I know people can hate.. but I have to say I'm amazed the camera has the processing power to even put out video on external monitor. That is a huge feat in itself.
550d, 600d, 60d and 5d mk 2 all drop to sd output via hdmi in record mode BUT 7d is only one that maintains hd out in record mode. Don't know about other Canons
I am deciding on either a Canon 60d or Nikon D7000.
Are you saying that if you connect an external monitor, the Canon will record it to SD card as 480p or do you see it in 480p whilst it records in 1950p
@thatniggbeme7 From every thing that I have read and seen, the video quality is identical (and that includes the 7D). The main differences are flip-out screen, manual audio control, and about $400.00 with the basic kit lens.
@630alpha I know, that's why I've been so confused. I read everywhere on the internet that it will drop to 480. I will feel so dumb that if I'd post a video, that suddenly I'd come to the conclusion that mine is just the same! I've not got an awesome studio like you to test it, but I'll try to show it rather sooner than later :)
@630alpha I see now that you made a new video on Vimeo, showing that de 7D DOES put out 1080p. I had made a video reply for you but it seems that I'm too late, so I won't upload it :P
Anyway, perfect moment to say: "HAH! Toldyouso!" ;-)
I have NOT got this with my 7D. It doesn't even go black when I go into record mode like your 60D does, it stays in 1080i. I've checked this on a 42" FullHD TV and my first thought was that it might be sending a 480SD image that is simply 'masked' as a 1080 signal. But the resolution and sharpness is so great (and doesn't change when I hit record) that it must be 1080i.
Have you tried fiddling around with the settings and with the INFO button? This changes the view mode on the external display.

I have a canon 60d and tried to connect to my tv via hdmi. But I can not, the TV signal goes black. I bought a mini HDMI-HDMI HAMA, can you help?

@DavideoDesign Thanks, this video was done when the 60D was first released. People had questions back then.

@darrenrodway i think it records it at 1080 or whatever you have it set on. You just see it in standard def on the lcd screen while recording :)

Can you throw up a video of your setup to show us your output?
Would that be too much to ask?
From what I am reading, everyone with a 7D & 550D has the drop to 480 once that record button is hit.
Yours would be the first otherwise.
