  • The parts where Don used the "brush" technique, you are supposed to strum while holding the palm of your hand lightly over the bridge, if you want to get that Reno sound for When You And I Were Young,Maggie.

  • Stop bashing the kid, He is awesome! I played just like that after 1 year, and I only have 6 months of 1/2 hour lessons once a week

  • And the last thing I have to say, is your tempo is a little bouncing. I find you speeding up and slowing down a back and forth a lot. Might just be you more familiar with some parts of the songs with other and breeze thru the easy parts but when you hit the less familiar parts, you slow down a bit to manage them.

Slowing down a tad would negate this and I think thats really the issue anyone has with the song.

All and all, very good after a year, but as with anything, always could use more. =)

  • Also, additional words of advice, those who think they know it all, never do, and find out they learn the most when they do.

Those they think they are the best, never push themselves as hard as those who don't, so natural talent and the best tutor won't get you as far as them.

Be comfortable with yourself, your young, so you take everything to heart. Take things at face value, and if someone mentions something, review your work, and you just might find some merit in it.

  • Sounds good but very choppy. Your finger is def clipping alot on one of the notes damping it. Playing fast doesn't make you sound good, playing right does, so have fun and play at a speed at which you perfect, the first one that is, the rest sound good..

  • good just man...dont let Skankhermit tell you other wise...he obviously hasnt seen the Whoa Mule by Raymond Fairchild because he hits the head of the banjo...and thats really good playing i might add also. keep up the work...music is how you like to play not how some skankhermit tells you how to

  • you suck!

  • Not bad playing for 1 year. I'm sure you've progressed since this was recorded, but based on what I see here, you'd benefit from time with a metronome at slower speeds.

  • Awesome work Acepeacemaker

    Great video. :)

    Much love Kat

  • not bad but after a year you should be alot smoother than that, learn to play in something else than a constant forward roll is my advice. banjo is so much more than what most people reduce it to. Also let me add that speed is what a banjo is built for, speed is the EASY part, sure it may impress ppl that have little to no real musical insight but to anyone that knows their shit can tell, LOL and a banjo is NOT a fucking drum, i LOL everytime i see ppl do that dumb shit.

  • Okay, let's see your video. Show me the RIGHT way to do it.

Also check the date, this was over two years ago.

  • youre a cocky motherfucker dude

  • Well with all do respect, that's how Raymond Fairchild recorded "Whoa Mule Whoa", so acepeacemaker is just playing it the right way hah. I DO agree it should've been worked out smoother before gettin' faster though. But kudos to him for doin' a descent job here.

  • @SkankHermit Damn dude, who made you fucking Banjo Bill?

  • @dicsballer9 Haha, I was wondering the same thing. In reply to him, I "LOL" everytime somebody has something smart like that to say with no videos...or any evidence that they could do any better, at all.......

  • WOW! I have been trying to learn banjo for just about

3 years and I ain't near as good as you are. But then

I'm 64 years old and my fingers just won't go as fast

as I want them to. Keep it up and in a few years I'll

    be buying your CD's.

  • AWESOME LOL

  • It sounds like you listen to Raymond Fairchild a little!! You can't go wrong there...keep it up, you're doing great!!

  • You are forgiven. I stand corrected regarding your love for the Blues. My entire point from the beginning was of honorable intent. You know more now than when you were younger, I'll bet. People become (hopefully) wiser as they age and it's been 43 years since I was 19. In the ensuing time, I have known, played with, and had among my dear friends, some incredibly able banjoists. I know what good one's sound like and I know what GREAT ones sound like. Andrew can be a great, not just good/fast one.

  • Sorry, that was to 2many5s.

  • blueslover777,

One of these days, when you grow up and your nuts drop, perhaps you will understand that a difference of opinion doesn't make someone you disagree with an idiot.

If this young hero wants to play as fast as possible, it is absolutely his option. Besides, we need banjo players of all types...just so we can tell the good ones from the sloppy ones.

At your age, what could you know of the blues (or much else for that matter) anyway?

  • I don't really understand where you can come off saying I don't know much about anything. I only called you an idiot because this young man is doing great at playing fast. However you're the type of person that "knows everything" and has to tell people what to do. In addition to that, you should not judge people's ability by their age. It's their experience that counts. I didn't say I knew a lot about blues, my username says I love them. God Bless. Forgive me for calling you an idiot.

  • hell yeah man. 1 year? i need to invest in a banjo ASAP.

  • love that Whoa Mule! makes me want to try my hand at bluegrass fingerpicking

  • play it the way that pleases your heart, fantastic!!

  • Slow down....You are speeding most of the time and getting a bit sloppy in your execution. The slower tempo numbers sound much better.

  • No, thanks.

You stick to the slow ones.

When I play, I have fun.

  • I have to say, at first I was going to say to slow down but FORGET IT!! That sounded GREAT!! I have been playing the left handed banjo for about a year myself. I want to ask you, where did you learn to play like that? Did you have a teacher (online or in person) or did you teach yourself? I would like to know if you don't mind me asking.

  • Thank you for not telling me to slow down, I hate it when people do that. I took lessons for a little more than a year, in person, from one of the best banjo guys around here. I also practice pretty much every day for a couple hours. It takes alot of commitment.

  • Thank You, I take lessons from a banjo teacher but I want to leave him because he is not teaching me bluegrass banjo and that is what I want to learn. I wanted to hear from people as to how good the online lessons are or the teach yourself method. Again thank you.

  • You're an idiot.

  • Yeeehaaaa!!!!!!!!

  • Nice Reno style of picking ya gots there.

  • Well done! Keep it up.

  • Very good playing for only 1 year!

  • Holy Mother! U're quite something eh! keep doing good!

  • that was wonderful

  • i m gonna get my self into the banjo again :D so that way i can play good gotta get better at it i like bluegrass

  • wonderful!

  • Do you know any good banjo tab sites?

    cheers

you're good by the way end of.

  • "Banjo Hangout" is where I go for tabs these days, just google that name.

  • What's too fast?

Bluegrass is dying because nobody has the guts to play fast anymore!

  • YES! It's hard to find people who can still tear it UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP!!!!!!

  • Great bajo playing...except...slow down. Theres no need to play thatt fast. i mean yo're good but you would enjoy the experience more if you concentrated on timing and technique rather than break neck speed. Keep it up!

  • timing and technique were great, especially just for one year, and banjo is all about going fast lol.

  • You must sleep with your banjo to get that good in a year

I have started today see you in a year i wish!

  • How many hours of daily practice did this skill level take and how many other and what other instruments do you play? Pretty awsome.

  • I practiced at least 2 hours a day while I was taking banjo lessons. When I was younger I took piano and guitar lessons but they didn't really stick. I have a washtub bass and a fiddle that I've tried to play around with and in middle school I taught myself trumpet for band class.

I'd like to learn Mandolin or Harmonica next.

  • Thats great for a years playing!

I recently started the ukulele which i love, but i also want to start the banjo. I hope im that good after one year, gonna sell a guitar to buy a banjo first though.

I think that some songs are best played a little slower though :)

  • Yes!!! I just started to learn how to play last week and this has given me some true information. Thank you thank you thank you! YOU FUCKIN ROCKK!!!!

  • Great job! You're on the right track!

  • Did you take banjo lessons or did you self teach yourself what would the first thing you would say a person should learn when beginning banjo

  • I took banjo lessons from a real pro. It goes so much faster if you take lessons because you can see first hand all the rolls and patterns you're supposed to be doing. The standard first song to learn is Cripple Creek because it's simple and if you learn the alternating thumb pattern first all the others seem easy. I recommend taking lessons though. There's no shame in it.

  • good pickin... only been playing a year?

  • slow it down. when it's too fast it can be not clean in some spots. but good playing.

  • WoW! I really enjoyed that! The Buchanan family ROCKs. Could use alittle organ in the backround though. Thank's Joe D.
