Good christians back then were supposed to be god fearing. The term "god fearing man" is used in a lot of litterature.

I read that this piece was written to test the organ's bellows. There are several passages in which there are huge chords requiring all the stops to be drawn (full organ). If the organ struggles, the bellows are not up to task, or the reservoir is too small.
