Neat video! I saw a photo taken from the same shot in TRAINS mag once. When you say it's "out of service" do you mean they don't do street running anymore?
This is a scene that will never happen again. The future of the old Monon north of New Albany is clouded. I dont forsee the line lasting more than a couple more years until its only empty railbed. Southern Indiana is turning into a railroad wasteland much like the upper tip of Lower Michigan is now.
I caught a southbound INRD on June 29, 2009 after he met a northbound rail train at Vernia in New Albany. This is 15th street which has been all re-paved now. You can still catch the local (J772) going through here to switch Pillsbury but that is it. From Pekin north the former Monon is used for car storage. I assume this was a train of bombs. I remember the Soo Line coming in sometimes would have a few boxcars of bombs picked up at Crane and the NS Police would have to check the seals.
The line from mitchell to louisville is not out of service but just not used. I think the last train that came threw Salem was around June 28. Now I think they use the Louisville & Indiana up to Seymour,IN then west
Ah, nice to watch, Chris. The barking dogs, The K3, our cameras clicking away, a carload of foamers coming and going, and a paper cup (right corner) swirling in the wind around all combine for a great roll-by. I'm surprised none of my White Castle Air Releases were captured on this one!

where is a good place to see 4001 or other INRD for railfanning? What is a place that has a lot of INRD traffic almost everyday?

My hometown. I think it is sad we don't see this scene anymore...just the Pillsbury local late at night every once in a while.

Great video. What date was this? Was this before or after the line was placed out of service?
Taaaarail 2 years ago
Sorry about that. I've added dates to every video that didn't have one already.
This train was operated before shutdown, as trains weren't allowed to operate after it was placed out of service.
