  • That is how I hurt my shoulders

  • He's just advocating good form on the bench press. The press is generally better for sports tho.

  • dumbbell press is great too. I prefer dumbbells for the stabilizing muscles, plus they're easier on the shoulders.

  • not pec minor , coracobrachialis .

  • One problem i have at my gym is there is only one trainer there who knows proper form (Ex powerlifter) and he is rarely there, No body else at my gym knows how to bench and says that my form is shit when i use he kind in this video. The only thing is, this video didn't cover the setup, upper back/full body tightness, back arching and all the other things that are just as important as bar path. As the other gentlemen pointed out in their comments down there this video is half done.

  • Stick to one on one training dude. I've been watching a couple of your videos and it looks like you know strongman pretty well and hell probably even a good amount about form, but this is a shitty tutorial on the main aspects of a proper bench. Your video is halfway done, if you wish to keep giving your knowledge away for free that is.

  • One of the better tutorial videos on youtube about the bench..!

  • Please do a video on how to shoulder press properly

  • Turn the fan off.

  • you talk about other topics than the video, WAY TOO MUCH but good videos dude.

  • I'm glad i saw this!!! I've been using a wide-grip during all of my bench presses(regular, incline, and decline), bad advice given to me by some Asian guy on youtube. i have been feeling some shoulder discomfort. Does this elbow position work with other presses other than normal bench????

  • i was not expecting that voice when i saw the thumbnail

  • Whats your thought on Overhead press for baseball players? I know a lot of coaches don't want overhead work because they say it causes tightness, but I can't see how if its performed correctly with a squeeze of the traps at the top.

  • @newguy3431 hey im no expert by any means but i currently play D2 college ball and it does cause tightness in the way of sorness.by thats because of the muscle being worked so i dont reccomend you you do heavy sets during season. but in the off season when i "bulk" up for the season i currently have worked up to 225 for reps in seated and standing barbell overhead press and our strength coaches here even encourage us overhead pressing. as long as u stay flexible and stretch its ok

  • @cecilbdemented during the season i still lift weights but at a much lighter weight up to about 60% of my maxes and for less volume as well. jsut to keep the muscle and strength there but not to interfere with my performance on the diamond. hope that helps man

  • nothing new here - but good start for beginners...

  • thanks for the video.

  • The infamous sweaty armpits, a gym goers worst nightmare.

  • @bags225 Then i guess you're not a "real" gym goer. Because a real gym goer isn't afraid of sweat!

  • My shoulder was beginning to hurt after I benched and I told my friend who went to a strength coach. He said the first thing his coach taught him was how to bench again and this was the exact tip.

  • the best way to bench! I started to bench like this two years ago after shoulder injury, no pain any more.

  • i just started bench pressing, and did the bad shoulder thing, thanks alot for saving my shoulders!

  • sounds like frank caliendo as jim rome

  • got a ? should i arch my back when benching, stick my rib cage out. I been looking some people say yes and no.what u think.

  • @mingoreyes1 arch ur back BUT keep ur butt on the bench!

  • @mingoreyes1

Hmm i don't know, but I have pain sometimes in my upper back when i do an arch

  • @mingoreyes1 yes. don't let your ass leave the bench during the lift, but get a nice arch and squeeze your shoulder blades together. this will pull your shoulders back to help further prevent injury, as well as giving you a more solid base to support the weight and shortening your range of motion slightly.

  • pause at 3:36.5 hahah

  • keep up da good work man

  • how badass would elliott be in MMA!?!

  • thank you for the video. makes alot of sense.

  • he should compete at talking shit competition

  • talking in videos = LAMEST EVER

  • been benching correctly natural pretty crazy

  • WHAT ABOUT THE SET UP??? thats important !!!

  • what about shoulder press, thats more important that bench i think

  • how do i undo the muscle imbalance from all the years of masturbating. I mean my arms are starting to get lopsided.

  • @edasnoraa Start poking your gf more

  • im one of those kids and i started to tuck in my arms more whcih i realized i did less wieght but it help my technique so much now cant wait for the end of the month

  • you seem like a good trainer. wish ii could afford a traiiner to make a program for me

  • i prefare to use free weights, on a bench. Works shoulders aswell and chest good video !

  • can u show a video for proper bench press with a dumbbell also? thanks.

  • good video, though i wished u woulda showed the proper form with the camera pointing downward to show an aerial view. it woulda looked more clearer. maybe have the camera man stand on a ladder and shoot down on the guy lifting. thanks.

  • I wish I saw this before I fucked up my shoulder. This should be favorited by beginners all around. Still, although not at 100% benching like this has dramatically taken the pain out of benching.

  • @misterRDF yeh i noticed the look on the guys face when he did the wide grip he was in pain i have been like that for years evenb when i reduced the weight i guess its been my form all along.

question is i feel a lot weaker when i bench like he was doing in the begining how do i rectify this ... and it was vice versa for this guy he felt stronger in the first few reps

  • I have a rotator injury and havent been able to bench for a while cus i used to do it like that, this tip just made my day i can bench a good weight again thanks to you! its all love man!

  • thanks man, you saved my shoulders

  • u a beast man. i was taught to do it with my elbows flaired so im gonna try it with the 45 degree angle. My average bench is about 130 right now and i weight 140. How much higher do you think i could go. Im wanna try tuh do one rep of 200, but i know thats A LOT of weight. Any suggestions would be appreciated

  • Hey elliott,

I just have a short question. My triceps are way stronger than my pecs, I can reverse grip bench almost as much as my regular bench, should I still be using the 45 degree angle or would that just take away from my pec training? I usually just bring it in a couple degrees from 90 and go down to the bottom of my sternum. I'd really appreciate the help!

    Thanks

  • some of us have to use wide grips cause our arms are way to long...

  • Not only baseballplayers should use this Technic.. EVERYBODY should use this technic, because it pushes alot of stress off the shoulders.. Therefore u wont get so high injury risk in the shoulders :p

I've allways used this technic, and it works great :-D

  • Hey Elliot, cheers for the bench press tip. do you think using the technique you showed will also improve the amount I can lift?? Also do you think a narrowers or wider grip is better for the bench? Thanks Regards Chris

  • oh so this is why my right shoulders been hurting LOL

  • 0 dislikes just goes to show how great this is!

  • Solid Video Elliott!

  • elliot u r a BAWS!

  • so is that below the nipples or on them? im a newbie, hehe

  • Bet he's got legs like a sparrow

  • @mutsnuts1989 LOL watch the other videos

  • ]; i do my bench press like that, ehh this made me sad....

  • You look like and sound like Tito Ortiz, get that alot ?

  • Do more back work to balance it out.

  • if u have short arms u use close grip if u have long arms u use wide grip

  • Thank you! Now I know why I feel pain every time I train chest. I've been training wrong for 2 years! I will start training like you described . No wonder my shoulders are bigger than my chest! It's so obvious now when you've explained it :D

  • Wow...finally a trainer with some fucking brains! Kudos.

  • Great video..!! You definitely know what you're talking about. I switched to this method on bench after hurting my shoulder about 4 years ago, and have not had any problems since which has allowed me to get stronger.

  • yo, thanks for the this video my shoulders were both injured during football season and i have been trying to keep and inhance my bench since then. Imma try this style durring my next work out and see if it helps. thanks again.

  • bench pressing is always good but it depends on your technique and what sport you play to know how much weight you should be lifting.

  • this guys knows his stuff good looking out

  • Comment removed

  • Can benching remove man boobs???lol

  • @ReverseMyCurse1 not completely diet lower your body fat and work upper chest more than lower since you do not want to build to much lower chest...

  • Bro I love the site! What are your creds? I like your discussions! Get at me!

    Curtis Clay

  • When it comes to doing the "Barbell" Bench Press it is truly not a desirable lift for baseball players and this is do to the fact that I restricts the rotator cuff muscles from getting there full workout in. Baseball is all about the 4 rotator cuff muscles when it comes to throwing a baseball player.

But with that you can supplement that lift with a dumbbell press. That is the alternative. Shocking the nervous system is key.

PS- Tell your buddy to get his lats tight when he performs the lift.

  • when i turn my elbows in it causes my wrists to start hurt, so could you help me with fixing that?

  • I have one question. Is it exactly same form to do dumbbell press??

  • In short make a elbow correction like a powerlifter.

  • This guy inspires me.

    I just subscribed.

  • i like dis guy!

  • Good vid

  • So for bench press, where am i suppose to touch the bar on my chest? i usually just go below the nipple line

  • @FoolishInTheEnd

That;s what it looks like in the vid to me

  • dear elliot.. FUCK YOU!!!!!!!

  • fuk this dudes the man!lol

  • 3:36 "Don't know their 'shit' " and he laughed about it lol!

  • i seen ppl do wide grips like that, it looks stupid it makes no sense to me. but i like teh bar going across the top of chest with a closer grip will that not grow the triceps?

  • So your saying the Vince Gironda Neck press is tearing my shoulders up?

  • hey Elliott, my strength coach at school to use a wider grip and that way i will be able to get more weight with my press. Is this true? and if so is it bad for my shoulders to do so and is there any way to make a wide grip bench not hurt your shoulders? btw I'm 14 and a freshman i play d-end, i weigh 204 and i'm 6'3 and i can bench 185 3 times. i'm looking to improve my press for varsity next year

  • Elliott, i have pain in my shoulder when i bench press. Mostly impart to me not knowing how to bench properly at one point. Now i have a bit of pain in my right shoulder. I stopped benching and shoulder pressing to allow my shoulder to recover. The pain still lingers but i really want to bench again. Is the pain a problem. will it eventually go away. Whats the deal man haha

  • DUDE thank you!!

  • mm really helped build mass for me thanks

  • i'm 14 and really getting into weightlifting but i was told by one of my baseball trainers that bench pressing would tear your "rotator cuff" in your shoulder. so my question is if i bench press like the way you present it here will i still gain the same amount of strength in my chest and triceps?

  • I didn't even know that and I got signed up in the gym about 2 weeks because I got tired of lifting at my house. But I do like football and wrestling weight lift and i am one of the strongest lifters at my high school but now I have schedule for every day is a different part of the body except on legs. But then on chest and biceps I'm gonna try that because today I did chest and biceps and my shoulders felt soar and I thought it was my formation but next week going to try that form thanks bro.

  • Awesome vid Elliott!

  • Great explanations and truly helpful!

  • do you have your NASM cert?

  • I have question for you :)

I'm bodybuilding, not weight lifting or power lifting. So less weight etc. And I don't understand thing with benchpress, way you are showing it, is very effective, and good for shoulders, but, let's say you are working out upper chest, how can I train my upper chest with such method? Point is to keep bar right above rib cage (end of it) and upper chest is below neck, so how is possible to train upper chest without killing shoulders? Thanks :)

  • @JohnnyHMV1 there was an article in a health magazine that i cant remember what is called right now, but it said that scientist in japan measured the muscles working on variants of bench presses and it turns out that a reverse grip incline bench puts 35 percent more work on the pecs and off the shoulders. maybe you can try that.

  • @spidanez

Reverse grip, interesting, thanks for feedback mate! I will check it out on my next chest workout :)

  • Luke 1

37For nothing is impossible with God."

  • wish i had of known that a few years ago when i was i hitting the bench, great advice to save your shoulders. nowadays i go more towards conditioning and cardio, all of your knowledge is explained in a way thats so easy to understand.

  • Basically the difference between avg joe bodybuilder form, and good powerlifting form

  • Google Listen up!!! Give this guy sponsorship!!! His Good!!!

  • wow that gym looks like its burning hot!!!! i love the winter!!!!

  • I got a short question for you, my football team started weight training last week and we have a new coach and he said that its better to do the bench press with a closer grip, so were the lines end is were my hand is doesnt that keep my elbow from flaring out there, what if they still do, i just dont know to much about it thanks, i love your videos they help me alot, and when i make it to the pros ill mention your name haha

  • @dboyz692002 he explains how t0o bench in this video just follow this technique your coach is one of the coaches that as Elliot says "don't know their shit"

  • @dboyz692002 - if your elbows still flare, despite the close grip, it means that you have a strength ratio imbalance between your pec minor and triceps... basically, you need stronger triceps and to stretch you pecs.

  • @dboyz692002 Just like he said, the triceps are actually the most important muscle for bench if your technique is on point, although it's more of a full body exercise than most people realize. Make sure you are bringing the bar lower on your torso (below the chest where the ribcage starts to separate) to force those elbows in. Dave Tate has a great vid on proper bench technique.

  • @dboyz692002 if you use a close grip you work more the triceps and the middle of your chest

  • We <3 Sweaty Chris.

  • Can somebodt give my a Full upper bady mass building workout (chest, arms, abdominal, back, shoulders)

  • Thanx man ;))

  • is bouncing the bar off your chest considered cheating?

  • @ChicanoRockero

Ya, it definitely is. Depending on how hard you bounce it, you could be cutting out 30% of the motion which you would otherwise have to be controlling with your muscles. It is best to touch the bar lightly to your chest.

  • Elliot you're awesome! hehe I learned to bench press WRONG then hurt shoulders in 2008. I wish someone told me this in 2002.

  • Used to perform 330lb neck presses with feet in the air ankles crossed for upwards of 20 reps and 405lb to neck for 1 in same fashion...up to the age of 39. Now at 49 I continue to do so but at lesser weight. Seems to make my bench press to top of rib cage (performed only 1% of the time) easier. I do this mainly for upper pec development and rarely ever perform shoulder presses since benching works front delts a lot. However...I agree with you, pitchers and QB's don't need big benches.

  • A no brainer but wrapping your thumbs around the bar... I see a lot of people not doing that and sometimes can lead to injury due to a loaded bar slipping from the hands and landing on your rib cage. Not a pretty sight

  • This is original? This is just "repeating" things we've already heard. Let me know when you have something NEW to add...

  • elliot, hey man ive just started watching your vids there great an i always learn something new like in this video i was told to bench like the second example but after watching this i will try tucking the elbows i have been having a soreness and not the good kind in my right shoulder and i have a feeling its because of the bench now anyway thank you keep up the good work and vids

  • Good stuff here Elliott!

  • nice to see you again buddy

  • Elliott you are back to posting training info ... great. I agree, you don’t skip the bench press, just do it right. Working your back will also balance out your muscles. Thanks for the post. Smitty, from diesel crew, has an awesome youtube video on how to bench press (technical with demo).

  • ill give it a try! (the proper way)

  • Elliott, I think your videos are brilliant! You know your shit and you do them in one take which backs that up. Keep up the good work and best of luck in your ongoing recovery.

p.s where is that awesome intro music?

  • @phillymacster - thanks! i kinda threw this one together last minute and just wanted to get it out there... no editing ;)

  • Wouldn't hurt to mention arch at back in order to save shoulder joints even more... :-)

Other than that - GREAT VIDEO

  • @BAMFsfd - thanks, yea... i should have mentioned that also.

  • wow. i just favorited this video. i play baseball and during my high school season threw 85-89 and once the season ended i hit the weight room to get ready for summer, and benched. and i was doing the bench wrong just like you demonstrated here, and i wondered why my fastball lost so much pop. doing the bench the wrong way tore up my shoulder and i lost probably 5 mph on my fastball. thank you so much for making this video and showing me what i was doing wrong.

  • Finally! My answers on how to bench press have been answered! Thanks Elliot!

  • What about people with longer arms? Would you still recomend them to use a closer grip?

  • Very true! The bench press rules and doing it right will help your strength, power and muscularity!

  • Elliot you should post videos on how to properly perform the dead lift and squat.

  • For the best power development perform the Olympic lifts. Why Elliot aren't you posting up Olympic lifting vids?

  • great vids

  • Hey Elliot, glad to see you back at 100% now!

  • @jreily88 -- eh, more like 85%... notice that I wasn't doing the demo, lol

  • @strengthcamp

Ah well, still better than what you've been at the past few weeks. Keep up the work!

  • i would never stop doing bench press its my favourite exercise

  • good vids
