  • Thanks for the explanation Neil. Having experimented with many grips I find it amazing just how many there are.. Hendry says that since we are all physically slightly different you have to find a grip which works for you and stick with it [unless you can find an even better one ] I find a loose grip for most of the action and firmly bracing the other hand and arm [Joe Davis tip] helps a lot with the vital trick of keeping as still as possible when delivering the cue forward.

  • You are telling people not to copy anyone, yet at the same time you demonstrate a particular way of holding the cue. Evidently it's not a very reliable method since I notice your say you don't use it yourself. Something not too logical here. Surely we would find it more helpful to see a grip which you know works ie. the one you use yourself.

  • @rheiner86 its a fair point .....but if i was teaching somebody to play from scratch ......i would teach them this way of holding the cue ......i personally hold the cue in the back of my hand similar to the old billiard players ......the way i have shown in this clip keeps the grip simple and very effective ....i know this one works just as well as my own .....but a large majority of players will hold the cue this way.......great comment and thanks for taking the time to make it

  • @rheiner86 I think you don't quite understand what neil said. Everyone will have diff grip by which eye you use to aim, arm length and body length...etc. He's just telling us the most popular way for the grip. I have tried many diff grip and I am still finding my grip for the best of mine. Play snooker of what you feel like and never copy anyone. Otherwise, everyone will be Ronnie.

@Neil Thanks for sharing your knowledge to us. Very appreicated!!!

  • hi neil ur this clip helped me alote but i cant play consistently caz im not about the part u said ur wrist shouldnt be moving, does this mean not ever forward and backward of wrist movement...(in ur clip when u say open n close like door i got that part except should i be using my wrist to stroke or wat???? can u talk or text me more about wrist tnx alote neil..... caz when i changed my grip as u said i play really good but sometimes really bad caz im not sure of the wrist movement..tnx

  • thank you so much neil--> last night i played about 8 hours and i was so sad , caz something was wrong with my game , and when i saw your clip i got that i was taking off my last 3 fingers. but as i have changed my grip like as u said 5 fingers and last 3 fingers shouldnt be off the cue, i feel confident but i cant take long pots now,,,,,, when i go for along pot, it just hits the object to the right /left?

is it because i have recently changed my grip and it takes time to get used to it?

  • Hi Neil, I had some coaching last summer and with the grip I was told to always have the plam of the hand toching the cue before going down on the shot. I am finding that in doing this the hand is closed in the address position. Have I miss understood what has been said or is this because the cue action he advocates,IE droping the elbow on the follow through making up for this lack of forward hand movement.

  • Of all the online coaching tips I think that yours are the most thorough and helpful.

  • @rheiner86 thank you very much for commenting

  • Hi neil, Great videos.. Just wondering how important is it to open the grip hand when you pull the cue back?

I dont currently do this and am struggling with longish pots especially straightish ones. Just feels werid opening the grip.

Also im fairly good at potting long angled pots, (say half ball) but struggle with the straight ones. Any idea why this could be the case, seems weird how i can pot a cracking 1/2 ball pot then miss a long straightish one.

  • neil

there is a good player in sydney and i see him often play great

(before telling that , let me tell u that i dont mean to underestimate you , i m just telling this caz im confused)

    thanx neil

so he said , when u r playing a soft or closer shots , dont squeeze ur grip as u as u mentioned , and when u r playing a long pot or power shot, so sqeeze it!

so can u text me back with a good explanation tnx

  • @the147break you have a pm

  • thanks neil i did watch that video like 4 months ago but forgot about it

seeing it again realy help with that exercise .thanks

  • hi neil, i've got a question. sometimes, when i play a ball dead weight to roll the ball into the pocket(to hold cue ball position for next shot in most occasions), the object ball tends to drift/swirl away from it's intended path and often ends up hitting the jaws and missing the pot completely. Can you explain a bit regarding this phenomena and how to overcome it? thanks.

  • hey neil love ur videos although i hope u have somebody holding the camera

i wanted u to make a video about top spin. i usually miscue when i try to play

extreme top spin shot i think it might be because i get my grip hand too lined up with the ball or donknow . i was hoping u can help me?

    thank you

  • @gamerahs no i do all the clips by myself ......i know what you mean though.......sometimes i'm slightly out of shot .......hopefully i get the important bits in
