  • I think the II has more gain on tap, more gain is not always better. if the amp has a good tone there's no reason to distort it. Trying dialing back t he gain a notch or two on the II and you may like your tone a bit more

  • @YH55 perceptually id disagree with the II having more gain, in in terms of circuitry too it actually does technically have less gain. I appreciate the comment!

  • sounds like a bag of spanners mate. You may want to mic it up next time ? shame as sounds like you can play

  • @UKToneKing unfortunately currently don't own either of these amps :(

  • Which CAB did you use?

  • @fabiobegro it was a behringer lol

  • @snapascrew It wasn't sooo bad..! Not awesome, but cheap and nice.. :)

  • @fabiobegro I've got a mesa traditional cab now :D

  • would this head be awesome for genres ssuch as posthardcore hardcore metalcore? bands such as ofmachines ofmiceandmen thedevilwearsprada confide?

  • @joshcravesheartcore most definitely sir

  • hey can you tell me the settings on the 5150? thats the one i have, the origonal 5150

  • @mgdth502 I am interested if you still have it available. I sent you a message on your page so feel free to respond if it's still available. Thanks Mgdth.

  • I smiled at the "This Is Absolution" part. :-D

    KsE is the SHIT!

  • It sounds like the original has more feedback???

  • @pirateboy12 well it's a higher gain head so ya naturally it would feedback more with identical settings.

  • when you started playing the ghost inside i got stoked and stoped caring about the tone comparrison haha

  • 5150 rulez!!!!!! sound modern, agresive, in standard tune is great... in low tune is PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!

  • did you think i should buy used peavey 6505+ for 800$

  • @ILikeToPlayGuitarToo yes i do

  • Definitely has more gain (5150 II)

  • @brmoore18 the 5150 II actually physically in the amps inside has less gain than the 5150. no debate, it's fact. not by much but the 5150 is "higher gain". not to say the 5150 II isn't a better amp. that's up to you :)

  • If you dont like your amp, buy another one. if you dont like that, buy a whole shitload of pedals. if you dont like that, build your own fucking amp. at the end of the day, they aint making amps to fit your shoe size, if it aint perfect, make your own.

  • the 5150 II beats the 5150 for one reason and one reason only, it has alot more gain than the first and it has a crunch channel, thats it. Peavey wanted to make a heavier more mainstream eddie van halen amp and they did. I can't complain, my 5150 II has shown up alot of other amps and i've had no problems playing live. It just seems to me that the only difference between the 5150 and 5150 II (other than the gain difference) is the crunch channel. people make such a big deal.

  • @bigwhytes okay, no.

the original 5150 has the most gain. the II has less and now the III has even less. Consitentaly with each new version it has slightly less gain and gets brighter. I can tell you this from owning both as well as knowing people who take apart these amps for a living. the II by NO MEANS has more gain than the original sorry bro.

  • man wow thw amp is realy clipping that cam lol

  • what tuning are you playing in ?

  • if that's a EC-1000 that's a sweet guitar ! lol. I played one today. I'm getting a MH1000...same thing but with an Ibanez style body and a trem

  • did the 5150 come with the 3 button footswitch with the crunch button ?

  • Wow! Great sound.

    I like it.

  • the two amp have identical circuits, excepted for the clean channel, the 5150II / 6505+ have one more preamp tube, better cleans. But the distortion (lead channel) is the exactly the same. The sound difference is due to the tubes, even if you use the same brand each tube has sound different.

  • thumbs up for playing faith or forgivness in the beginning.

  • Faith or Forgiveness!

  • this is absolution!!! :D

  • the reason the II sounds better in this video is camera positioning, the 5150/6505 is by far the heavier amp

  • @xxc3lld4m4gexx "heavier" and "better" are two different things... not to mention there's no indefinite "better"

  • @snapascrew agreed...i never said better, just heavier...lol

  • @xxc3lld4m4gexx "the reason the II sounds better in this vid" - you hahaha look at your comment again :P

  • Woohoo killswitch!

  • woah! Half stack in the closet! never thought of that. thank you sir

  • The original (at least in this clip) sounds darker.

  • Both of these heads sound great at high volume levels and there is a slight tonal differance between the two if cranked around 7. It's not just because of an added channel the 2nd version is differant...

Specs show the first head uses 5 pre-amp with an effects loop, presence knob and high gain switch...The version2 uses 6 pre-amp tubes and a differant routed effects loop (not betewwn the power and pre-amp tubes) a presence knob with two stage crunch and pain switchs...play EVH licks & show us

  • @JBL8863 7 on the post gain? and why would I play van halen licks.. just cuz it's his amp? no it's my amp.

  • thinkin...the original is/should sound better...its original tone was based upon evh's hotrodded marshall....the 5150 II was just to add another "cleaner" channel...as with the Fender 5150 III...one clean, one crunch, and one over the top lead...

But all said and done ?...they're all going to sound VERY similiar!!

  • Just a question. You said the mids were more present on the 5150. Couldn't you adjust your EQ on the 5150II to match the tone of the 5150? Just turn up the mids a bit? Just wondering.

  • Word up for The Ghost Inside!

  • Lol at people saying that everything under C loses tone. I have an original 5150, Schecter C7, a Boss Noise Suppressor and I play in Drop G# tuning. Yeh thats right.

    Learn to brutal.

Also, to the dude who made this video, if you havnt got one, I'd invest in a Boss NS2 Noise Suppressor. Will help heaps :)

Both amps are beast. Original wins though I think.

  • @deathmetalisbetter Drop g# holy fuck o.o

  • @metalrulez907 Yeh dude. Its heavy as fuck. And my sound is one of the clearest.

Dont need the gain on 11 to sound good ;)

I run mine on 5.5 and its great.

  • @deathmetalisbetter i've used that, and the isp decimator g string, and the decimator doesn't color the tone like the boss does, and it opens INSTANTLY, unlike the boss.

  • @mosquitohaterAK Yeh i have both, my ISP was playing up though, so i had to revert back to Boss. I prefer the ISP, cos in the genre of music i play there's a lot of choppy sections, and the Decimator really compliments that, but for the price i paid, its not being very reliable lol.

  • @deathmetalisbetter dude, that sucks.. i love mine to death. what exactly is it doing, though?

  • Am I the only one who think this megaluisdeth dude should change his name to megadouchesgetalife?

  • what do you have all the knobs set to if you dont mind me asking on the old 5150?

  • The tones change drastically as the other guy moves the camera around, that's your main difference.

  • Why can't anyone play in standard tuning?

  • @CyValkarion I live in Canada, we have rules and regulations in this country.

  • @snapascrew Best response ever.

  • @snapascrew You're funny.

  • @snapascrew you live in canada so you must be playing in A, haha yes cheesey but had to be said, no really good vid man. haha and good comeback to the other guy.

  • @bianchiniman I don't get it.

  • @bianchiniman OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • @snapascrew Haha, too funny!

  • @CyValkarion Cause it's modern....or something.

  • @megaluisdeth I say play in standard like a real guitarist. -.-

  • @CyValkarion I guess but most Modern/Metalcore music are tuned down. I prefer to play in E flat or E.

  • @megaluisdeth Well I don't have anything against drop tuning, it's just I think guitars were made to stay in standard, E flat, or drop D. I play in low drop tunings all the time. Hell, I play in drop A on my Strat with 9's. I always end up back in standard though. I just think it's more tasteful in standard. You can still play heavy stuff in standard. Most people seem to think otherwise.

  • @CyValkarion Yea I think playing anything under C standard starts losing tone. Yea but I think a amp review should be in E standard since most people have their guitars tuned to that. Yea but it's just metalcore/Modern People don't have enough skill like Dave Mustaine to make heavy stuff on E standard.

  • @megaluisdeth most people who have 5150's don't play in standard tuning to be honest. and "heavy" is subjective. I don't think anything from Dave Mustaine is heavy at all.

  • @snapascrew Cause you're a mother fucking pussy, you have a rotten ear.

  • @megaluisdeth

I'm with snapascrew on this one... Megadeth is a pretty okay band, I like certain songs a lot, but they aren't particulary heavy in my opinion.

  • @megaluisdeth Actually contrary to your fan boy rage speeking (don't get bummed out im a fanboy of a few bands too) I have a great ear and have a part time job sound engineering and am goin to school for it, I value your opinion tho! (not really... Get the fuck off my page)

  • @megaluisdeth Not true at all. You just need thicker strings. I normally use 10-42 and tune to D standard/drop C, but I got some a couple sets of 13-56 and am in Bb standard. Once you get past that, though, you'll want an extended scale length. Ion Dissonance tunes to D# standard...just saying.

  • @megaluisdeth one word. GOJIRA!!

  • @CyValkarion i play in standard for 7 strings ::)

  • @dnkzz That's fine. I have absolutely nothing against ERG's. In fact I have more respect for ERG players because not only is it more theory to worry about, but you're always gettin flak from idiots who hate on ERG's for no reason.

  • the 2 sounds a bit more "mesa rec ish"

  • I think sick tone gives more confidence to the player.

These tones are amazing for camera quality. I would love to have either the 5150 or the 5150 II; both are dirty amps.

PS, hope you're fans of TDWP and ABR, masters of these tones :P

  • another 1thousend

  • u play badass but how do u get 56,684 views?

  • @XxCLOWNxKINGxX peavey 5150 vs 5150 II is a very common topic....

  • what tunin u in

  • @JoeBerlinGuitar Drop C

  • @snapascrew

are they thick ass strings? it looks like a les paul scale neck so i imagine theyd need to be pretty large gauge

  • @JoeBerlinGuitar Forget what I used at the time. I currently still play in drop C and just use 11-48 ernie balls. bigger strings produce a sometimes nicer tone but I like to have a very powerful vibrato so i keep them a little thinner.

  • @snapascrew I use the same guage on my eclipse :)

  • u still didn't get better lol

  • I have a 5150 II head and a 5150 combo. I've heard the original 5150 heads and I like them all. However I think that the 5150 II is much cleaner. It doesn't have quite the gain as the original and the combo do. Either way these are bad ass amps!

  • I rather the 5150II.

  • mmm loved that 5150 II sound

  • Comment removed

  • 5150 rulezzz :) I have one too :)

  • Hello fellow Canadian.... what speakers are in that cab?

  • @Coonetta pieces of garbagee idk i use mesa cabs now

  • the 2 sounds more lika a mesa

  • very Im getting myself a 6505+ 112 combo tomorrow with a free MXR Wylde OD all for $550 brand new tommorow on black friday, happy thanksgivin from massachussetts and good video!!!

  • @78LilRedExpress440 good deal and happy thanksgiving to you (that caught me off guard because we had our thanks giving in Canada like a month or so back)

  • @snapascrew thanks have fun with those nice 5150's those arent cheap amps really lucky to have two of em

  • @78LilRedExpress440 at the time only the 5150 II was mine, now the dude filming owns it and I own his old original 5150. had a little trade! and now we're both much happier!

  • Bluddy strange outfit u got there. Green silk shorts, t-shirt . . and a beanie? WTF ARE YOU ON lol

  • @TheHungryShredder1 lol i can't even reply b/c there is no answer.

  • thumbs up for mr. potato head

  • great video, the sound is just right(I have heard this amp live several times)

for me the 5150v1 is better even on the video

  • haha the ghost inside riff

oh and invest in a noise suppressor son

    ISP Decimator 4 life NIGGER!

  • @AdamAffliction I've got an ISP.

  • Why spend all the money on that equipment if you just do rhythm?

  • @TheTK9787 I don't know how a comment like this can get me so furious but it has. Only 1 head was mine which I got a deal on, the cab was cheap and a piece of shit, and I play more then rhythm it's a fucking amp comparison not a shred off you stupid fucking retarded piece of shit.

  • @snapascrew Says the guy who only knows how to play power chords

  • @TheTK9787 says the guy who's got no videos of himself playing. ahahaha you fucknig pussy.

  • @TheTK9787 you FAIL. good equipment is essential to everyone.

  • @XxPatrickPradaxX what I got personally out of that was, "yes snapascrew sucks but everyones allowed to have good equipment" lolololol

  • @snapascrew hahaha!! totally not what I meant!! sorry bro!! You don't suck at all lol

  • @allanef Yeah thats what eddie does hes the one that told my teacher about it

  • The reason you think the II sounds better is because you dont have the right tubes. My guitar teacher said he go it original from evh but evh had jay jay tubes in it he said he started putting jay jay tubes in all his other amps he said it makes all the diffrence in the world

  • Can you post the settings used for the amps including resonance and presence?

  • @codecougar I can't remember and unless you have my guitar, the heads, and my same cab (which i hope you don't cuz the cab i was using was crap) it wont matter :)

  • true, just wondering. I just got a 6505+ and wondering how people set the pre and post gain and resonance and presence settings. thanks anyway.

  • @codecougar what cab you got and what speakers I should be of some help... with the 6505+ when I had it I remember liking the pre gain around 7 at most... probably 6 in a band situation.. presence i forget, resonence like 6-7 or so.... I like most of the settings at 6 to be honest :P besides post gain, that at 3.

  • I have an Earcandy Buzzbomb 2X12. I am currently running the pre gain at 7 and the post gain at 2 or whatever my ears can stand. resonance and presence both at 6. Low, Mid, High all at 5. So, sounds like I am close at least. Thanks!

  • first edition the best i had one. for life. 5150! real amp!

  • what will it take to make you sell one of them?

  • @1237272827483 I sold the 5150 II and only have the original 5150 now... I'm going to start saving for an axe fx once I finish saving for a TV. Once I get the axe fx and the matching powered cabinet I will sell the 5150 head... to my friend whom I promised it to for 650 Canadian dollars.

  • @snapascrew =-O we should trade ill give u my 52" plasma for the amp

  • @1237272827483 too big of a tv and i don't like plasmas plus man a 52" plasma is worth more then a 5150

  • @snapascrew lol got it on sale for $880 i would gladly trade it for a better amp i have a 75watt line 6 i hate it. but do you know were i can find one of these in the windsor area?

  • @1237272827483 a 5150? nah man

  • @snapascrew Which one would you say is the best when it comes to "Metal-core"?

  • @Chanocksanchez it's really personal pref man. the original is a bit more ballsy but also looser. my favorite happy medium of tightness and balls is teh original with an overdrive boost because where the II is already tighter it's not as pissed off sounding.

  • @1237272827483 Isn't 650 Canadian dollars worth about 8 american dollars? lol Good playing young brother. Right on your Killswitch Engage....

  • @slimmetalpickin the exchange rate fluctuates every minute of the day. 650 canadian dollars is currently 610 american dollars. ($10 dollars USA is $10.65 canadian)

  • how much will it take to make you sell one of them?

  • lawl His face is soooo serious looking

  • @Nandwar213 lol it was a strange feeling... I had a cold so i was a bit ticked... had two awesome amps so i was happy... playing them throguh a crappy cab so i was mad... and I was wearing a tuque hat! all at the same time LOL

  • @snapascrew Haha Two epic amps indeed, Im way to poor to play on either hah

  • @Nandwar213 I found a deal on teh 5150 II... and when I later bought the original off my friend who filmed this he gave it to me for 470... it needed a new pot, some gernral maintence (tubes) and that was it

  • @snapascrew Haha Nice, Still $500 is alot haha. I've been playing on El'cheapo Bass amps

  • Thanks! (: nice Video

  • Amp Settings Please (:

  • @ibruse I don't remember but my current settings for the 5150 (since I traded my 5150 II for it) are Pre 5.5 Low 6 Mid 5.5 high 5.8 or so res 6 pres 4

    hope that helps

  • sounds like a touch more upper mids and treble in the 2. I may be trading my bias modified 5150 or the bias modified II. I also have a rect-o-verb and a XXX head plus a 5150 combo.I like the combo better than the head. Better compression.

  • @diesect33 ya i've heard the combo is biased hotter.. but i hate the speakers... yuck

  • @snapascrew yeah i don't mind the speakers but, i prefer greenbacks or V30's. I have the bias point's at the same 36ma for all my amps though and the combo still just has a smoother sound and feel. i do more shred type stuff so that works for me. the 5150 heads are meaner but, the XXX are meaner still to me anyway. I hate the cosmetics of the XXX thou so i always mod that...stupid mudflap girl...GAY.

  • i think the 5150 sounds better in this. i had a 5150II.

  • What type of tubes do you have in the original 5150?

  • @silasmcleoud at the time, originals from 1992! just recently put shugaung 12ax7's in the preamp section (except for the phase inverter where I put a sovtek 12ax7 LPS) and TAD 6l6's

  • what's up with the Mr.Potato head?

  • @deadandmobile Alex Lifeson. lol

  • I was playing this amp at my cousins the other day, and it was saweeeet, it sounded so amazing right on bro

  • You need to a get a 6505 now... And the 6505+. :)

  • @TheSugarFreedom lol 5150 = 6505. 5150 II = 6505+

that's all there is to it. when eddie van halen left peavey he took the rights to the 5150 name but not the design. peavey kept that!

  • @snapascrew they alsostarted putting lower quality caps and resistors in the 6505 series and dropped the bias points which affect the tone. I've owned all of them and there is definitely a difference tonaly in the 5150's unfortunately. It's not something that can't be fixed. Yes they're the same circuit and layout but, changing the componants alters the tone. the 6505 series sounds more tinny and open while the 5150 series is more compressed and focused.

  • @snapascrew a good cap and resistor mod coupled with a bias lift gets them up to par though and if you can do it yourself it's only about a $20 job which is why alof of pros record with 5150's and used 6505's live. Other's still just do what i do and mod the few cheap caps and resistor and allow for burn in time. Otherwise though they're clones to a T

  • im stuck between this n the mesa dual recto. i like the recto better, however in australia its double the price :(

    can you answer for me:

which of the two 5150 vs 5150II has a more bassier and darker sound??

i know it sounds stupid but the 5150II looks cooler as it has more dials. more dials also equal more options :p

thanks in advance for a reply

  • @loplod1 the original is the darkest and fattest. the 5150 II is brighter and a little thinner. then the fender is the thinnest and brightest of them all (the 5150 III) so stick with the 5150 original

  • we will not die this wayyyyyy! ...which amp of these 2 sounds the best for killswitch then? (its hard to tell from a vid)

  • @NevvyC well KsE has been seen in previous years using the original 5150 and I don't ever recall them using 5150 II's and I currently have the original and sold the 5150 II (me and the dude in the video actually traded!) and agree that the original 5150 (when boosted) is your best cheap ticket to KsE tone.

  • @snapascrew not really cheap though is it! (for a 5150 mk1) unless you're from America or something?

  • @NevvyC Im from Canada and the 5150 set me back 470 dollars! (very cheap... cheaper then new valve king)

  • @snapascrew this is why people hate America (and now Canada...!) everything is so much cheaper over there! a 5150 in this country would set you back 600quid which is 964CAD!

  • @NevvyC used it would cost that much? man that sucks... gosh... somebody should start a business over here buying amps for people like you and shipping them to you so you don't have to pay quite as much!

  • much appreciated!

  • you made a good amp, sound like shit, what is wrong with u. Learn to play

  • @crate718 ahahaha I go to your page and I see all your recent comments are on 5150 videos saying the same thing "you're shit take lessons" and I see Jerry from FJA mods owning you... btw I love your videos man you're way better at playing the guitar than me... also this video was for sure a show case of my guitar playing and not the amp....(read the title of the video moron)

  • what cqb are you using?

  • @Mr5150II cab *

  • settings?

  • sounds like they both make a shit load of noise when you're not playing.

  • @MarilynMansonsVagina ya they both need suppressors. an ns2 will do for the 5150 II
