  • They should use this loco as a DVT top and tail with a live Deltic!

  • When i used to design medium speed diesel engines, they had a model of one of these in the reception area, and a bust of Robert Stephenson. I think they made some Deltic locomotives in the place too. "Vulcan Works" in Newton-le-Willows. Of course its been demolished and forgotten. That's how good Deltic's were.

  • if only his majesty was live :/

  • And why was she put back into service?

triumph6able: Actually, trains are always referred to as female even Flying Scotsman.

  • that deltic dp1 failed on the way to leeds going past coply hill it overrevved its engines but glad to see its been repaired

  • I remember watching this superb loco at Doncaster before it entered service, it was a WOW with all the spotters.

  • would be nice to see it run

  • Sorry guys but DELTIC has always been known as the King of diesels,so please stop calling him "her" and "she",let's have a bit bit of respect here,we are not worthy.

  • @triumph6able - No, I think you will find it was the Queen of Diesels, everyone knows that. Give me the name of a king that was beautiful.

  • @philquine I think you maybe right,I hugged DELTIC's buffer in York museum in front of my wife, I'd better start calling him "her" for my own cred !! Thanx for the education mate !!

  • @philquine Henry V.

  • @philquine If it was truly female, it would whine and break down regularly

  • Granted yes it would be nice to see and hear the prototype back in action and it may one day happen but i do have my doubts

  • Hate that livery!!!!

  • That aint a train its a MONSTER!

  • @666fannyfart No, that diesel train is more like a Tyrannosaurus Rex or Velociraptor than a monster.

  • It COULD in theory be restored- just a question of money and inclination I suppose,

these engines were also used in marine applications, at least one other deltic survivor has benefitted from this

  • Spoilsport!! you could have left me believe in a miracle hearing this beast fire up once more lol , just messing. Do you think she we ever run under her own power again ?

  • Great Video, 5 Stars!

  • Great video, even if the sound is coming from her younger sister! We've had Alcidon down here at the NVR until recently - what a great thing to see.

  • it is impossible for any sounds to come from this locomotive as the pistons and crankshafts were removed by english electric in 1963 when it was presented to the science museum in kensington,if you want to hear what it realy sounds like see the shot of the protype deltic in my deleted dvd the deltic locomotives of british railways

  • The Ultimate Deltics 1, 2 & 3!!! Hello! :-) Actually the video was not dubbed, but is the sound from Alycidon, which is propelling the loco. It has fooled quite a few people even though I mention this in the information. Cheers!

  • As a kids we would buy a platform ticket at Kings cross and go to Luton i think.we waited there for the Deltic which by then would be shifting, the sound gives me a shiver even today.funny thing was a few years ago we nearly bought a motor torpedo boat with twin napiers.we decided not to when we discovered the fuel used at 50 knts weighing 70 tons, shame though.cw.

  • I worked on the Deltic and remember collecting some disused casings to make up dummy engines for the prototype Deltic befor it went to the Science museum

  • I remember seeing her in the Science Museum in London back in the 1980's when I was a (train mad) kid!!

  • its being pushed!

  • And it even says that in the video description! WOW!

  • well done!, read the description

  • What I really like about this engine are the rather large windows. I could only imagine what it would be like to ride in the cab. Probably like a souped up glass house on wheels. Very cool!!!

  • Not under its own power.

  • technically both

  • 777worldliner, it has two 18-cylinder, 1650 horsepower diesel engines engines which drive electric generators. So as the other commentator said: technically, both. I know this because I'm a nerd. HTH

  • I was fortunate to see this prototype on the ECML at Newark on test runs back in the1959/60

  • I would have loved to have seen her during her working life, but I more than happy to have seen and enjoyed her offspring. Cheers! :-)

  • shes been given permission to be restored to main line duties thankfully again . =]

  • Really? I know No. 2 has.

  • if anything id like to see 016 be donated to dps because its in a mess at the minutes its just rusting away

  • is it still running?

  • If only. No, the sound is coming from Alycidon. Cheers!

  • great to see it running again

  • its not

  • Is this prototype loco really so knackered that they can't get it running again?

    Surely it's not THAT bad.

  • I think its more that the NRM aren't really interested in diesels.

  • its not mainline certified and doesnt have safety equipment in the cab and the NRM dont want to waste money fitting it when they have all on with scotsman

  • it also wouldnt be allowed on mainline without Yellow front

  • @NSMerryweather4771 Killjoys. Or perhaps it might get special licence, since steam trains travel on the Main Line without a yellow front.

  • does anybody know if the NRM has any plans to get DP1 up and running again?

  • this engine is in shildon now

  • I remember these good ol' "claggers" running through the UK, the good days. :)

  • I hope you are aware that they have been back on the mainline for over ten years now? Though unfortunately not this one yet!

  • I remember the first time I saw Deltic,it was at Northwick Park near Harrow, It was at the head of a west coast express coming up the 15mile incline from Euston, these trains were usually headed by a Princess Royal or Coronation class - and were the the pride of the original L.M.S. belching out smoke with 14 coaches at about 50 m.p.h. but the Deltics were travelling at least 20 m.p.h. faster, must have been about 1956, wonderful memories. I could see it was the start of the end for steam.

  • lol teh little circle window on the cab

  • Thanks very much for this piece of footage, I've been searching for live footage of this very loco and found it..I remember it well..thanks very muchy

  • i have lots of film from 1955 showing this loco its not that rare you know

  • as a kid i would wait near dringhouses sidings and wait for these beasts to pass ,full throttle out of york heading south ,first the twanging rails ,a rumble followed by a roar ,then deafening body shaking vibrations as she passed ,happy days

  • dp2 was that the 23rd deltic looked like a mix of 55 and the eariler baby deltics ,came to greif up near thirsk if im not mistaken.

  • It actually looked exactly like a Deltic to all intents and purposes (the grilles were in slightly different places)- the main reason it looked like a Baby Deltic was the fact that it didn't have that nice lime green stripe down the bottom. Yup, Thirsk 1967. A sad day.

  • It's a shame BR never commissioned the Super Deltic. A 4,400 bhp Co-Co "Super Deltic" was proposed but not built. [4] This would have been designated Class 51 and would have had two 18-cylinder turbocharged engines, based on the 9-cylinder turbocharged engine used in the Baby Deltic. The Class 55's engines were not turbocharged, although they did have scavenging blowers. Now that would have pissed off those living near the line who don't like two tone horns!!!

  • i live in york and i have to say i miss the beast since it moved to shildon ,as far as i was aware the power units are unserviceable ,the sectioned engine has a stamped plate i was looking at it yesterday cannot remember exactly but i think it was numbered 308 or 307

  • Did it have a engine explosion, and the original power units are not the same as those used in the production Deltics?

Were there clearance problems with the width of the body?

If so both issues would be powerful reasons to leave it alone.

  • why doesn't it work?

  • Because DELTIC doesnt have any power units

  • how come?

  • Because 1 of them is a cross section displayed alongside the prototype in the museum and the other one just isnt there

  • oh, well some wealthy buisness man with a eye for money making potential should get it running with some sets and railtour till he gets rich, rich.... RICHHHHHHH!

  • oooooooooooooo kay

  • why??

  • theres allready several deltics no one is going to buy new engines. There not like hornby they cost thousands

  • What about the fact that DELTIC is irreplaceable? Remember the unique DP2? It could happen to DELTIC. Some things are just too valuable.

  • I don't think that's quite true. The sectioned power unit at the NRM is not out of DELTIC. I think actually that both power units are in the loco, but they lack pistons and quite a few other essential bits!

  • This is very cleverly shot!

  • if only!

  • yer lol nice cam trickery but we all know it was pushed in lol kool if only.

  • Cool locomotive.

  • If only..............

  • Hee hee- almost had me fooled into thinking the spare engines were put in.

The width issue was to do with the footplates which were most likely modified. I think it also happened with the production deltics.

If you get enough ka-ching apparrently Rustons will build you new detlic 18 engines.

  • It is slightly wider than some locos, it damaged york platform once, this may be a problem

  • Whats the operational status of DP1 then, would it work if they tried? after all it was overhauled prior to NRM, and we all own it, bring it back to life I say!!

  • Oh! How I wish they would bring it back to life! Can you imagine travelling Liverpool-Euston behind that beast! And to think there are people out there who have done just that, without even being aware of it! I'm not sure if they could get the original engines running without spending lots on new components. Cheers, Phil Q
