To all those interested, the Chieftain mk 11 (the mbt we had before challenger 1) had (togs) the thermal imaging system & just as an aside I thought you might like to know, we also had a laser rangefinder in the 1970s on chieftain, prior to that, you had a Browning .50 'ranging' gun to bracket the target before firing the big 'un. 'Being an ex-chieftain crewman I know this for a FACT...!
If you look at the right hand side of the turret at 0:57 and at 3:34 they are quite different. I never knew they made such modifications to the CR1 so assumed that it was a CR2. Looking more closely it is obvious that it isn't a CR2 though.
WOW, thay are finally fitting them with Thermal imaging, Abrams has 3rd genration now,. I was surprised to hear that, and no Digital interlinking systems.
@ltcurry Are you a total spastic? Look at thr quality of footage, listen to the quality of sound, to me it shouts out "ANCIENT VIDEO!" This video is from the early 80s, we have had thermal imaging for ages. Do not confuse this with the infamous Challenger 2 which has been in service for a mere 13 years and has all the latest gizmos etc installed. This tank you see is the one we used in 1991 gulf war, Challenger 2 is our current tank and was used in the 2003 Invasion of Iraq
The M1 Abrams is basically technology taken from both challenger 2 and leopard 2. The armor, although not as thick comes from the ch.2 and for main gun the leo.2's 120mm is used. Abrams has very little of own inventions fitted.
You are wrong, they are very different. Only the Leopard 2A6m has APS (Active protection System) which protects it against missiles and most kinds of tank rounds before they hit the armour. the system itself is called AMAP-ADS you can search it on google.
So if a vehicle has a greater level of survivability and superior firepower compared to other MBT's, its not the best? Chobham was used on the CR1, but not the M1, it used a composite armour called Burlington, both same principals but different ceramic/material mix.
Hello TN-Dave, A good MBT needs to have a good blend of Firepower, Protection & Mobility. Even then training and how the tank is operated makes the difference. None are ever the best, due to development, evolution and differences in crew training. You are correct in as much as we used to call all reactive ceramic armour "Chobham" when in fact there were differences & only the Brit MBT's used the genuine Chobham initially. Cheers
i kinda hafta to agree with you there, grew up with the A2 model as a kid and it's a beautiful tank but an utter bastard to maintain. Of course the age of the MBT in it's current configuration is nearly over as current combat trends mean that the 120mm gun is overkill. Eventually you will see MBT's being converted to something like china's iron dove platform with 4 smaller guns for better infantry support. Ultimately it will of course depend on what a country expects to fight.
What Abrams would that be??? Its evident you don't have a clue. CR1 was better than M1A1 Abrams. And CR2 is in a different league to M1A2. CR2 has never been lost to enemy fire. Yet Abrams had been KO'd by the very same weapon systems used against CR2.....
the british sold these to jordan to threaten iraq...now they maybe fighting the israelis someday cool! all sides in the unholy land are religious fanatics and they are doomed to eat each other!
Well you need to get your facts right. There is no tank called the Challenger. This video is off the Challenger 1 prior to the introduction of the Challenger 2. Both tanks are varstly different and are far superior to the Abrams series.
we had a range day with the abrams, leopard 2 and a challenger back in the 80,s challenger hit more targets, leopard 2 was faster abrams drunk more fuel. i think it was a turbine engine in the abrams?
i know it works! But sorry to say....there was a tiger with an 88er which killed at over 2500! and we r talking back in 43! No offence! my remark has to do with the wear of the bore mainly...i support russian barrels coz they also use rockets by the way...OFCOURSE i respect the Challenger but...
Russian smoothbores are the most inaccurate cannon hence why they fire rockets, its not a bonus, its an attempt to give Russian tanks the same range & accuracy as NATO tanks. The missiles are out of date simply because to defeat modern armour you have to increase the calibre of the missile, which you cant because you would need to increase the calibre of the gun.
One thing I cant understand about British armour is why do they stick to rifled barrels....I think fin stabilized ammo in a smoothbore is a much better combination and has a higher life expectency
because it works! this gun holds the longest tank kill in history,5200 metres, i think the gun will change in the future, purely to bring it in line with NATO
We will never adopt smoothbores. We tried it on the MK2 Chieftain and didnt work and we tried it on the CR2. The ammo doesnt fit the turret and our current rifled cannon already is L55, we were way ahead of the Leo2 A6 vehicles in adopting a L55 cannon.
p/t 1 - L55 stands for calibre Length 55. The British do not name their cannons after calibre length like the Germans & US, ie L44 = calibre Length of 44. The L30 rifled cannon used on the CR2 is a calibre Length of 55 & has been used from day 1 when it entered service in 1994.
p/t 2 - The German Rheinmetall L55 entered service in Germany from 2000/1 (the Leo2 A6), thus the British were 1st to use a L55 cannon. Before trying to criticise me, why dont you read up on the topic first so you actually know what your talking about and refrain from using profanities to get your point across, its the lowest sign of intelligence.
so it was ONLY 100 meteres wrong..according to you (it was 5.2 anyway),not a full half a kilometre furthter than an Abrams kill...interesting argument..you fucking knob! the Chally is newer than the Abrams, and a better vehicle in every quality, get over it
We stick to rifled as they have an increased accuracy over smoothobore whilst firing APFSDS. We also are able to fire the multi-functional round HESH, whicl has an increased range over APFSDS. HESH is better than the smoothbore alternative called HEAT which is out of date simply because to defeat modern armour you have to increase the calibre of the round, which you cant because you would need to increase the calibre of the gun.
remember seeing the MBT in Lulworth with the proposed Chall 1 arse end with a chieftain turret -- weird thing but shot well and true with the 120mm and lads from the ATDU- would have been a good stop gap until the shah did a runner
sadly I dont, and understand what you mean about the confusion of info on painting. I used Tamiya XF-61 (dark green) on the hull of mine and then Tamiya XF-1 (black) on top to make a NATO camo paint scheme.
No, the CR1 in this video was a up-graded chieftain & cancelled order. The British were doing a new joint tank with Germany as a replacement to the Chieftain, but was cancelled & the Chieftain replacement program wasn't ready, so they used the CR1 as a temporary stop gap whilst the program was set up to develope the CR2. the CR2 like most countries do do up-grades.
The Challenger I's of the British Army have now been sold on to Jordan who now call it the 'Al Hussein'. It will replace their ageing fleet of Tariq tanks which are improved Centurion tanks and will work along side their fleet of Khalid MBT's.
now that , is a cool tank

1] There is no BEST tank in the world. The crew always makes the difference.
2] Chobham armour was developed in the UK & fitted to ATDU Chllenger 1's but first service use was by M1 Abrams.
