nice! I'm reading a Frommer's book on Hawaii, and Banana Joe's is mentioned in it at possibly having Mangosteen. As a traveler to Thailand, and having eaten it out there, I can't wait till I can have it again!
tubebe: Unfortunately the US has some strict laws about the importing of mangosteen to the continental US. I hear it was hard enough to get the fruit to the islands.
What did it taste like? ...a mango?? You appeared to be going for another section, but not completely bowled over by it. I wonder because I just recently became aware of, but haven't yet tasted, nor seen, the "mangosteen"!:)
I can't remember exactly what it tasted like! (I kind of like not remembering... it helps maintain the mangosteen's mysterious "forbidden fruit" aura.) But it was nothing like a mango. I was surprised by the texture... it had segments almost like a clementine, but moister. The flavor was subtle. Definitely good, but not as extreme as I'd expected based on its "Queen of Fruits" status. It was different than any other fruit I've eaten.
Durian is much better

Mangosteen has no relation to magoes. The redness in the shell can leave a red stain.

It's like, creamy, citrusy, peachy and a seed with stringy stuff on it, you got to suck on it for 1 minutes. =D
