makes it a LOT easier. :)

  • C makes it more usable :)

  • Heheh, that's why I was wondered and very much pleasantly surprised... :)

  • so where's his solo albums??????

  • OMG, he talks!!!!

  • @31rS3RP3N7 Of course he does, he speaks with his bass!!!!

  • what effects is he using?

  • skills...

  • probably his internal awesomeness pedal

  • John talked more in this 9 minute clip than in his whole life. CRAZY!

  • WTF myung speaks?

    xD

  • @caralhotephoda just as suprised

  • such a fucking awesome video.

  • look at those frickin forearms!

  • who knows what headphones he uses ?

seems like very wide diaphragms, more than 50mm !!

  • Can anyone enlighten me as to why this whole video has not been uploaded once since the last year ive been searching for it?

  • I must make notes...

  • I would buy it if it was on dvd but it's not. Thanks

  • Thanks!

  • Thank you so much every where i looked i could only find this on VHS but i didnt have a player uou are my new hero
