I think you take more damage from charger when you down, if you watch you see nick fighting against it at first then when he goes into down mode he just goes limp.

Tha game tell the player to push Y (yellow on X-Box controller) to switch weapon and X (blue on X-box controller) to grab first aid or revive a team mate...

It's also the D-Pad to switch between weapons... and he can't aim well due to the joystick(check the part with the sniper rifle when he shoot his partner in the shoulder at 2:03)
