  • dude the minutemen didn't happen post punk, they were punks! also, sounds great!

  • People talk about Flea's playing a lot, but Mike Watt came before Flea and for me is the higher level artist. I can compare it to Andy Warhol doing a lot of flashy, manipulative stuff and getting a lot of people to talk about him, but Marcel Duchamp (arguably the most important artist of the 20th century) is only talked about by those who KNOW. Mike Watt is a genius. Thanks for putting this up. GREAT playing man!

  • Did you learn that by ear?

  • Is D. Boone's guitar in standard tuning and where can I find the complete tab for the guitar and bass???

Ps sweet job on the bass!

  • mandou bem cara !

    bomzao!

  • RI.P. Zodiak. Mike Watt would have been proud.

  • RIP

  • i really like the way you played this but i miss the Db D and high A in the break down part.. Know what i mean? Still rockin it out for sure tho

  • damn you got the rickenbacker you rich bastard. anyways good cover

  • do you know how to play "relating dudes to jazz" or "under the influence of meat puppets"?, you got minutemen stuff down perfect btw

  • Dude, for real. You look blissed out!

  • Excellent! You've got style, my man.

  • Very cool. One of my favorites by the Minutemen.

  • probably my favorite video of youtube. i love playing minutemen <3

  • if anyone was ever wondering why RHCP dedicated bloodsugarsexmagik to Mike Watt then this is the ultimate proof.

The first, the original and the one and only punk-funk inventor, Mr Watt Himself!

And you, Sir, your vids are awe-some!

  • good job man!!! from a hugh mike watt fan.

  • Thats just incredible. So who, where and when are you playing out. I'd pay to see this for sure...

  • Wow. You're amazing and the fact you learned this by ear is incredible!

  • thats so tight man great playing

  • Great!!!!

  • Nailed it on the Ric. RIP D Boon.

  • I discovered Minuteman a few days ago and hate myself for not hearing of them years ago. LOVE THEM.

Good job on the bass...it's perfect.

  • amazing skill, awesome taste

  • "I work my way backwards using cynicism." D.Boone could write.

  • one of my favorite song of Minutemen!

    awesome!

you're play bass with a great style!!!

  • i love how you're playing soooo fast, your hands blur...

  • One day...

I hope to be a good bassist as you.

Seriously man, that was incredible. I was gonna ask you for a tab, but it'd be way over my amateur head. Mad props!

  • you probably have no idea about it, but you are God :|. damn that slapping was so cool

  • Fantastic job man, The minutemen had some great bass lines, same with Gang Of Four

  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is a great version of the bassline

I love the sound from the Rick too -- not the most obvious slapping instrument!

You should try some of the Firehose stuff as well - there's some good lines

  • There are some great lines in Firehose. Do you know what stops me? My "From Ohio" CD was stolen from me years ago and I ahve not found a replacement. I just cannot do Firehose without playing a trilogy of the first three songs off of that album. It just seems fitting.

  • try amazon they should have it for pretty cheap. they got everything lol

  • RIP D

i fucking love minutemen and mike watt is a badass

  • does anyone know the chord that D boone is playing?

  • Love the song - you do a great job. Though the reason why the song is every cooler is that he doesn't slap in the song! That's the best part - NO SLAP! Which really shows just how amazing Watt is - he plays really hard and that mixed with his "tone" creates a very unique sound. But no slap.

  • what a class tune, this is the first time i have heard of these guys. def going to check out some more of there stuff. great playing by the way

  • Thanks. And this is exactly why I put these vids up......the Minutemen were definitely underated, and Mike Watt is a must-have for a bass player. If I can get them a bit more exposure from my cheezy videos, I am more than happy to.

  • well done, man.

this is one of my minutemen faves.

definitely one of the most underrated bands on the planet.

  • you should post the guitar bit from this song as well. it's almost a shame minutemen songs have such shit recording quality, stops you from noticing how musically impressive they actually are.

oh, and i think i speak for a lot of people when i say, post a tab somewhere!

  • pro status

  • i can't understand what you are doing, you are too fast! Are you using double thumb for the main riff? Please make a tab for this, it is a great rendition (better then the original)!

  • Great job! I've turned this song on to people who don't know anything about underground music, and they absolutely love it. One of the best songs ever written.

  • you've got your mutes down pat, but it sounds like you're playing riffs as you get to them in the song--basically what that results in is playing out of the pocket. especially watch those rising octaves and the return. the key is to practice the mixture of techniques out of context, so you can perform each cohesively. great playing, great tone, great song, just my two cents. oh, and I think you were wondering--I'm pretty sure watt was using his P&J Yamaha DI to the board on Double Nickels.

  • gotta love the Ric

    what is your favorite bass?

  • i dont remember how i came across the minutemen but after reading about them and listening to mike watt's basslines i was hooked good vid man

  • Easily my favorite Minutemen song. GREAT VIDEO!

  • Thank you. I always appreciate any other Minutemen fans out there. We are a fairly rare breed, at least in my experience.

  • WAAYYYYYY COOL!!

I didn't discover the Minutemen until last year...i avoided punk back in the day because I thought it was just crappy noise and anger (Zep, Rush, Nugent, Zappa, were my thing). But of course, The Minutemen were just three VERY talented musicians playing the punk scene.

  • I came about it the same way....total musical snob, and then a Primus-like project I was doing called "Mojo Bobfoot" was born. We obviously missed the mark because people were telling us we sounded like the Minutemen. I never heard of them, but checked it out, and damn if they weren't right, but the Minutemen were way cooler, of course. I have been a huge Mike Watt fan ever since.

  • this is probably one of your best.

  • I can agree with you. I really do like playing Mike Watt's stuff. Speaks to me...and his hard-hitting attack is so like my own that I feel far more "in tune" with the music.

  • Very nice indeed, you have a real feel for the song.

The first time I saw the minutemen, they totally blew my mind, such a tight 3 piece. I just kept looking back and forth, they were working so hard. What a great band !

Your bass playing brings it all back, thanks.

  • Thank you. If you have seen 'em live, I am tremendously jealous. I didn't discover them until 1991 when I was told I sounded like him. They were wrong, Mike was way better, but it was definitely what I wanted to sound like!

  • DAMN!

  • Your fingers a soooo quit that my eyey can not follow o___O wow!

  • Much love for this band, this song, and you. I love all the shit you do man, great job. You can check out my version of Nothing Indeed if you feel like it.

  • Hey, man. I appreciate this for two reasons: a) you're a damn good bass player, and pretty much nail it, and b) you chose not to play along to something totally corny. Few will apprecate it, but those who do REALLY DO.

  • Thanks. The Minutemen are one of those bands that if you are one of the few who are aware, you are one of the few who love them. I love cultish bands like that.

  • some questions wonderful man!...i'm italian...excuse for my poor english...1)4001?or 4003?

2)your right hand tecnique...how do you use your finger?three or 2 fingers ?i admire your style and i like it too much.

  • I'm sorry...I thought I had responded to this comment before but apparently youtube ate it. To answer your questions, I play a 4001 from 1974 and I play with three fingers, but I usually use two at a time, alternating between the 1st and 3rd and the 1st and second. That way I always have a fresh finger ready (except the index which is always going). I sometimes use the 2nd and third finger, but only for doublets.

  • Damn....nice! Until you got to the bridge where there was a little bit of improvising, I thought it WAS the original track. Pretty flawless.

  • damn!

  • Could you throw a tab of this up somewhere so that others could try to approach the greatness?

  • I would have to learn how to read them/write them first. It's one of the Achilles heels of being an ear player.

  • It would be great if you did, I wouldn't know where to start...

  • Wow! The bass from the Minutemen is godly. You nailed it.

  • one word: NIIIICE!

  • Do Shit from and Old Notebook and Vietnam!

  • Tomorrow I will be doing Shit From an Old Notebook along with a couple of others. What a coincidence that you ask me today!

  • I'm not a big fan of slapping but this is a nice take on Watt's bassline.

  • holy shit...another job well done, man

  • AMAZING mike watt is my bass hero.

  • I should also state that Double Nickels On The Dime is probably my favorite album ever.

  • YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEESSS!!!! you NEED to do Vietnom from double nickles next man!!!!! thank you for this!!!

  • Thanks. And do not worry, as we speak, more Minutemen is in the works (and Vietnam is an awesome song, so it is on the list). The Minutemen do not get a lot of views, but it is still incredibly fun to play and well-worth a listen for those not familiar. My bass buddy nairbfry is also a Watt fan, so watch his channel for other Mike Watt.

  • Nice job man. I used to have a Rick just like yours. I've spent a lot of time figuring out Mike Watt's basslines.

  • I think the Rick captures his sound fairly well. I have no idea if he played one, though. Thanks for stopping by, and yes, I spent a lot of time learning my chops with "My First Bells".

  • I found My First Bells at a music store and I'd seen it there for about 2 years before and I visited again and grabbed it since it was still there...never seen it anywhere else ever before or since. The tape is fucked up now, but I got everything on vinyl anyway. I will be putting up a minutemen/firehose/watt video channel up here soon.

Kira used a Rickenbacker a lot with Black Flag and Dos...you have the Dos albums?

  • No sir, I do not.

  • You need 'em dude! Just Watt and Kira's basses with occasional singing = it's awesome.

  • I shall check them out. Thanks for the info.

  • nice job sir, you ripped that well even added in some nice things. i played the d boon role in a couple minutemen/black flag tribute shows we did out here in worcester,ma. my brother portrayed watt. gotta keep the minutemen alive.

  • Then my hats off to you, sir, because keeping D. Boone's spirit alive is a noble effort, indeed. Thanks for stopping by...I knew there were some Minutemen fans out there.

  • Excellent job Rob, Cool song off of an excellent album. My old band used to cover them and firehose back in the day. Oh, am I old? 5/5

  • Not at all...if you know the Minutemen, you are just the right age. :)

  • Yeah! Rob, that was way too cool. Mike Watt is definitely under appreciated. You have the greatest taste in bass (say that 10 times fast).

  • Mike Watt is a bass God. Youtube finally allowed me to actually SEE him play, and I was not disappointed. George is awesome, too....that hair.

  • Like robass5, I've never heard them before, pretty cool, I must say, and shall check more of them out!

    Stealing the T-Shirt. XD

  • Really? That would be the coolest thing ever!! Wonder why I never got the nerve to write any of my bass idols?

  • Awsome Rob, I love it!!! I am so stoked you decided to do some minutemen. I didn't think I could pull off most the songs off this ablum but I knew you were capable! Great job!

  • Thanks, Brian. I loves me some Mike Watt bassin'

  • never heard it before , gonna check em out , nice cover

  • I would have never heard of them before, either, but a friend of mine told me that my band sounded like them back in 1992. He loaned me a tape, and sure enough he was right, and I've ben a Mike Watt fan ever since.

  • Mr. Robass5, check out my Firehose video. That is Mike Watt also.
