  • I was cynical about this fix. But I bought the components and a good heat gun. I would have bet against it, but credit goes to Eric. The Xbox fired right up and has been working for about 6 months with no issues. Eric... if we ever cross paths, I am buying.

  • it did not fucking work fml i did everything right and i have the same xbox as it

  • fair play

  • I did this to mine and it lasted about 5 months. Then I had to buy a new Xbox.

  • @Mvric Even when the x-clamp gets your system going again, it's often just a matter of time before it RROD's again. The RROD that is temporarily fixed with the mod and goes bad again will either need the solder reflowed(heated back to molten state) or completely reballed if beyond repair by reflow. Fortunately the 0,1,0,2 error shown here is only a minor solder failure and can usually be reflowed.

  • haha sux 2 b u!!! u have 2 repair ur xbox!!! ps3 is better!!!

  • @bulldogbb99 ps3 have rubbish internet long crap updates cost to much for a mic

  • Thanks just what I needed. ! :-)

  • your the shit man!

  • get a ps3

  • @avenger225hp YLOD idiot

  • Game over, haha :D

  • Too hard for me

  • I followed this video exactly about 2 weeks ago and my Xbox worked like a charm. However I got the RROD again. Is this just a tempoary fix? I took my 360 apart again and just removed the Arctic 5, which was still fresh, off the GPU only and heated it again. For now it works again. Should I expect to get the RROD again in the near future? Thanks for your help.

  • Nice job Eric! Worked for me! Take that Microsoft! By far the best video out there that isn't by some numbskull. Don't do the stupid towel thing...really people! And on some they say to overheat the XBOX instead of using the heat gun...WRONG! Listen to what Eric says about using the heat gun and what it does! I've been in the technology field for over 20 years and purposely overheating a circuit board is just pure rubbish!

  • WAIT I DID NOT EVEN USE THE SCREWS

  • OK SO LETS SAY I ADDED THE PASTE BUT DID NOT TIGHTEN UP THE SCREWS...AND IF I STILL GET THE RROD IS IT MANDATORY TO USE THE SCREWS??

  • this is so stuped and a wastmof my time......

  • @coolass73 Obviously English class was a waist of your time to.

  • okay so he fixed the so called red ring of death, but what he didnt do was fix the problem that caused the overheating from the start so this repair he did will not work for long, you have to fix the cooling, either change the connections on the fan from 5v to 12v and place a power control on it so you can change the speed of the fan better because the red ring is caused from that its not cooling good enough so it overheats and the chip gets loose from its place so to speak.. fix the cooling

  • @Karnalzion he may not have "fixed" the cause of the problem but he did return the cooling solution back to factory standards if not better. Cleaning off and replacing the thermal paste is sufficient. What you mentioned is better but you can't say that his fix won't work for long. At least this is from my experience fixing XBOXs myself.

  • ok i did everything, i even connected everything right but why does it still have the 3 red rings??? please eric help me !_!

  • @MegaSolEXE1 You might have the 3 red rings problem rather than rrod. I haven't seen much dif in identifying them so it could be easy to mix them up

  • just buy a ps3 its just... better

  • it works

  • SUBSCRIBE TO ME! I KNOW A WAY TO FIX XBOX 360 RED RING OF DEATH! PERMINANTLY, I ALSO HAVE A CRACK THAT CHANGES CONSOLE AND GAMERTAG ID, SO YOU CAN UNBAN ACCOUNT AND CONSOLE!

  • @H4CK37DUD3 The only reason you would need to unban and account if for being douchey and getting banned in the first place.

  • I am willing to say a xbox 360 is bulletproof after what I saw.

  • i fixed mine by just unplugging it and lettin it sit 4 a couple of mins and replug it and works like new

  • dude just remove the wire and it's done

  • Thanks eric, followed your vid and successfully fixed my box...i used the fan shroud to adjust the lg heat sinks height..when i installed the shroud i noticed the heat sink was to high so i just brought it down to be inline with the shroud.

  • You must clean the heatsink and cpu! The paste is "old" when you exposed it to air after it has been between cpu and heatsink.

  • How I fixed my xbox: threatened to call Chuck Norris. Chris 1 xbox 0.

  • Thanks, everything went smooth. Saved me some cash. Now let's go get a beer.

  • @1969RSCamaro You are correct. Guess someone didn't want people knowing the truth. You get a thumbs up in my book.

  • Great video. My 10 year old boy is happy once again and off my back. LOL Thank you very much for posting this video. Dave

  • Thumbs up if you thought the heat gun was a hair dryer.

  • great video (as always). I just encountered this problem with my xbox have code 0102. I found a quick fix method which so far is working for me. Basically I stick 2 thin screw drivers in the back to prevent the fans from turning. Power up the xbox, wait for the 3 lights to change to 2 lights (indicating an overheat). I then pulled the power, and waited 20 minutes for it to cool. So far it's working again. Transferring the HD to a USB for backup, I'll update with how long this fix lasts.

  • Thanks man, You're the Best!!!!

  • You cant fix it if you fix it he will broke again and.......

  • My Grandsons xbox had the same problem as yours. Error code and all. The 3 red lights, and the light on brick was green.Followed video step by step. After everything was said and done, Still have red lights, but new error code 0002 (Bad Power Supply) light on brick flashes quickly green than steady yellow. Any idea's where I went wrong or what I might be able to do to make this 7 year old kid smile again ???? Thanks in advance for any light you could shine my way...( and I hope it's green : )

  • BE FUN, BE SAFE AND STAY DIRTEY. LEMME PLAY SOME XBOX =D

  • Just last night I followed all the steps laid out in the video and fixed my Xbox. Worked like a charm, thanks!!!

  • how relly tried it

  • okay so my 360's disc tray got stuck and wouldnt open but we found if you lighlty tapped it then it would open but my mom tapped it too hard and the 3 ring of death happened but the next day it worked fine and i was able to play it for a while before it did the 3 ring again but ive turned it on before and it worked fine(too scared to try to play it). am i screwed or can i fix it or should i be able to play it normaly? i really need help cause we dont know what were doing.

  • how often do you get an xbox that you arent able to fix

  • Just a tip, if you have problems remember where everything was, have a camera. Take pictures of everything and refer to them during the put together.

  • Can you play the xbox without the covers on it??

  • @xPRIMExSUSP3CTx yes it just might get dusty inside :)

  • Can any one help me well i have an xbox 360 my problem will be everytime i turn it on it work but without the tv or hd cable connect to it when ever i try to plug in the tv or hd cable a red like come on can any one tell me how to fix this problem thank you

  • Would a hair dryer be an acceptable alternative to a heat gun?

  • @YouCanHazCheezburger i want to know to same thing, did you try it sirs?

  • Errm, just to mention you don't need T10s. Flatheads work just fine when taking apart an XBox.

  • Hi Eric!

My little brother did the towel fix on his (my old one) and forgot about it,his 11 years old btw, and had it on for like 1 hour!

I came home at the time and turned it, its not snowing but its cold here so I did put it outside for like 20 minutes and took it in again, its working good but what damage could it have taken of this, inside the box itself :)?

  • Hey thanks! this really works. Tips for the future:

Only the GPU and 2 inch radius needs to be heated with the heat gun most of the time. That's the part where the connection is faulty. The GPU is the one with the flat heat sinc on top, not the big box looking one. You should still heat the whole thing to stop flexing, but concentrate most of the heat on the GPU. Hope this helps, it took me 3 tries to figure it out...

  • so wut happens to ps3????

  • what the fuck i cant see the video ?! :O

  • great video bro!!!

  • buy compressed air cans and keep you xbox clean, also keep it by a cool area, and not on a floor ( because of dust and hair) kept my xbox alive, i never had rrod

  • I`m a Nintendo Fanboy...This is 1 Little Reason why I i`m Scared to get a 360

  • I don't even own an xbox and I'm scared to try this

  • Make a job out of this; buy red rings on eBAY, fix them, sell them for $300 min

  • it felt like I was in a zombie movie, MY XBOX CAME BCK FRM THA DEAD!!

  • Hey! I have new Xbox 360 that I got for Christmas with kinect sensor 250G and I dont want to have the Red Ring of Death... so when the Red Ring of Death. I wanna know how did you get Red Ring of Death... please and how can I prevent from this.

  • Thank you so much Ericthecarguy! i just finished fixing my xbox with this method and it is working perfectly!

  • Can you use a hairdryer instead of a heat gun?

  • Me and my 10 year old son took apart his xbox 360. We followed these instructions and it fixed RROD...........THANKS!!!....GREAT POST!!......

  • i think u get the red ring of death when u burn out the xboxs motor or somethin

  • You put on way to much thermal paste dude, thats not going to keep it very cool it is supposed to be pretty much metal to metal you should only leave a very thing layer of paste...

  • When youre taking off the thermal paste u dont have to be so careful u can use your finger...

  • the xbox 360 in this video has a Samsung/Toshiba DVD Rom and the Xenon motherboard. this motherboard is the first model and has heat issues. red ring of death is expected with it. if u have this console just go ahead and get some paste lol.

  • Responding to more than 1 person:how to get the red ring of death: getting microsoft's thermal paste pads hot(wat should happen) but M$'s paste isnt good so after a while the heat melts the paste and causes it to bleed out, crack, and get weak spots, causing weak connections, red ring u get. if u try to fix it and the fans kick up and console shuts off, tighten ur screws holdin in heatsinks. if uve done that 'penny trick, undo it'.dont overheat ur console with towels. just replace the paste.

  • i got the red ring and i try to fix it, when i turned it on the circle turns green for a few seconds then the fan spins really fast and two red lights turn on. Why does it do that?

  • This is so cool

  • i will need all cables cause i have the slim not old one

  • im trying to start a repair shop but im 13 and i need a broken rrod xbox to start with so if anyone does not want to buy all the thermal paste and stuff i will be more than willing to take yours as a practice system and when its fixed i will happily send back for free.

but their is a 15% chance i could by accident mess something up and make the system un-repairable. but if you are willing to take that chance just shoot me a message on youtube and we can talk about it more. read next part

  • I did this video step by step, replaced the neoprene washers with ones I made myself with a more foam like washer. My 360 has been working perfectly for the last 2 months. The most important parts are the tube of silver stuff and making sure you get it hot enough when using the heat gun... Thank you so much for the video. Even tho I bought a new 360 anyway, but now I have 2!

  • Getting those X-Clamps off was really stressful for me, you made it look so easy!

  • this is crazy but it worked so thanks and it saved me 325 off the top but i still went and coped another one and also my lady friend watched ya video and fixed her but now her joystick's wont work at all u wouldn't happen to know why? can u post an answer so she can get on with her gamer life

  • @MrCash518 that circuit board with 3 screws in the front with the lights(rf board) is probably not plugged in all the way.

  • best video on fixing the red ring of death. hope I can fix mine too.

    Thanks.

  • will this work for 2 red rings?

  • How do u get the red ring of death? cuz i just got a xbox 360 (250gig) with kinect, and i dont want the ring of death. xbox is frickin awesome. I wana know how do u get the ring of death so i dont do it. or does it just happen after a couple years or months?

  • @Zankronka1 it happens when you play it too much. it basically overheats and you either need to repair it yourself like he's doing, or you need to send it in to xbox. im assuming you have the new xbox 360 slim so you dont have to worry about it. it cannot get the red rings.

  • @Zankronka1 I've had one of those for about 6 months and haven't had any problems yet.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Is there a homemade substitute for the paste? :/

  • @Zankronka1 it happends when your xboxes harddrive overheats

  • @Zankronka1 u cant get it on the newer xbox

  • @Zankronka1 hey the new xbox should not get the red ring, only the old ones . I've had 4 old xboxes all got the red ring so i bought the new version .

  • @Zankronka1 the RED RING OF DEATH HAPPEN BEACUSE OVERHEATING SO BUY A COOLER FAN AT AMAZON,PIRATED GAMES AND MOVIES AND PIRATED XBOX LIVES SUCH LIKE THAT ,

  • @Zankronka1 it happens from too much heat, xbox says that they've fixed the problem for good, but if you wanna be safe turn it off for 30 mins every 3-4 hours of playing, or buy an intercooler

  • @Zankronka1 Its impossible to get RROD on the XBOX Slim, coz they fixed the issue as it gets too hot, it will turn off automatically, plus the system is more cool efficient now with less Heat sinks and bigger and better fan cooling system, i would have nothing to worry about,

  • @Zankronka1 it was a problem on the old systems i dont think the new ones get it. the old one did it because they over heated due to the glue they used or something like that. it was a system error thing. mine just got it this morning -_- i've had it for a little over a year

  • @Zankronka1 I believe its caused by a number of heating/cooling cycles (from using the xbox) which over time causes the solders to crack. Its unavoidable as far as I can tell. I have had it happen to 2 xbox 360s and 1 ps3 (yellow light of death). The difference between the two is that I had the ps3 for 6 years before it happened, where as it happened to both xbox's with 18 months

  • that's what's called xbox surgery

  • I hate xbox try ps3

  • I hope this does not happen to mine... It's 250 gig :( but I dunno if it happens to the new ones... Heard Microsoft fixed it? I unno. Hope I never find out :/

  • Bought Xbox Elite ;D

  • ericthecarguy.. using pennies, what do use to stick them in the papaer with ??? i dont have any small heatsinks.

  • my laptop does not have sound

  • does it work?

  • WTF you do that on metal table ?

  • @BunkerPBA All kinds of dirty things. :)

  • @EricTheCarGuy Would it involve no Trojan brand condoms whatsoever and a hot girlfriend?

  • Thanks man u fixed my xbox 360!!!!!!!!!

  • I have a trick to prevent this, just put a fan by your Xbox. I know it sounds ghetto but it will keep it from overheating.

  • @rizzy252 Not a bad idea, thanks for the tip.

  • @EricTheCarGuy No Problem :)

  • @EricTheCarGuy

i ended up getting a new xbox. tried to heat gun it to reflow the solder, but it didnt work, and had a fan for it, still didnt work. the fan was in it before it red ringed. thanks for your help though, you are awesome!

  • @EricTheCarGuy Hey Eric! Have you picked up Forza 4 yet?

  • @rizzy252 intercooler... one that has a seperate power supply. best 20 bucks you will ever spend if you own a console

  • @turkeyguy0 Or get one of the newer models that has a cooler built in it

  • kids just stay off line you wont get the ring of death..... the red ring of death is a virus download and its in the software . how the fuck do you think they make there money.. ive had it happen to pc s playstations and xboxes but now i dont play online both my xbox and playstation have lasted over 3 years . well touch wood

  • I'll have a slim xobox 360 250gb xbox for Christmas this is 2011 it can have the red ring of death? please answer me!

  • @Petrcify I've had mine for about 6 months with no problems so far.

  • i just fixed you have just earned a sub

  • @gmodfilms1 Thank you!

  • Haha that's good I don't have a Xbox it has good games but the ring of death I have ps3

  • hey, thanks. I've used your exact approach to fix a friend's dead laptop today. Much to my surprise, it actually brought the mainboard of the laptop back to life.

  • you know that when the red ring of death occurs, turn on the xbox and let the red light flash. Then use something to stop the fan from running, then wait until 2 lights are flashing, and then unplug the console and let it cool down. You do not need to open the xbox 360, and it will not void the warranty.

  • We are getting 2 rings and it still doesn't work. The fans are spinning, the lights are on, but when we go to restart it , well nothing.

  • @zachmasters do you have to re-flow before adding the silver, or does it even matter

  • @zachmasters Try pulling the code and see what you get, it might be that your AV cable isn't plugged in all the way.

  • It works!!! Unusable xbox now fixed and playing again!!! Thank you

  • i have my xbox liek 2years and today i had the red ring of death cuz i stapped on my accu cabel so my xbox gots the red reing of death and then 1min later its fixed haha
