@bbodine61 Same reason Gandalf the Gray gets dropped into an abyss or shuffled off on some errand every chapter or so of Lord of the Rings -- if he were around, the "heroes" would never have anything to do because he'd take care of 90% of the bad guys by himself!
Remember, Auron came >< close to killing Hercules in Kingdom Hearts.
To my knowledge, he just likes to hold it the way he does. As you can see at 0:50, it seems to be alright and he only uses it to swing the sword, he always wields it using one hand only.
It was a sort of a tradition with the ronin of the feudal Japan (of which Auron is based in many aspects). Auron carries his arm in his jacket as a tribute to Braska, who was his master. Samurai who became ronins through the death of their master did that as a reminder that they failed once before...
