This setting of the Ave Maria, as presented here, is actually more moving than Schubert's original (poor guy; he never imagined how his piece could be enhanced into something that just captures the soul. And in this very lush setting, the D Flat Major key in this presentation just works perfectly, causing one to forget the original completely, And that is certainly not at all regrettable.

His voice was at its peak when the Maestro sang this. No tenor in the world could even come close..., not then, nor for many, many years thereafter. Even later in life, Pavarotti remained my favorite. Only when death silenced him did I look around for another to replace Pavarotti's great voice and presence, but alas, no one was there. Now the Maestro sings only unto God. And the angels weep with the joy that once wetted our tears as we listened.

Maybe its because I'm younger (23), but I never thought Pavarotti was as great as everyone says because I've only heard him sing as an old man. After stumbling on his work from the 70s (especially La Fille du Regiment) and hearing him in his prime I now understand why he is the Maestro. Just fucking perfect. What a boss.

My Mom was an Opera fanatic. I grew up listening to Caruso, Domingo, Leontyne Price, Maria Callas. This version, of this song, is the only one that ever made her stop everything she was doing, and close her eyes, and cry. I am a 58 year old man, and it has the same impact on me.
