They felt [Studio bosses] they couldn't deal with having a film that was going to cause religious controversy.' So they stripped key scenes & elements from the final edit just before release.
Bill Donohoe, of the Catholic League for Religious & Civil Rights, called on parents to boycott the film, which worked in the US, however the film still made an incredible $400 million worldwide.

@symbolt Well, in the end it's a matter of taste. I can't stop anyone from liking it xD! However, I have read each book of this series like 5 or 6 times and to me it was terrible. Some very important scene we're cut and all the focus was on the bears when it's only a small part of the story in the Northern Lights. And don't get me started on the acting of Lyra or Lord Asriel... Anyway, this is only the opinion of a fanatic that expected a lot more from this!
@chaotickittie03 It's interesting, because as much as I can agree Lyra was different than in the books, I loved her acting - as well as Asriel's and Ms Coulter's. I didn't like that they removed some parts of the story, but honestly/objectively, it MUST be like that in a movie - a movie is just a version of the book that somebody imagined visually, never the book itself. I saw the actress who played Lyra in "Skins," and she's still amazing. She played her raw, but I loved it.
I think we need to start a petition for them to start the film series up again...With say warner brothers maybe adapting the film....and make it more true to the trilogy...
@FR3DKRU3G3R - the His Dark Material books are the BEST books I have ever read! seriously, go for it. I have read all the big ones; Harry potter, LotR etc. but none of them compare to this series. You will not be dissapointed!

@Mattingly97 Details are pretty sketchy. From what I've read it's not a direct continuation of the trilogy, but it follows Lyra a few years after the trilogy, so it's definitely a sequel.

I still haven't seen the movie, but I don't really want to. The books are just amazing, when i finish the last one, I was just like "NO IT CAN'T BE OVER. THERE HAS TO BE MORE" but sadly it was the end of my journey with Lyra. I read them a long time ago, I think i'm gonna go buy them just so i can read them again :)
half of the stuff in this trailer, (which i was very much looking forward to), was not shown in the actual film. i was really excited to see how they panned out the ending, and the movie just cut off at a really awkward part.

that was a great movie. there was a line in there about how the magisterium was there to tell people what they need to do because IT new better for the people than the people knew for themselves. a good example of an all powerful centralized government nanny state. i've noticed a lot of movies in the last decade with a similar theme. people do scream to be free :(

When I saw the trailer, I thought the movie was great! With good actors and visual effects... But when I saw it, I was completely disappointed! The action is too fast, they cut too many scenes from the book, just so the movie runs less than 2 hours, cause they wanted to make a movie for children... They even changed the order of the actions! It's nonsense! I wonder why they didn't want to make the 2 other movies...

people who are christians and catholics thought it was offensive because you know how in the movie they said the daemons are their soul but in animal form? theythink that because of what they called it Deamon. and don't say i made it up cause i'am a catholic myself.iand i know why.

@18Znug18 No. That is one reason but also if you listen it says, "the evil is the Magesterium." if you read, you would know that the magesterium is the Church..In this movie they are stating that God.. and the church is evil and wants to take over the world. The man who wrote this book said himself he is totally against God and wrote it to bash God and the church. So dont say that this story is bashing the church because the man who made this story said HIMSELF. that this story was against God

DEEPLY dissapointed by the film. HOWEVER they should go on and do the rest. IF christianity blocks their releases... well, they'd just be as bad as the book says... heck, it's not even rlly offensive, why would they bann it?

I don't see why christianity or atheism has to be brought into debate over this movie at all. I haven't read them yet but I acknowledge that the books are classics and beloved by a lot of people. I'm a christian and I ADORED this movie. I want them to make sequels!

@MrsPippinBaggins whether you enjoyed the hacked up movie is irrelevant; people bring christianity into the argument because by fault of the church the original storyline was hacked up in the first place. and since you haven't read the books you should know that they have a heavy anti-christian/anti-religion message...a message that wasn't translated into this film.

that was a great movie. there was a line in there about how the magisterium was there to tell people what they need to do because IT new better for the people than the people knew for themselves. a good example of an all powerful centralized government nanny state. i've noticed a lot of movies in the last decade with a similar theme. people do scream to be free :(

Just stick to the books- As always, they are far FAR better :-)

When I saw the trailer, I thought the movie was great! With good actors and visual effects... But when I saw it, I was completely disappointed! The action is too fast, they cut too many scenes from the book, just so the movie runs less than 2 hours, cause they wanted to make a movie for children... They even changed the order of the actions! It's nonsense! I wonder why they didn't want to make the 2 other movies...

i love these books so much and was so looking forward to the movie. but they changed it so much it might as well just be a different story! boring. i feel the casting was awful aswell. lyra was bad and they should have got unknown actors for everyone. would have been very fresh and realistic if they did. and saying the golden compass rather than alethiometer pisses me off too!

Don't wanne get anyones hopes down but there almost certainly never will be a sequel. Once a big trilogy like this is shelved, no company wants to take the risk of picking it up again. Especially since "The golden compass" cost 180 million dollars, no one is willing to invest that amount of money in a 2nd let alone a third movie...

This is Philip Pullman's atheistic allegorical response novel to C.S. Lewis' Christian Allegorical Novel, The Chronicles of Narnia. But to decide within the both of them, The Chronicles of Narnia is way better than His Dark Materials Trilogy.
