I like how at 1:00 Matthieu's voice can be ominously heard a second time. I noticed that it was absent in the mastered version but I thought it was an ingenious use of atmosphere to the song among other things. Or maybe the intro was playing tricks on my mind and I just thought I could hear his voice...
I am so damn impressed by this. Not normally something I'd listen to, not because of the screaming but the low riffery. Very beautiful though, and catchable rhythms.
This band completely pulled it together, I mean I liked their previous album but it didn't have enough direction for my taste. Februus seems to actually take you somewhere. My favorite song is definetly "Hail".
I like the instruments but I just can't get into this type of screamed vocals. To me heavy metal vocals have to either be clean (from operatic to whispers) or very deep growls (a la Saturnus or Opeth), maybe even BM shrieks... but screams are a complete turn off for me.
This together with Ever Forthright's release will be remembered as the albums that took the djent genre and did it right. (Februus is more of an ambient djent band like TesseracT though, while Ever Forthright reminds me more of Meshuggah or Periphery).
Bands from now on will have a hard time comparing to those two!
Haha yeah, the emphasis on a lot of the syllables have been changed around to fit the rhythm more. Plus his accent and the recording makes "the" sound like "tsah", and "ersatz" sound like "errahd".
@andydoonanbass Yeah, still waiting on mine too... at least I got a free (and legal) official download straight from Basick. Send an email to them (info@basickrecords . com) if you want to. Doesn't have the 3 tracks from the 2nd CD though : \
@StepSoftlyGhost Being a continuous concept album I'm sure they had an idea how they were going to do it. When they first posted this video they said it was the middle of the first half of the album or something like that. They also have a band website and it had the lyrics to Hail posted around the same time of this video I think.
Holy crap if you guys haven't herd all of Februus yet, DO IT!
In a year so full of disappointments i was overjoyed to hear this album come out so flawlessly. Best of 2011 for sure and probably best one of the best of all time. Not even kidding.
To be honest, I like this version of frost a little better than the new one. Not that the new one is very different, this just sounds a tiny bit more atmospheric. Either way it's an INCREDIBLE song. Plus the full version of "Hail" is wonderful
@MrNicetomeetya i thought the same thing the first time i heard the new version. i thought this one was more atmospheric and emotional almost. but after listening to the new one repeatedly and coming back to this one, while the differences are still there, i feel like one's not better than the other anymore. dunno
@luke666808 Out of the three bands you mentioned, I have only heard sagas by equilibrium. And I have to say, it's a godlike record, the symphonies really adapt the black metal. However, I have to say I like Uneven Structure's potential sound better because like davwuh I love jazz-fusion or ambient-fusion metal. I have recently discovered the post-metal genre which includes phenominal albums such as Cult of Luna's Salvation and Isis's Panopticon. I highly recommend those
@DissYraiN For some reason on most metal videos you won't notice a huge difference. For what I can tell in drum'n'bass vids and the like, is where this feature really shines.
@davwuh you're just too hard to please, I like Uneven Structure but I've heard a lot of good stuff over the years, did you listen to "After" by Ihsahn or "Bilateral" by Leprous or "Sagas" by Equilibrium?, all of which I rank higher than UES.
@luke666808g Aye i won't deny I'm too hard to please. I'm more into jazz and fusion than metal, but metal is the only genre doing anything decent these days I'd say (especially these djent bands). I'll check out your reccomendations though, cheers
@davwuh taken a listen to tesseract or (importantly) vildhjarta? On a less djenty note.. between the buried and me's album The Great Misdirect and their new EP are almost godlike in my opinion ^^.. and duuude if you can find a copy of Alan Holdsworth's Blues For Tony from 2009 go for it! @arieksundah, I heard the TesseracT riff you were talking about (and I don't listen to CK so I don't know what they sound like). Yeah, there's definite influence but like you said, there's a line between influenced and copying.
@mdross9500 I don't consider their being a djent scene, mainly because it's a young genre and it's still very underground. The only band that many people have heard of is Meshuggah. TesseracT and Textures are close behind. Veil of Maya and BoO seem too deathcore to be considered Djent and I'm on the fence about The Contortionist. Even so, this is kind of a new step for Ambient djent, and it could set a trend.
@arieksundah Considering it stays at just us, and no one is too aggressive, we can have a peaceful debate.
I would say Uneven Structure is unique in some areas. I don't think even TesseracT has as much atmosphere and ambience as this band. The style of clean vocals is also fairly original and rare. I would have to say the screams are fairly similar to most bands but under no circumstances bad. At around 6 minutes (where "hail" begins) there's a typical djent breakdown. So it's mostly unique.
@MrNicetomeetya It all comes down to what two people consider to be enough to be original. The leads sound very similar to Cloudkicker's in 2:39 for example and a Tesseract-esque lead then comes in on another track with the echo effect. Then the riff afterwards sounds very reminiscent of a Tesseract build up.
@arieksundah Considering it stays at just us, and no one is too aggressive, we can have a peaceful debate.
