@ dman211 This is simply gorgeous playing here. Of course Mrs. Koblar is also a gorgeous woman but even without any video, this performance is still second to none. But yeah, you're quite right.....................................................
No one would think any less of you if you didn't have the music right in front of you. In the mean time I'm flabbergasted that you have it all memorized.
WOW. awesome. scarlatti usually bores me, but this performance really held my interest - i played it 4 times before writing my review....... ms. koblar is really a major talent.
Scarlatti meets Beethoven in a big, bold 19th century style Romantic interpretation. This is not a criticism, just an observation about this pianistic approach. A very assured, imaginative and musically polished performance.
I have the sheet music for thhis, but its confusing, can anyone help? by the way, Irena, you do anamazing performance, this sounds way better than harpsichord.
Not if played correctly. Obviously, the instrument these sonatas were composed for had no method of sustaining notes apart from touch. If I'm not mistaken, Pogorelich plays them pedal free. Even in this performance, pedal is used quite sparingly. In truth, as good as this sounds, it's probably quite a bit different from how it would have sounded originally. But who cares, this is awesome.
FASINANTEMENTE HERMOSO!! ... Y mucho mejor en piano ...no suelo gustar de obras para harpicordio en piano pero esta es una de las esepciones...MUY BIEN TOCADA!!
Nosferatu list? Smithsherman, please post your performance of this sonata that we might learn how it's really intended to be played..... What I particularly think is comment-worthy is her sensible use of rubato. Many harpsichord players on Youtube exhibit this weird rhythmic "bumping" for which I can find no historic reference. @reinpost The argument that you can't criticize unless you can better is so TIRED. People have a right to express their opinions. And I say this as someone who really likes this performance.
@greenunseen I think so, too. I meant to make a different argument, namely, that I some concrete illustration might make bombomchilom's remarks, which I do not understand at all, more comprehensible. I rarely find opinions interesting to read, but concrete information or illustration on which opinions are based are.
@greenunseen Don't apologise ... my wording was very sloppy. Let's continue this thread forever so we keep hearing this over and over ... the transparency at 0:30-0:35 for instance, or the repeated note flowing in at 0:47 ... aaaaah
Please tell me you are joking? Ok, it is perhaps played like Beethoven in places, but dont think it is helped by the position of the microphones. Her technique is fantastic and if you are pianists as you state, then you'd realise she is a brilliant pianist.. The repetitive notes are awesome. Bravo from me.
it confounds me how the "youtube musical pundits" can pick apart an absolutely perfect performance and find something to critique on. I have been playing and listening to piano for almost 18 years and don't have anything averse to say about this performance whatsoever. Great Post.
Her finger work is so definite. It is unusual for most pianists to play like this. And observe how her little finger curls up when she plays. Just goes to show that "right" technique is very subjective from pianist to pianist. Brava! to her. I wonder how she'd sound doing something gentle and mushy.
There are some good elements. I am not sure about the "arpeggio" chords at the beginning. Why not play them plain? Anyway, the repeated notes later are supposed to be trills, according to Scarlatti's indication. I don;t understand her decision to play them on a single note.. it sounds funny. There is potential, though.
So many pianists just race through Scarlatti and make it a mere technical/virtuoso piece. I appreciate she doesn't pull the tempo too much. Musicality is great and I love the attention she pays to the percussiveness and clean articulation. Brava!
From the first note, I knew- yes! (Andras Schiff is a favorite performer of Scarlatti, for me). You have a great way to convey the better sound for this piece, the clean "percussion".
I've respectfully listened to several Scarlatti renditions which sounded to me as pure exercise, just showing off undoubtely great technique but poor musicality -
Obviously I deeply appreciate this warmer and coloured playing, not just notes but music -

Irena - this is so good!!!!
You can make even a 'Stoneway' sing and become a 'musical instrument' and not only remain an 'advanced percussion device'....!
Hearing this from a harpsichord prof (!) - admitting such in public - is hopefully 'coming home' (!)
Your sense of form, articulation and dynamics paired in a well-timed phrase is very positive indeed - and I get really pleased when listening to you!
