MK took a big dip after MK3 , which is why Midway went bankrupt , people stopped caring much about the franchise. During its time, it was controversial and new, people weren't so tolerant to blood and gore in gaming which was MK's specialty. Doesn't work today. Namco on the other hand constantly talks with the current tekken players and asks opinions on what they want to see in the next installment. Which is every new game looks improved. Lets hope MK9 will bring back some fans.
How come whenever there are two different games, there always has to be a fight about which is better? Personally, I think both are great games, but Mortal Kombat 1 was the first game I ever played. I played Tekken shortly after, and I played both of them for a good 4 hours each day. Does popularity, fighting styles, and tournaments really matter? How about you focus on the important thing. Both games are fun to play. That's the whole point of a video game.

Tekken is preferred by those who want more realism and thinking; it's fun AND difficult, while MK is, at least to a (really) longtime fan such as myself, usually just fun.

@Keyscool The last 5 Mortal Kombat games didn't offer much diversity in the way characters "played." Most characters fought the same in terms of gameplay and borrowed tons of moves & animations from each other, which is one of the main reasons why the last 5 MK games were failures. MK9 has to be good, or MK is as good as dead.

I'd say that in the long run it all comes down to individual taste.
MK is a fantasy genre fighting game whose cast consists of cyborgs, many millennia-old MILFs, spectres, elementals, ... hell, even of gods themselves. Another amusing feature of MK is that you can kill your opponent, in virtually infinite number of manners.
Tekken is preferred by those who want more realism and thinking; it's fun AND difficult, while MK is, at least to a (really) longtime fan such as myself, usually just fun.

Tekken's story is much much better
the characters are much more diverse not just 100 people wearing masks with different colors and 50 asian dudes
the moves are realistic yet fluid,fast and more fun whereas MK is slow and the movement is terrible
and after playing god of war,prototype etc...MK fatalities feels like its for kids,not hardcore enough :)

Most characters fought the same in terms of gameplay and borrowed tons of moves & animations from each other, which is one of the main reasons why the last 5 MK games were failures. MK9 has to be good, or MK is as good as dead.
