Jojo Mayer teaches this exact same technique and neither Dave nor Jojo are sloppy. This is just the very VERY basic of a single stroke. The thing that comes next is probably control over that rebound.
This seems sloppy? Dave Weckl is an amazing drummer. I am very sure he knows what he is talking about and to be honest if you watch him play with this approach it doesn't seem sloppy at all. He is such a relaxed player and is inspirational to watch. You should all take something from this.
So when you play traditional grip do you tilt your left shoulder down alittle so you can have better control over the strokes are something like that?Anybody?
maybe it's cause I'm so used to playing with the thumb index grip, but this feels really weird. It makes it harder to do double strokes...anyone have any advice? Did it take you guys long to get use to it?
@Dubz229 Watch Jojo's lesson on single strokes. This lesson is incomplete because what comes next is control over the rebound. There's a video of Jojo teaching this exact same rebound technique and then how to control it.
@RedEHaze i think traditional is better for marching band. using the match grip puts your wrist in an awkward downward bend.this can also contribute to joint problems. go with traditional for this. it'll feel more natural too"D
one thing that is not clear to me (and also not after having watched tens of other grip videos) is whether or not it is okay for the stick to rotate: with every single hit i do, the stick always rotates a bit counter clockwise, so over the course of tens of hits, the stick can do full rotations, and because of that it slides away slowly. If I try to prevent this, I need to squeeze so hard with my thumb that I think something is wrong.
@Dieterbe this happens to me too! the only thing i do is just in those milli-seconds between back beats ghost notes ..whatever just re adjust the position again so you have the perfect balance point again

It has helped me to achieve the technique I have today a BIG deal!!!. Thanks Dave! I'm eternally thankful for what you did to my playing in my earlier years! A great teacher (and obviously a hell of a drummer) with great, clear didactics.
Theres is a great deal of misunderstood empty space between "liking" and "not liking" something. Those 18 individuals disagreeing with the obvivous value of this (possibly flawed but still excellent) instructional video are a mistery to me for that matter. You may not find it to be perfect but, as a drummer, theres no way anyone with some reasoning thinking could ever "dislike" this video. Its NOT perfect but its very, very helpful nonetheless.
people just dont know that guy is one of the best in the world if not the best ! he can play any note of anyone in such a smooth style! . those dislikes are certainly people who already knew what weckl is explaining and they think it's wack to talk about this. But for a beginner who don't take lessons and is certainly repeating wrong patherns, that video is gold. The grip is the most imortant thing, if you don't start the good way you will never improve yourself.
@SouthSho450 This lesson is not so much teaching you the right way, its more like teaching you a different way. There really is no right way to play the drums, you learn through what fits best for you. And it doesn't matter if your a professional or a novice drummer, this video was made for drummers in all. There are many different styles for stick gripping and I doubt that any one drummer knows them all no matter how much experience they have.
yeah i know, but for what i've been taught there are not that many if you don't wanna catch the syndrom of i don't know what in the wrist (''tunnel carpien'' in french). a lot of Metal drummers are developing this cause they play way too much stiffed. the key is to be relaxed. the grip he's showing is pretty much a comfortable way to get good rebound.
but the finger control type of grip with the thumbs facing up really doesn't suit me. i get better finger control and rebound and comfort with my thumbs on the side. the finger control grip is a real good way to get that syndrom cause the wrist really aint built to work that way...
This is what we learn in school. I'm a music student in sweden. I've been practicing this technique for about half a year now... And really practicing. It started to pay off the first week and I'm still learning. But I've still got about 60 months to go before I will start to feel really comfortable with this. But it is soooo totally going to be worth it.
by flipping the stick back i am kinda sliding a bit up, i really dont know where to work with my finger pressure... at 3:15 , do i have to wrap my middle finger around the stick a bit? or is the stick hold by pressing the thumb and middle finger against it?
@Diekenzakk Hard to describe via text but it's kinda like the feeling of, if you place you hand flat on a table then, like you're waiting impatiently and tapping you fingers from your pinky, ring, middle, and index finger... like rolling/tapping in that order. Imagine that, stick in hand, while going down towards the drum... pinky starts, and by the time you're back up, your index finger balances it out. Very similar feeling to tapping those same fingers on a table.
Hi, I'm looking to get some great drum lessons dvd, or maybe a few. This really caught my eye. I'm a beginner/intermediate and I really want to get a great technique. What do you guys preffer? Is there any other dvd's with dave weckl than this?
wow...i saw another video of Dave showing the Moeller technique...but, this VIDEO is AWESOME... seems to be a good primer to develop the moeller stroke.
@gdrummer1234 yo i agree with wat ur saying a little but i think its how the person is comfortable holdin the stick, because both ways that he showed i personally feel comfortable with them....its how ever i feel at the time depends on how i hold the stick and it depends on the type of music...u feel me
I LOVE that Weckyl says what he says here... I learned drums on my own, and naturally came to this exact style. Only difference is I use it in both hands. People have been telling me I'm 'wrong' for the last 5 years.
Saw Weckyl live with Bromberg and Chuck Leob. He was absurd to watch.
@MegaLunaman yeah, sorry about sleeping with your mother, but she did give me a lot of money and I felt kind of bad for her after she showed me a picture of you... jesus.
too all drummers that play match and wonders what about the left hand....its the same as the right, the goal is simply being able to have the left hand as close to the right hands technics as possible.
The way he teaches to grip the stick is very old, and I still see all my favorite drummers using it. However, I'm going to have to disagree with holding the stick this way. It makes more sense to me, and many others when properly explained, to make the fulcrum point between your thumb and BEHIND the middle knuckle of your INDEX finger. Why? This enables you to use the finger we all use most, and it adds an extra (and important) finger to control the stick.
There is no 100% correct way simply because hand sizes differ. The key point that makes this work correctly is that the 'throw' comes from about the middle of the pinky, it only graces @ a hi speed. While fast, he never has the weight of the throw on-top of the stick by the time it hits; this happens when you play through the drum a little, it doesn't happen when you play onto the head as it "chokes".
Develop both as they work together and better for different sounds.
This kind of information is the absolute foundation for achieving amazing hand skills. I found a teacher over 15 years ago that new this stuff and coached me thru it, after having played and seen other teachers over 10 years, this took the hand cuffs off my playing. As in depth as Dave gets, you can really only get a sense of what he's conveying, a good drum teacher that has this knowledge and skill that can be there one on one is really best. Knowledge is power, skill is the application of it.
Well... if you use match grip (and of course, any drummer mostly use match grip) it's just the same.
If you want to see traditional grip technique, I suggest you going back 1989 with his Snare video. The finger control exercises is really effective for me.
he doesn't seem to confident when explaining technique or anything else for that matter. this video is a lot of rambling about nothing. its very disorganized and is not very well put together. jojo mayer's "secret weapons for the modern drummer" is an excellent example of what a video on technique should be..but I do love daves playing!! just don't quit your day job dave.lol
I've just been reading what everyone is saying. I think you should all look at jim Chapin's clips on here and one more clue hold from the back of the hand. Dave's moller is really really sloppy!!!!
I watched this and Jo-Jo Meyer and still can't figure out if the thumb is in constant contact with the stick throughout the rebound or not, on the Meyer DVD close up it appears to come off the stick.
This video is very good. I was watching JoJo Meyer and it looked like his index finger was really dangling and he was gripping with the back 3 just like Dave is saying. I have been using my index finder too much
I think in general when it comes to technique, everyone has their own way or style unless you are in like drum corp or something where everything is supposed to be real right and controlled. He made alot of sense when he was talking about "open" sound by letting things vibrate by holding them loosley.
I don't really agree that the thumb-first finger grip makes it stiff, and that I have to pull the stick back up by myself. But I do agree that the other grip is more relaxed and it feels really good. I use that too, and I realized that when I first saw this video. Great stuff!
I agree with what you don't agree with. I think he's overstating his case. I think that his previous videos about hand technique didn't look quite like that....
My grip has changed in recent years towards gripping with the first and second fingers, which turns out to be a lot like the triangle concept he's talking about. I think it makes it easier to grip the stick with the soft center parts of the figers & thumb while also allowing for a more comfortable hand position...
Finger control seems more difficult with this grip with the loss of the middle finger since it's now the fulcrum. Perhaps I need more practice to get used to it?
If you don't keep your pinky and ring fingers on the stick, then you're going to have less control than somebody who DOES keep them there. Watch Jojo Mayer's video clips from his "Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer" DVD. He explains it better than I can with a 500 character limit.
When I watch my right hand play, my pinky and ring fingers are utilized quite a bit. So, if I do this with my left (matched grip, of course), I have increased control and precision, and everything feels easier.
Keep in mind guys, low-tuned toms, floor toms DO NOT create a rebound, so you have to develop up-stroke strength. I'm very surprised at how few teachers/players address this.
This is why it's beneficial to both study this type of technique, as well as practicing with pillows or something that has no rebound. It's a balance.
That is not entirely true. A floor-tom can create one rebound so to speak. It can give you enough to utilize the rebound for doubles if you use the technique dave weckl uses. However, you are right in that it is necessary to develop that up stroke strength as well. It is a balance, and you have to reach a point where your hands react to any situation given to them by themselves.
talk about a humble guy, realizing his technique wasn't as efficient OR beneficial as the moeller technique and starting back from square one. great musician, great human being.
you can get great sounding doubles out of just controlled bounce. In many situations, most drummers cant do pushpull doubles quick enough, no matter who u r.
im sure all these things depend on yourself. your physics, etc...so i dont think that there is something to call "wrong" right out of the way, but some things maybe "prevent" you from doing other things.
e.g. try to play your hihat heel-up. and then open it while hitting it...you know, it's easy to do that on heel-down, but on heel-up, it needs quite some practise to do that for a long time...but it is NOT impossible...
so, in my opinion, there is no wrong way to do it, but maybe, theres a way that later on will help you to prevent mistakes or something...
I have been using this technique for many years, I use it a little differently though. Checkout my vids, it's all about letting your grip, you're stick, you're body and your whole kit breath all on a even plane.
Thanks for posting! I play matched all the time, but experiment with traditional grip. Problem for me is - the stick slides around in my hand, like it is too heavy for me to hold it that way. What am I doing wrong? I am able to play traditional while using brushes but not sticks.
If it weren't for what I learned from this DVD, I would still be extremely frustrated with my drumming. One thing I'll say that he should have said was that it's important to note that it sorta feels like your index finger is not really being used anymore, but yet it is. You're just not pinching the stick anymore between the thumb and index (or "forefinger").
I have been following his career since the mid 80's. His was great then, and continues to amaze me even now. I was even lucky enough to meet him at the Blue Note in New York City last year while he was playing with Chic Corea. Too bad I was speachless. His Band, The Dave Weckl Band, is great too! He and his band have several CD'a out there. Listen to the live CD titled "Live and Unplugged". A must buy.
sin duda una buena técnica te dá las herramientas para una buena interpretación ''técnica'', sin ambargo tanto comentario que escucho obre técnica , derrepente se olvidan de lo mas importante... la música.
ive been playing for 9 years and was never aware of alternative grip techniques whilst in match grip. Am going to try this out now, thanks for posting!
If you want proof of just how relevent this shit is, then check out vids of the dave weckl band, I guarantee at least five minutes of uncontrollable, side-splitting laughter.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
holy shit...... JUST PLAY THE FUCKING DRUMS FOR FUCK SAKE!!!!!!!!!!! What did John Bonham do? He got the biggest fucking sticks he could find and beat the fuck out of the kit. He'd shit all over these benders.
miren tiene una tecnica cabrona la verdad..pero pienso que en eso de la tecnica steve smith es un poco mejor que weckl..para mi..no creen¡¡¡aunque mi baterista favorito es weckl...¡¡¡
I think most drummers who play long enough probably figure this out eventually. I think it's simply much more natural to hold the stick that way and it takes so much less energy to play. I never even thought about it, honestly, it's just how I played for years and years.
I've been playing mostly self taught for over 12 years and up to this point only known or been shown the first way of holding the sticks. This method might be the next level of my playing and he explains it so simply I'm shocked I haven't heard or thought of this sooner.
i kinda figured this out on my own... its in my opinion te best way to play american match... fore finger grip is only really usefull in french match...
i think weckl shoudl have gone into the whole old school grip with the ring and palm fulcrum... its usefull too for less finesse playing especially combined with moeller
I use the middle finger as my fulcrum in marching and drumset. in marching, I get a more legato stroke(little moeller though), and using more backfinger and arm...causing the stroke to go through the head, rather than into the head. It works pretty much the same in drumset too:]
Jojo Mayer teaches this exact same technique and neither Dave nor Jojo are sloppy. This is just the very VERY basic of a single stroke. The thing that comes next is probably control over that rebound.

Knowledge is power, skill is the application of it.

Wow, That was deep. Just to think that I almost didn't read your comment because it seemed to long.

how bout the other stick.....
aureola2 2 years ago
Well... if you use match grip (and of course, any drummer mostly use match grip) it's just the same.
If you want to see traditional grip technique, I suggest you going back 1989 with his Snare video. The finger control exercises is really effective for me.
DruMmMeuR 2 years ago
It took me a long time to figure out this grip. I just saw this video today and wish I saw it years ago.
I learned mostly from books and always held the stick the wrong way.
J6Studios 2 years ago
he doesn't seem to confident when explaining technique or anything else for that matter. this video is a lot of rambling about nothing. its very disorganized and is not very well put together. jojo mayer's "secret weapons for the modern drummer" is an excellent example of what a video on technique should be..but I do love daves playing!! just don't quit your day job dave.lol
piperpilot26 3 years ago
I've just been reading what everyone is saying. I think you should all look at jim Chapin's clips on here and one more clue hold from the back of the hand. Dave's moller is really really sloppy!!!!
gregs300 3 years ago
I watched this and Jo-Jo Meyer and still can't figure out if the thumb is in constant contact with the stick throughout the rebound or not, on the Meyer DVD close up it appears to come off the stick.
alzico 3 years ago
Right hand or left hand?
cpdrumming 3 years ago
This video is very good. I was watching JoJo Meyer and it looked like his index finger was really dangling and he was gripping with the back 3 just like Dave is saying. I have been using my index finder too much
vulture711 3 years ago
I think in general when it comes to technique, everyone has their own way or style unless you are in like drum corp or something where everything is supposed to be real right and controlled. He made alot of sense when he was talking about "open" sound by letting things vibrate by holding them loosley.

I don't really agree that the thumb-first finger grip makes it stiff, and that I have to pull the stick back up by myself. But I do agree that the other grip is more relaxed and it feels really good. I use that too, and I realized that when I first saw this video. Great stuff!
trumbaron 3 years ago
I agree with what you don't agree with. I think he's overstating his case. I think that his previous videos about hand technique didn't look quite like that....
My grip has changed in recent years towards gripping with the first and second fingers, which turns out to be a lot like the triangle concept he's talking about. I think it makes it easier to grip the stick with the soft center parts of the figers & thumb while also allowing for a more comfortable hand position...
homerinchinatown2 3 years ago
Finger control seems more difficult with this grip with the loss of the middle finger since it's now the fulcrum. Perhaps I need more practice to get used to it?
Gretsche87 3 years ago
a very basic thing, but this is the most important thing to do.
Rokoklinting 3 years ago 2
... how can he expect a half decent amount of bounce if he has his ring and pinky choking the thing
lonestarinfinate 3 years ago

DarthKazi 3 years ago 2
That is not entirely true. A floor-tom can create one rebound so to speak. It can give you enough to utilize the rebound for doubles if you use the technique dave weckl uses. However, you are right in that it is necessary to develop that up stroke strength as well. It is a balance, and you have to reach a point where your hands react to any situation given to them by themselves.

talk about a humble guy, realizing his technique wasn't as efficient OR beneficial as the moeller technique and starting back from square one. great musician, great human being.

I pinch the stick between my thumb and forefinger to get more controlled closed double-stroke rolls, is that wrong?
~~
SamoftheDrums 4 years ago
You should be push-pulling doubles not bouncing. It's fine for buzz rolls but not doubles.
HypergridIntrusion 4 years ago
you can get great sounding doubles out of just controlled bounce. In many situations, most drummers cant do pushpull doubles quick enough, no matter who u r.
OneRiddum 3 years ago
try doing double strokes really slow but accent the second note.
worked for me.
and dont use the grip ure using now.
itll work trust me.

sharan150 3 years ago
I do try not to rely on pinching at all, but it's so much easier!
~~
SamoftheDrums 3 years ago
im sure all these things depend on yourself. your physics, etc...so i dont think that there is something to call "wrong" right out of the way, but some things maybe "prevent" you from doing other things.
Doiza 3 years ago
e.g. try to play your hihat heel-up. and then open it while hitting it...you know, it's easy to do that on heel-down, but on heel-up, it needs quite some practise to do that for a long time...but it is NOT impossible...
so, in my opinion, there is no wrong way to do it, but maybe, theres a way that later on will help you to prevent mistakes or something...
Doiza 3 years ago
I have been using this technique for many years, I use it a little differently though. Checkout my vids, it's all about letting your grip, you're stick, you're body and your whole kit breath all on a even plane.
mapexlb 4 years ago
Thanks for posting! I play matched all the time, but experiment with traditional grip. Problem for me is - the stick slides around in my hand, like it is too heavy for me to hold it that way. What am I doing wrong? I am able to play traditional while using brushes but not sticks.

BitigoBlack 4 years ago 4
If it weren't for what I learned from this DVD, I would still be extremely frustrated with my drumming. One thing I'll say that he should have said was that it's important to note that it sorta feels like your index finger is not really being used anymore, but yet it is. You're just not pinching the stick anymore between the thumb and index (or "forefinger").

Dave is a "Master" Drummer.
A must buy.

I think most drummers who play long enough probably figure this out eventually. I think it's simply much more natural to hold the stick that way and it takes so much less energy to play. I never even thought about it, honestly, it's just how I played for years and years.
bluechao 4 years ago 3
I've been playing mostly self taught for over 12 years and up to this point only known or been shown the first way of holding the sticks. This method might be the next level of my playing and he explains it so simply I'm shocked I haven't heard or thought of this sooner.

i kinda figured this out on my own... its in my opinion te best way to play american match... fore finger grip is only really usefull in french match...
i think weckl shoudl have gone into the whole old school grip with the ring and palm fulcrum... its usefull too for less finesse playing especially combined with moeller
littlephoenix1115 4 years ago
I use the middle finger as my fulcrum in marching and drumset. in marching, I get a more legato stroke(little moeller though), and using more backfinger and arm...causing the stroke to go through the head, rather than into the head. It works pretty much the same in drumset too:]
