America did not invent the automobile. German inventors Karl Benz (1844-1929) and Gottlieb Daimler (1834-1900) are both credited and there examples from France that ran on steam from even earlier.
America does however show a genius for mass production and making things work but whilst I am pro American it is annoying when they claim to have invented every single thing on earth.
