  • Hey man loved the review and subbed the reason the audio coming from the external mic is bad is because the mic or XLR to 3.5 adapter only has mono audio this means that the audio is only coming through one channel. This can be fixed in post by duplicating the channel with audio coming through. hope this helped. ;)

  • thx! very helpfull

  • Ummmm Ummm Ummm Ummm..

  • I found a way to make a cheap and easy shock mount with no tools! / watch?v=rnDmY-XxQFo

  • You have, like so many so called unprofessional reviewer on YouTube, no idea about the product nor about any professional idea about sound recorders or sound recording. Just the typical YouTube nonsense that does neither help anyone. It is just a waste of download data and time to watch it. Just take a lesson on sound recording at your next Technical College or University.

  • can i use this for things like skype?

  • Can I record 2 sources simultaneously from internal mic and external mic with this recorder? If its able to record simultaneously, can I adjust each gain of the input source? thanks

  • 1. Use it as a mic for recording audio for your videos (99% better than any onboard mics)

    2. Use it to record some song you really like on a concert.

    3. Plain conversation/speech recording

    4. Digital sound amplifier for your mp3 player. (i use it for that and found that it adds richness to sound, but that also depends on your mp3 player quality)

H1 is the way to go for that price range. Please like so other see this. I think it will be helpful.

  • is this good for recording sound effects, cloth sounds, walking everything random.

  • @vanhakaveri I will make a video just for you. But you need to tell me what sounds you want. What do you say? Then you will be able to judge by yourself.

  • @rudarookie Everything you need to do all kind of movies, like city ambient noise, cloth sounds(like moving a back bag.) Walking, running, debris sounds like sand falling/wood breaking. And speaking of course, just everything. Im making videos(not for this channel), and i want the sound to be perfect. So i need lot of sounds, and its hard to find good sounds from internet that are exatly what i want. If you could make video just for me that would be awsome!

  • just wondering, is there any way to sync this with a camera? for example connecting it to the mic input on a dslr?

  • is this the best portable recording device?

  • Thanks for the review!

(did we really need to witness the unpacking?)

  • @draeath "Unboxing" seems to have become a YouTube cliche in video reviews of products. To show another example... let's look at Hollywood. How many times have you seen a fruit cart get hit by a moving car or person?

  • do you have to buy the accessory pack on Amazon if you buy this?

  • @skillmyster666 no, they have both the combo packs as well as the recorders by themselves...

  • @futureman11335637

ok thanks, I bought it and it's great quality! :D

  • One question...

If I buy a Clip Microfone to clip on my jacket for Hidden Camera, and then put the jackstick into the H1, then the Recording Quality will be diffrent, but it would not pick up that kind of wind, will it?

  • So do you have to buy a separate microphone to use with it? I'm new to recording devices, could someone help me out?

  • @skillmyster666 you don't HAVE to buy a seperate microphone. Its self is a recorder, but you CAN buy one, and plug it in.

  • @sayeghpro

    Thanks :)

So is a microphone significantly better quality? Or is it pretty much the same without?

  • @skillmyster666 I don't have the H1, but after videos on YouTube the quality itself is pretty damn good. Unless you're using it for vocal recording, I don't think its nec. to buy an external mic.

  • @skillmyster666 I ain't got the H1, so I can't answer that. Sorry =)

  • @sayeghpro

Cool, thanks for the help though :)

  • You can put wav on the backside right?

I have also heard you can swtich in the menu the quality of the wav? Is this true? How?

  • Hey guys, if you enjoyed the review, and decide to buy one, be sure and use the Amazon link in the description!

  • great review

  • @weaponeer thanks, if you decide to order it be sure and use the Amazon link in the description!

  • great review, just 1 question, is that a hole for mounting on a tripod on the underside of the device, as i would want this to use on a small tripod?

  • @MatthewBryce yes that is a standard tripod mount... and if you do decide to buy it be sure and use the Amazon link in the description!

  • great review pretty straight forward and to the point

  • Thanks for good review.

  • Can you adjust input level while recording? Or do you have to stop and adjust. Thanks

  • @MezcalPromotions you can adjust the input level on the fly... if you decide to order it be sure and use the Amazon link in the description, thanks!

  • You are very good to explein all the feature of this mic I have two zoom H1 and an H2 zoom and I find both very usefull . and as you correctly said the Zoom H1 is much easier to be used right because it has not the menù - rarely I found a review so good as yours so very great job .

  • wow what a thorough test. great job man

  • this is good for short films right

  • great review first of all,

is it possible to plug the device to a mixer (small pl to aux) and record audio directly to the device from the mixer as it is? (for example, I have an organist, a saxophone player and a singer, all connected to the mixer, is it possible to get that as it is to the device in a concert or performance?)

  • @Silvernaor yup... you can simply plug a mixer that has a 1/8" oupout into the H1 and record...

  • Great review! This was very useful to me, but I´m still bouncing between H1 and H2.

  • @MrZantso thats up to you really... but i think the H1 is probable the better way to go, it looks cooler too IMO

  • i got a question, if there is too much wind/clipping noises, can i turn the "level" (as u have shown) down? and then will there be less clipping issues? coz im thinking of buying this to record my guitar covers and i mostly play metal. and i heard from a few friends this is a good microphone and its easier to use.

  • @jameschoi999 if there is too much clipping from loud noises then yes you can turn it down... if its from wind then no, you cant fix it by adjusting the levels...

  • Does any Micro SD card works in it or one need to get the MICRO SDHC by Sandisk??

  • @dilzar3 any one will work...

  • @futureman11335637 Thanks.

  • Excellent review. I just wondered if you reset the mic input level to 44-45 for the wind test, as it was raised to 87ish for the mic-in test? Great user friendly video, thanks.

  • @DonJuanV8 yeah i turned it down...

  • 6:35 lol... do you even know what mic level and consumer level is? Of course you're not going to get much noise from the mic when you plug it into professional line level

  • Pretty nice video, check also the H1 kit that comes with a bunch of useful tools

  • what stand would i use for this?

  • @Teutonic1250

    any tripod would work...

  • As someone from England, I think that persnickety is an incredibly cool word...

  • @bpdurrant yeah its kind of funny... now that i think about it... it almost sounds like an Aussie word LOL

  • It has ZERO background noise. Lower the input level, and talk higher. It is totally worth the money. Go for it!!! Great review btw.

  • when u record with the line in mic does it record mono? why was my left speaker playing only noise n the right speaker had the actual recorded voice. What do u suggest to use while shooting a feature/short film? without the mic is a better choice?

  • @hassaanislam the xlr to mini cable i was using did not duplicate the mono into stereo, but you can get cables that do...

  • @futureman11335637 hey bro im looking into geting this to make a small EP is it easy to burn to CDs with this? after their in your computer? i would love to hear back!

  • @jesussycar777 Yup, just use any burning app including WMP... if you decide to order it be sure and use the Amazon link in the description, thanks!

  • @futureman11335637 ok thanks man!! awesome vidoe

  • Great review but I have a question. What brand of microphone did you use? I am looking at getting the Sennheiser MD46 to use with the H1 (using a XLR/Mini jack cable) but wanted to be sure they would work together. Do you know if they would or not? Thanks again!

  • @wlh133 any mic should work with the right cable as long as it does not need phantom power... mine was made by electrovoice... spelling might be wrong on that LOL

  • Great review, you helped me pick between this and the H2. Thanks! :)

  • @GNRSlash94 no prob!

  • I have h 2 is it worth to sell it and get this one? As H2 is so ugly and very plasticy..

  • You have a very tough yt name to remember but I love your review of the zoom h1! I think the zoom is one of the most balanced products ever made. It has everything to make the user happy.. just everything! I ordered it and also I ordered the APH1. Looking forward to handeling it!

  • @samuraimacisthebest glad you enjoyed the review, yeah i agree, they listened to the customer with this product, which is something most companies cant do!

  • GREAT review!!!!

  • @alexstavi thanks

  • Anyone could tell me how different would this be from an Olympus LS-10 recorder, or another model similar?

  • I have to say that was one of the most interesting reviews of a product I've ever seen. I doubt the product is going to be suitable for my application ie: recording meetings. The reviews on Amazon lead me to asking 'Why would you need that, how would I apply that?', but you went to sufficient lengths to detail why they're needed so I understand the product, as if I had it right here with me in my hand.

Once again many thanks for taking the time to perform such an interesting in-depth review.

  • @tempac glad you liked it, i try and make my reviews somewhat applicable to real life uses, as apposed to a bunch of hypothetical scenarios!

  • Not saying it's crap. You just need to understand exactly how it's been wired if you want the best audio performance. (Balanced to unbalanced signal conversion is usually done with a transformer, not just grounding one side.) And listen to the noise difference between left and right in the demo.

  • Though it depends on exact wiring of your XLR/TRS adapter, the balanced XLR mono out from the mic was probably fed single-ended into one side of the stereo preamp, so not only were you experiencing inferior S/N on the side you were feeding, the preamp was being cranked 50dB with unterminated input on the side you WEREN'T feeding, so it is understandably very noisy.

If you listen v carefully 1 side at a time you'll hear the side with the mic signal is much less noisy than the side without it.

  • @stevehoge huh thats pretty interesting, so you are saying that my xlr to minijack cable is crap?

  • How well does this do for recording instruments? And by that i mean can it pick up a soft flute, and not get over powered by a drum set? (not at the same time of course)

  • @dogfiighter33 i recorded a chamber music concert with it a while back and i was able to get the flutes and the drums without clipping.

  • can this be used as a shaver too?

  • @azlanah ill have to test that!

  • @azlanah I just bought it. Surprisingly it can be used as a shaver.

  • Thanks, very nice review! Regarding the USB cable though, what type of connection is it? Mini A or mini B?

  • I play in a metal band. Do you have great quality for recording metal songs?

  • Thanks. Good review, I'll be getting one of those.

  • Can i use it also as mp3 player?

  • wavs are easier to edit in a PC, non destructive editing. mp3 are better recorded in smaller chunks so they can be edited more easily. I use Audacity audio editing freeware and wavs or mp3s import easily but the quality suffers with mp3 once editing has been done (trimming, fading in etc) because they then have to be saved as a new file and mp3s are a lossy format.

  • hi ! great review btw :)

and i just wonder if it will sound good if i like recording when i singing songs ?? will it sound like a pro mp3 songs ??

  • @narutokompis i have used it in concert halls and it sounds great... it also sounds pretty good if you speak right into it...

  • lots of hiss on both the built-in and the external mic.

  • @ui2p0 Very little hiss detectable if the recording level is set carefully. A high gain will sound hissy with very low level sound, but medium level setting on the input gain makes an extremely clear sound recording. I tried a silent 3am river scene with oystercatchers peeping and it sounds absolutely like real (through headphones).

  • I'm a journalism student who already owns a H4n, however I am considering selling it to get a H1 as it is lighter and more portable (and to make some extra cash.. I know..)... However I do find myself carrying a lot of equitment such as a DSLR and a video camera so I feel that it may be a good option to get the smaller and more portable H1, but I just want to be sure... I don't want to downgrade on audio quality...

  • @rad211090 I have a degree in journalism too, hope you like j-school! honestly, i have not used an h4 so i don't know about the quality differences with regards to the circuitry and built in mic elements, however the biggest physical differences are that the h4 can record 4-channel audio, it has xlr inputs, and of course it costs 4x as much!

  • @futureman11335637 Thanks for the reply! Does those differences to mentioned make any difference to the audio quality? My main concern is to downgrade in relation to size and weight... My H4n is quite large and heavy in comparison to the tiny and more portable H1, also because of the cost of my H4n I feel that I am always worried about it and dropping it ect, so having a H1 would take away some of that caution as it would also be a lot easier to replace if anything was to happen...

  • While recording can you listen/monitor on headphones via the headphone/line out socket? Or does the headphone/line out socket only work for playback? Thanks.

  • @snowypetrel the headphone/line out jack also works while recording...

  • @futureman11335637 Ta. I bought a H1 from Planetgizmo.co.uk including a 4gb micro sd card, mini tripod and Hama zipped pouch, for £99 uk pounds. I'm very happy with it.

  • I just wanted to know your thoughts on this one...

Is it possible to use the Zoom H1 as an external Mic for the TM700(or any other camcoder) ,which works like the Rode video mic or the azden? considering the Zoom H1 seems to have a decent microphone , and if it can also be used as a direct input mic (which records directly on the camcoder) that would be an awesome thing to have for 100$.

  • @y2kraviraj you could probably use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable from the headphone output to your camera, and it would function just like any other mic... although this one would need batteries!

  • sounds ok on its own, but with the external mic, the hiss is awfull.

  • @hotgypsylips I think it may just be due to the fact that the handheld mic has a very quiet output...

  • Great video, thanks for sharing, I have been looking at these.

  • @davomrmac i think its the best option right now...

  • @llx7 Yes, you can! :-)

  • I just bought this recorder and although it has good sound quality for money spent, I find that if it had proper casing, it would be completely in different class.

Now everything that touches the housing, causes noise. I wound't be surprised if even hearbeat through fingers could be heard. Loosy battery lid highlights these problems because it makes sharp noises if accidentally finger touches it. No other bad things to say about this.

  • @NesteHukka2 yeah if you turn the gain up on any mic you can hear a lot strange background noises...

  • When you plugged in your microphone I heard a lot of hissing noise. How can this be removed? I want to hook up a lav. mic to it, but I DO NOT want that hissing noise. Can you tell me how the hissing can be removed, with no post-productions, or is post-production necessary? Thank you.

  • @PhotoExtremist

a microphone puts out mic level output which is very weak. It requires a preamp to turn that signal into line level and then it can be plugged into the Zoom.

The reason there is so much hiss is that the input sensitivity of the zoom had to be turned up so high to pick up the mic level signal that the internal noise of the zoom was amplified.

the get the best out of any external mic you need a preamp, or use a field recorder with a built in preamp.

  • @PhotoExtremist you can use a denoise filter in your video or audio editor... however i think if you have a strong enough mic source hiss will not be a problem...

  • persnickity snickity... lol

  • Hello, I have a question. you can record a track and stop, but when you come again to record the first track is deleted? or create another file? I read the manual but I have not seen anything like that, thank's

  • @BROTHERINLAWBIKE No, it's just saved on the SD card as a file.

  • @BROTHERINLAWBIKE it always creates a new file when you start or stop, you can add to an existing file...

  • Great review! I am just wondering though, my band decided that we will buy this field recorder. We usually practice in my drummers basement. How would this do if I use this under very loud volumes?

  • @TheCoolDevices Automatic cut filter. I have two of these. Great for surround recording.

  • @TheCoolDevices it would be fine... just keep the levels very low!

  • Similar to a diy popscreen; I imagine you could also get away with pulling some women's stockings fabric over the top of the device if you don't have the dedicated windscreen.

  • I have a question, Can i use this for recording sound for a movie outiside between two persons?

  • @zhred that should be possible, if you could somehow attach it to a boom-pole, and had a good wind screen on it... but since it is so directional, you should make sure that the person holding the mic knows where the dialog is going in order to properly orient it...

  • @futureman11335637 - if you use 2 x "mono" mics (eg lapel) and a 3.5 stereo to 2 x 3.5 mono adapter you can get the 2 mics to record on Left and Right of the H1... (one mic per channel). Not "perfect" of course but you can post-process the left and right audio separately if the levels are way different....

(this is a good setup for "interview" type situations anyway, nor sure it would work outdoors / for live action!!!)

  • @futureman11335637 Thank you so much for the answer, its good with people that wants to help :) I was thinking of using the Zoom H1 with a FurryHead Windscreen and attach it to a pole is no problem :) But how far away from the mic should the person be ? whats the most?

  • Comment removed

  • Is it just me that every time I leave a battery inside of it, the H1 will eat up all the battery power ? I have to take the battery out all the time if I'm not going to use it. Otherwise, I'll have to replace a new battery...Or my H1 has something wrong ?

  • @NY152A Seems more people have your problem, you should try to get another one!

  • @keymatz what problem would that be?

  • Hey, great review - had a question: do you think this would be suitable for recording ambient sounds like different levels of traffic or walking around a city street and recording general environment sounds? It seems like it's only really good when pointed directly at something otherwise it has a phase issue.

  • @gramnicholas there is a phase issue, it is quite directional which i think is good and gives a more natural sound, you get some background sound but whats in front of the device is emphasized... as for your question i used it to record ambient noise in a casino and it sounded pretty good!

  • Thanks for the review on Zoom H1, which I was looking for. Thank you.

  • @mangoprojects glad you liked it!

  • Its really a very nice device. But u havnt demonstrated that, does the Low cut filter work for the external sound source like mic or the mixer??? What if somebody is ecording at a noicy and windy place, and using a clip on microphone??

  • really good review. the blinking led overload is a good point. only thing would have added was to show everything in terms of installing the battery and what to turn on first and stuff (for newcomers who have difficulty starting up products for the first time). also not sure if it has any internal memory, or if 100% of the memory is on the card.

  • @ytb917 All the memory is on the card... it does not seem to have any built in...

  • how would you compare this to the audio quality of a zoom Q3?

  • @mean0machine0 I believe they both have the same audio capsules

  • Comment removed

  • great! I wanted to see if it started up any faster than the H2 I have (one of the min points). This is fast.

  • why not show how to upload file to your computer? ... and mention there is NO SOFTWARE. mine just reads on zoom's screen "USB" and nothing happens on computer screen.

  • @oldbimmercoupe When i attach it to the computer it shows up as a storage device for me on windows 7.

  • What I don't like is there's only one jack. Can you use a splitter to get two microphones, say a boom and lavalier?

  • @IndyFlie I dont see why not... they make dual mono to single stereo audio adapters... it would have been nicer if there were two jacks though...

  • @IndyFlie The creator of this video missed something. His mic input (3.5 mm jack) cable, is in mono... to be able to use this device in stereo you need a stereo cable (2 rings, not 1). Use google to find the answers. Look for TRS STEREO JACK... and TS JACK. You should be able to find the difference. At first listen I thought this was very shitty to (I want to buy this unit as well but most likely will never use a mic direct in) and then went back to see if the jack was mono or stereo. good luck!

  • Thanks for the review and your time,5stars ;)

  • @GAVIOLITOM Glad you liked it!

  • I'm just curious how you could tell for the best recording level ? Is there any trick ? Generally, around level 44 you said ? Thanks again.

  • @NY152A I just picked the highest audio level where the there was no movement on the level meters, so that it was not picking up background noise...

  • @NY152A he higher you go the closer you get to clipping (distortion). To get a clean good sound from the device I suggest you watch those meters like a hawk when recording. if you have it positioned in a stable position like in a studio where it wont move around, go ahead and use the device for your purpose (voice, instrument) and raise the volume slowly till the meters reach around 60-70 % ... essentially this "input volume" is like "gain" on your mixing board. it determines the level.

  • Comment removed

  • There seemed to be a lot of noise when you used the xlr to mini jack. I want to use a shotgun mic with xlr to stereo mini jack. Would you recommend this or the h4?

  • @skast3r I think it would be fine as long as you had a STRONG source, most shotgun mics can take a battery for using a device without phantom power, like the H1, and with the battery they have a pretty strong signal... the mic i was using does not take phantom power and it does not take a battery, pretty unique, so the signal is not terribly loud... but remember that the H1 does not have phantom power like the H4, so you will need a shotgun mic that takes a battery!

  • Great! Nice demo vid and useful examples. I was wondering about the wind as well... need a windscreen for sure. Picking one up real soon now… useful vid. Tnx.

  • @mrkb2k glad you enjoyed it!

  • This was already a big help, great demo! But have you tested the H1 in very loud situations? I'm considering to get one primarily for recording band practices.

  • @anttilepardi Loud situations sound pretty good as well, just make sure the gain is low!

  • can the H1 be used as an external USB audio device like the H2 or the H4? I assume not, but its never said exactly...

  • @wonderer4711 I tried attaching it to a computer and it did not seem to recognize it as an audio device... since it came with no software, i am guessing this is impossible...

  • @wonderer4711 No, it can not I'm afraid.

  • thanks a lot for this review, I'm low on money and trying to figure out if I want this, the H2, or the H4. Have you tried recording music with the H1? That's almost entirely what I would be doing.

  • @91Shermanator I bought it primarily to record street performers through the built in mics, it should serve that purpose well since the built in mics sound pretty good and are almost noiseless. if you want to record music through the inputs, just make sure you have a strong signal or it will be a little noisy! glad you enjoyed the review!

  • Dude, you are breathing ultra hard. Chill.

  • @forgottenbow I did not realize my breathing was that noticeable... i will have to do a little EQ next time to get rid of that! I am usually pretty wound up!

  • Outstanding review. Very useful. Thank you!

  • @creativeguy91 Thanks!

  • Great review, do yoy have a Rode SVM or Mono by any chance that you could test it with? Intrested to see if it's better or no difference to the built in mic?

  • @iwatch3d Unfortunately i do not have any rode mics... although i found the built in mic to be very good with very little noise...

  • Where's the option for 96kHz/24 bit wav recording?

  • @Brian27R While you are in record mode you use the FF RW buttons on the side to adjust the recording bit rate...
