the new gen of m249 has 2 load ports 1 for mags and 1 for standard linked ammo the mag port is mainly for just in case theres maged ammo but no linked ammo left

They were going to replace all M4s/M249s with the M8, which was based on the Heckler & Koch G36 (which is from Germany, not France). From what I understand it was supposed to be an excellent weapon, but the project was cancelled. Why, I don't know, but I'm sure the Pentagon had a lame excuse. Either way, the SAW is a pretty decent weapon.
