"Taking a chance on love" is one of my favorite jazz standards..and with the voice of my favorite singer Jane Monheit becomes a masterpiece of rare beauty
thin voice..who encourages these people,,she can sing..shes beautiful..but her voice...not much there,,,kinda pathetic really....the band swings..she..not so much....
I know that I'm gonna get a lot of flak for saying this but while I think she's beautiful and sexy and has a nice singing style, her voice is very lean and "yappy" sounding.
She needs to learn to STFU ans sing onstage. I hear a llttle bit of very young Ella in her phrasing. Cool,.... I've heard her really suck ( go to "Cheek to Cheek") she just shouldnt do that tune
@mamachip could it be that you can't blow your nose on vocals? ...so you find it exhiliarating to demean one of the classiest , swinginest chicks in the artform today.....how many gigs do you sell out, pray tell? Do you even earn a living at it like she does? Accept everyone's contribution to the art....everyone has something to contribute in their own special way. It's not all about chops. How many cats cream in their genes looking at you, mama???????????
Wow! Best version by far I have heard of this classic.
I can't decide which is the best part - the beginning, the middle, or the ending with the scatting and soaring notes. The band is sensational - every note made sense to me. She is singing this song with the intensity of someone who really had recently fallen in love. The flirt with the drummer (now her husband) during the introduction when she lifted her leg (0:37), and the touching of her heart at 2:57...phew!
She has a distinct sound, and it is so pleasant to hear a new sound. It makes such a big difference to listen to the good old jazz standards with a fresh new voice.
As an old man - I did not realise that singers like this were still being born. She is FANTASTIC and I am sure will go down in jazz history as one of the greats.

Sorry to say this but there is a new singer coming on the horizon from Sacramento: Diane Peterson who is much, much better on this song. The band did not really hit the groove, ever in this song and I didn't really hear it from her either.
@mtone9317 - i searched diane peterson on youtube but now vd....would you have her video....i heard renee's version but i like this better, except for the " too much ornamentation of the melody" bit :) thanks for uploading this video....

really nice, but I felt sometimes there was a bit too much ornamentation of the melody, I know its jazz, but i have heard others sing this much more simply and enjoyed it more.
She thinks that she is a jazz singer but she is not. She tries but doesn't sound like a jazz singer. Listen June Christy singing the same song, you will understand.
On the other hand, I think she is a jazz singer who happens to have a beautiful and melodious voice. I've already heard June Christy and she also sings beautifully. However, I still prefer Jane Monheit.
Been playing the Bass since I was a young man and thought I'd seen it all when Diana Krall came on the scene. This woman can sing her heart out. She is one of the most exciting singers to come along in a long time. She is also very sexy.
I couldn't agree more with you. How fabulous and magnificent Jane Monheit is. I'm a great fan of her. Have you ever seen/heard her performing "I won't dance" and "Baby, it's cold outside"?
Hi and thanks, I will see what I can do. If you search for David Cavill on You Tube, one of the sites (not mine) has me singing at the 606 club in London. I would point out I had a cold at the time - its better now!
Thnak you for posting this. I was especially pleased to hear and see this track because I am singing this number at a jazz concert at the West Wiltshire Music Centre at Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire UK next Monday 1st December
Some suggestion brefordeau. Leaving out the well known ones (Ella, Sarah, Peggy etc) try listening to:
Clare Teal, Clare Martin, Rachell Penell, Lianne Carrol, Gwyneth Herbert, Tina May, Anita O'DayDiana Krall, Stacy Kent, Mark Murphey (male but a marvellous interpreter of song), Seleena Jones, Lezlie Anders. I've left out the well known ones but these are the best in my opinion although there are others.
It amuses me that everone has an opinion on the quality of performers voices. Enjoy it the way it was meant instead of analysing every little bit. Unless you can do better; which I kindly doubt; maybe you should just listen and enjoy, after all it's what jazz is for.
Another big reason to keep an open mind with what is possibly a new artist, to some, like me. To hear great singers and their elegant music here, is truly a luxury that I am greatful for. Big thanks to my friend, and Bretodeau, for sharing this! What an exceptional singer with very fine musical accompaniment, rhythm, and
Right on! You have an excellent ear, Jalex. Although Jane is undeniably unique in her own right, the color notes she reaches for to sweeten, enhance and simply dance through a song are indeed playful, imaginative...and yes, reminiscent of the late great Miss Ella. Jane's mastery of her craft and magnificent palette of notes are simply transcendent. Strong and graceful...like a prima ballerina.
See Jane. See Jane sing. Sing, Jane, sing! Her tone, resonance, interpretation, playfulness and execution is glorious and inspiring. And to those who are quick to criticize...please present your credentials. What? None, you say? Well then, that explains it. Kindly leave the artistry of music to the professionals. Like Jane.
