There is probably no stopping the spread of Asian carp into the Great Lakes so just get used to the idea & start planning your economy ahead as all things change eventually. I live on the Illinois River & have been able to take Bighead & Silver carp on a conventional rod & reel with bait. These monsters make great sport fish & there's a whole new business in teaching people to catch them for sport & food. I've been a fisherman for 50 years & am enjoying the best fishing of my life with them.

Only way to solve the problem is the literally get a bunch of guys to net the Calumet River and down on a frequent basis, releasing the good fish and disposing of the asian carp. To pay these workers off there could be a small plant that turns the fish into fertilizer for farmers or even could fillet them and sell to third world countries that will buy the meat.

These fish JUMP OUT OF THE WATER by themselves. Perhaps it might be possible to control this jumping to make them jump into a "fish catching barge", one with wheels so that when it is full it can just be dragged out of the water and dumped somewhere that needs fertilizer.

How about this:

Put the barge in the middle of the river and have 10 boats in a wide circle putting mild electricity into the water and forcing the fish towards the barge? It bet it could work.

These fish got here the same way the other aquatic invasive species were brought here... mostly by bilge dumping. The ships coming from overseas fill their brigs with water from their ports, bringing in fish, crustaceans, mussels, weeds, bacteria, etc. When they reach their port here in america (or somewhere in the rivers or lakes between entering freshwater and docking at their destination) they empty their holds. Everything floods into our waters. Some die, some flourish.

In order to get all those fish out of the river, we need a bunch of "robot boats" like the little Roomba robot thing that vacuums houses.

Just outfit these boats with a source of electricity and let them whiz around and soon enough they will be full of carp.

Perhaps they might be a good source of fertilizer? The Indians used fish to grow corn. Why not carp?

I actually tried a few pieces of fried big head carp. It was not very appealing. It had a grass-like taste. I can't answer for a carp belt or shoes. I know River Otters are making a come back in Illinois and have a voracious appetite for fish but I think the big head is too big for an otter to catch. If our aquatic systems were in better shape to begin with, disasters like the big head carp would be much less frequent.
