@ 0BigBuckeye9 one thing i found helpful with playing in the upper register of the horn, is to buy/borrow a trombone mouthpiece, buzzing that high on a tuba mouthpiece is slightly innefective, try a trombone mouthpiece. Only do this for practice dont sit their for an hour on a bone mouthpiece and kill your chops.
Im a senior and im using this as my scholarship audition piece and I gotta say, I hate the part at around 4:25 Its the only part that I cant play very well.
Gabe has been one of my best friends since we were in high school. He's one of the finest musicians I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Congratulations Gabe, on all your success. May your first child be a masculine child!
do you have any hints on how to get those high e's at the start of the third page (you should know where im talking about) the part thats insanely high and crazy cuz im good on most of the mvt just bad at that part
I'm working on this movement too, I am a music ed major. The only real secrete is to relax and make sure you are using the correct air flow. I had a friend working on this piece and he would practice it twice down an octave and once up to ensure he was hearing the correct pitches (if you can sing it, buzz it, and wind pattern it you can probably play it!). also working on scales by going up chromatically will help
ok dude dont give a shit what these kids are saying you sounded great! and also im starting to play it and this is freaking hard so you did great! are you studying anywhere?
I would just like to say, for all the people speaking badly of this obviously talented young musician. I want to see each individual who has passed a bad comment , to post a video of equal or greater skill. Then and only then does that give you the right to talk like that. I've been playing tuba for 12 years, I'm finishing college this year and all i can say is you guys and girls are obviously just jealous. So keep those bad opinions to yourself. try posting something helpful for once.
Ah man, I love This concerto, if I could play it like you I would be entirely happy, if I could hit the high notes I would be even happier. I'm working my way up the scales slowly but surely. I played the "second tuba" part for the university by my home and the woman playing the solo played on an F tuba, it seemed to be simpler for her. You are awesome at Tuba!
Phenomenal! He sounds like an ace professional. I mean for such a young buck he's TIGHT! The articulation is clean and crisp on the swift runs and the lyrical passages are smooth, sweetly soaring, and lovingly moving in nuance, like an ice skater gliding around effortlessly on air in the olympics. This boy needs an agent.
BTW What's SumoMan89 goddamn problem?! Did his father 1 day make him wear a dress to school on punishment back when he was in the 5th grade and he never got over that since?
@tubadude07 it is easy...it's a pretty shocking performance, I was playing it better when i was 15 or so. I'm now 17 and this isn't the best recording i've heard by a long way
Idk any professionals in america that use BBb. this guy is playing a CC tuba, u can tell bc the first F is fingered first valve, CC is much better that BBb
@tubaiscool actually, there are a fair few. And if you listen to British orchestras, they play on BBb's exclusively, and their performances are just as good as orchestras here. It's a matter of preference. Sure, CC is more popular here, but it is just ignorant to say that CC is much better. I guarantee you if you sit in an orchestra with a BBb, and play just as good as anyone else, not a single person listening will tell the difference.
@tubademon999 i agree with everything you have said, save for the exclusivity of BBb's, as EEb's are just as common over here. Sorry, just a minor point.
@ajdmonkey yeah i know, my bad. I didn't check the message before i submitted it. What i meant was that they dont play CC, for the most part. That was the main point that i was making.
@tubademon999 Actually, there is a little bit of a difference. The BBb is 18' long whereas the CC is 16' long. The big difference is that there is 2' less conical section and/or leadpipe. It's a little brighter sound to my ears than a BBb. But I've started playing an Eb (Besson 981) in my community orchestra and it's met with very good reviews. Harrild uses the 981 and a MW 2165 in the LSO. What sounds good, is good. But you'll sound like you no matter what you play on.
@tubademon999 Maybe so, BBb's are great to learn on, and if you get a good brand, you can get far but BBb's have a lot of pitch issues which cause manipulation in the embouchure which isn't a good thing. CC's stay in tune better and the response (for me) is great. Plus CC's are better for Orchestras because the fingerings are more comfortable for the keys they play in. If you use a BBb in most Orchestra pieces, you'll use a lot of 23 which generally aren't in tune. But yeah lol
@123coolmik actually, my friend and fellow student played this concerto on BBb, and he is phenomenal. He makes the E above middle C sound as effortless as this great soloist on this video.
He played this song at a decent level technically but he didn't play very musically. He tended to stay at the same dynamic level with the exception of a few slow passages and and could of done more with phrasing and streching out notes to give a greater importance to them instead of treating them all the same. But he did play the notes so I will give him credit for not making any major mistakes in what probably was a stressful situation.
For a pro, this guy's note clarity is terrible! Lovely higher register, but his mid register is horribly unclear, so many split notes. This is such a beautiful piece thought.
hey my senior was 15 when he performed this song. And he performed it better than this guy 1000 times better. Stop giving reasons for a bad performanace
Magnificent!, what a lovely piece, i've just got a copy of this piece from my student, and i wish i could perform it too, soon, i've performed r.vaughan-williams concerto in 2000, i guess this concerto is equally challenging... Bravo! Mabuhay! You really inspire us here in the Philippines.
beautiful higher register.. any tuba player knows that to everyone else we're measured on how low we can play.. to each other its how your tone comes out and how fluent your high register is..
Wow! That performance was fantastic. It is a great Gregson Tuba Concerto. Especially the way Gabriel Sears plays the music it flows beautiful. And the top E's was perfect. Good job, dude. One of my favorite pieces. Though, I have to say, I think I enjoyed watching the conductor more - haha. Reading through your comments, I see that you are studying with Sam and Pat. That's freakin' awesome, man. So far during my college "career", I've taken from two different tuba professors, both of which have studied alot with Sam and Pat. I haven't gotten to study with them yet, but I did attend a master class with Pat. Very cool guy.
Its a decent school for music, our top band is only half music major sadly. Weve had some outstanding players, but to counter that some real sucky players
You did a real good job man. Im a college performance major here in texas and I did that at the end of my hour long junior recital. You have some nice stuff for a high school student.
Thats cool, im trying out there for my masters, its one of my top 2 choices.....im working on getting an F since my school doesnt own one....Pat Sheridan and Sam Pilafan are amazing teachers as im sure you know....i really like my CC i own, my school doesnt own one...the F im trying to get is an old miraphone 180 since im poor
Right on man! When do you graduate? What's the other choice? What CC horn do you play on? Sam and Pat are amazing. The F I play on is a Yamaha YFB-621 and it's great!
I play on the Miraphone 1291 CC, which took ALOT of money, is why im going used for an F cheap.
I graduate in the Spring of next year (2009). Im trying out at several places, like University of Michigan, Witchia State University in Kansas, Michigan State, Baylor, Texas Tech, LSU, ect. Im basically trying to get the place with the best reputatation that will offer me a teaching assistanship so I dont have to pay much....its sad that my university doesnt own a F, Eb or CC at all...
Yeah thats a nice horn man! And definitely not cheap!
Right on man! Good luck with all your auditions, when they come! And yes, that is very sad that your school doesnt have those, where do you attend right now?
I attend Abilene Christian University in Abilene TX. Right now I wish my horns 1st valve wasnt acting up and being stuffy, maybe im just not playing well with a plague of flu going around
I will definitely be trying out at ASU. Do you think I should email Sam Pilafan and ask for graduate information
Is it a good school? Whos the tuba professor out there? Sucks about the flu!
ASU is a great school and you can email Sam to let him know who you are and such so you aren't a complete stranger when you show up. Just be aware that he may not respond. But I would reccommend emailing him.
@ tubaiscool, an easier way to tell is just by looking at the fifth thumb key.

Thank you!
It's a B&S PT-4, with a PT-44 Mouthpiece.

I think PT-44 is realy a good mouthpiece on 4/4 tuba
I use pt-20 + pt-44,and i think it sounds realy good
