War with Eritrea. Not mentioning hundreds of attacks on villages in the East Yemen. Saleh's regime is most dirty and insolent band of criminals which seized power to deplete natural resources for personal enrichment. Saddam supported Saleh during war against South Yemen. Iraqi pilots were bombing Aden.

The northern tribes have been in control of Yemen for most of its history. From the imams to the modern day so called "elected government". The northern part of the country is arid,and lacking in any natural resources. This same harsh environment has made northern people to be inherently more rugged and resilient. As a means of basic survival, they have to control other parts of Yemen. The problem is there is no sharing of anything with the rest of Yemenies Sucke'm dry and hange'm high.

@Nikateer Yemen has11 billion barrels oil reserves, 450000 cubic meters LNG. Only in 3 of 21 provinces Hadramout, Shabwa, Marib have been explored. Recently vast amounts of gold and nickel deposits were found in Hadramout. Only 1 province (Sana'a) relies solely on ground water and its population is growing at a rate 8% every year. Sana'a always gets heavy rain, they just never bother harnessing it. Even then, there are several desalination plants being constructed off the coast of Hodeida.

In politics there are no such things as permanent friends or permanent enemies. The Emir of Qatar isn't doing this because he is buddies with Ali Abdullah Saleh. He knows instability in Yemen will rapidly spread throughout Arabia and East Africa, ultimately affecting all the GCC nations. Yemen can't simply be ignored.

They were allies-Syria, Iraq, Yemen. Egypt could have been in this club, but Mubarak was concerned with own interests For years Kuwait sponsored public development projects in Yemen. On the day Saddam attacked Kuwait, Saleh made a speech praising Saddam's actions. After that gulf states expelled all Yemeni workers businesses

@officalzak Criminals don't feel guilt. They just take, by hook or by crook. Kuwaitis felt that they are helping their fellow Arabs. Most of the Yemenis were grateful for their support. But Saleh is a crook. There is big difference between governments and people in the Arab World. That's why there are all these revolutions. All opposition forces in Yemen had condemned Saddam's aggression against Kuwait, except Saleh's ruling party.
