MH does play all the right chords but I think ste2 is referring to his strumming technique. It's a bit heavy handed. He's hitting open strings sometimes on the chords that should either be muted or or not played at all.

It's not a big deal, he's a singer after all not a guitar player.

Absolutely - in fact it's more than passable. It's just not quite the way it might  be if it was played by a pro guitarist. That said though some songs (and this is one) often sound better when they are a little bit raw, it adds to the mood.
