@thejobloshow I worried that I was the only one who recognized that Prince's newer classic, "Little Red Corvette " has the same melody in its chorus. lol
This is one of the Funk Brothers' best instrumental tracks . The guitar section really laid down the groove provided by Eddie Willis , Robert White (d) , Bob Babbitt , and Dennis Coffey .
This is a beautiful song. Diana did a great job on this. This is how I look at death. The person simply went up the ladder to the roof so they could see heaven much better. The song could have many meanings. I just love it so.
@urblhoops hoops what an honor to have been or being related to Flo i also Loved her and her voice my condolenses of Flo's loss the Supremes are and will be a part of my life the mickey1955
been a fan of this song since i was 3 years old, we used to jump up everything the chorus came around, it is spiritual along with Stone Love the follow up.
the Supremes where and will be hot there musuc is just magical I"m sitting just dancing to THE SUPREMES eat your heat out diana ! these girls women are beautiful so talented!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3 gorgeous women with beautiful voices and harmony. Add a fantastic song with unbelievable orchestration and driving beat, Motown in the 60s and 70s could not be touched and reigned supreme [no pun intended].
Check out how starting at 2:28 she just starts "breaking out" - totally kicking it up to another level (even after the whole song has been an unbelievable ride) ; as if she's busting out to a newer, even greater feeling of joy - that is such a lost art.
sure did. audiences at the time were still missing Diana lamenting that the group wasn't the same. that was fortunately, true because Jean Terrell refused to be a carbon copy of Ross which is what the public wanted. Today we can appreciate Jean's vocals as they stand
How often I find myself humming this tune...it reminds of Florence Ballard for some reason...perhaps because she will always be a Supreme....and as the song says, "sing of love and understanding". A really great song!!!
Only the Beatles outsold them in the '60's and in a stretch of thirteen singles they released twelve of them spent time at #1, a feat unmatched by any artist in history. A remarkable group and still influencing female singers of all races and musical persuasions to this day.
This is possibly one of their greatest songs, of the scores of fantastic songs they did. It may be in the top five of all their fabulous work. It's seems to be coming from another plane of existence into our reality. That kind of pure magic that happens in very few songs, either recorded or live. There's a timeless "feel", an everlasting effect; the music & lyrics, sung as they did in that recording session just has that transcending quality.
Also sample 'Stoned Love'; the other song by this trio that has the same kind of unusual quality. Both songs, 'stoned love' and 'up the ladder to the roof' are among the best of the best recordings in the entire history of the Supremes as a group.
like Stone Love, this is a great song and Jean Terrell has a wonderful voice, but they should have renamed the group. The Supremes without Diana Ross is like The Beatles without Lennon and McCartney. And Harrison and Starr.
Great job on the video, stawberry; beautiful pics of The Supremes...I must admit, I like the slightly faster tempo of the original by The Nylons; but this version is awesome too...thanks again :)
Sorry, but the Nylons are not the ones that made this song originally. The Nylons did not come unto the scene until 1979. The Supremes made this song before that group ever started.
Wow...makes you wonder if Jean Terrell and Cindy Birdsong would have been big stars instead of "replcement" Supremes...great song, though. Love the Supremes.
This song was playing when I attended my very 1st teen party. It was crowded and in a dark basement. The only light was street light shinning was through the open window. Great memories of growing up in Baltimore.
best record recorded by the New Supremes after they parted from Diana Ross in my oppinion. Jean Terrell has such a significant voice like Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops!
OMg you have done such a wonderful job...I have been searching for this song done correctly and U did it!!! Great photos and I will be emailing this to many of my friends of the '70s.
Thanks for the heads up on this one. This was one of our themes for our senior class in high school. I always get melancholy when I hear it !! And thanks, strawberry, for posting.
OOOO I LIKE THIS. I like the production on this and I didn't realise Jean sang so tenderly and smoothly it's nice, I'm definately gonna pay more attention to the 70's Supremes
Yea! They are WELL WORTH the paying attention to! I think that's the problem. They WERE, but the company played them 'down' to make you NOT think they were so memorable after a spell! But THEY ARE!!!!!!
It is FACT that Berry hardly toured with them after Diana left, he was always with Diana, also they didn't do as much tv appearances and didn't perform in as prestigous places as the diana and flo days but oh well they did a GREAT job keeping the dream alive, even though it really ended when Flo was fired as it was no longer women who had grown up together and had the same dream
I can remember waiting for the first appearance of Jean, Mary and Cindy on Ed Sullivan. Everyone was nervous that The Supremes would die without Diana. It was clear from the performance and this song, they would continue. Jean, Mary, and Cindy are singing this without help.
The Supremes were always a favorite of mine. Just because Diana left didn't mean they would die. Once again the magic happens in the snake pit. As a bass player I truly appreciate the funky lines that Jamerson played for this tune and how it shadows the vocals(a Jamerson creation). It's one of the most satisfying songs I've ever learned to play. The Supremes and the Funk Bros is the Motown Sound that will never happen again. How sad!
One of the best line ups of The Supremes, through the years. I'm so glad you honored Florence. Thanks for the great pictures of a very special group of women.
I think that either Jean or the Andantes are singing with Mary and Cindy at parts of the background in this song. You can hear other voices esp. at the end.
Who ever it is, they sure do a great job a smoothing the harmonies out.
This has always been a favorite of mine! I love the harmonies in this and Jean delivers a sensual, tender and sincere lead! To top it off, the instrumental is great, also!
