The love scene is a favourite of mine. I think it's so emotionally moving; the way it was acted. After 25 years and with five daughters, they knew they were in love. It just took them longer to say it.
The "Do You Love Me?" sequence has always been my favorite. It's masterfully acted by both -- I especially love watching Golde's expressions throughout the sequence.
Oh my goodness Perchik (sorry if I am misspelling it) that has to be one of the most insulting yet successful proposals I've ever heard. Successful, but insulting. And xD HA HA! Tevye had that "where's my shotgun?" look when he saw them holding hands!
@Sshelly34213 - In some cultures, society places great value on the role of parents. They generally believe that if it wasn't for the parent(s)/guardian(s), their loved ones wouldn't have turned out as well as they did. So as a sign of gratitude and respect, they seek permission or blessing from the parent(s)/guardian(s). This is done in order to preserve strong family ties. However, none of this will take place unless the couple decides on getting married first :)
@Sshelly34213 - :) I totally understand where you're coming from. But when you say "modern society and culture, " you're basically referring to the junk that the media dumps on the minds of today's youths to mold a new culture. Sometimes it is good to go out there and see for yourself just how these "old world" cultures work harmoniously with family and efficiently with natural resources, while our "modern societies" get a lot more greedy, arrogant and careless.
@remoteoutofcontrol What? Are you talking about pop culture? I'm not particularly certain what you mean "what the media dumps on me." I don't watch the news, I don't even read papers to be honest. So what media source is influencing me today?
I don't have money to travel around the world, I'm also not a fan of traveling. Not that I don't like meeting different types of people and seeing new cultures, I just hate the traveling part of it.
@remoteoutofcontrol I actually do know a lot about other cultures to be honest and I respect them, but there are certain things I don't like about certain cultures. I especially dislike their conservative attitude toward what men/women/parents/children should be like. I'm just a progressive person by nature.
The communal lifestyle of some, the dance, music, food, beliefs etc...of these cultures is something quite exciting to me personally.
@Sshelly34213 - You know what, you are absolutely right. At its best, cultures can only act as general guides in soceity. It is individuals, like you and me, who ultimately decide what is good for ourselves. For me, I tend to practice certain values from different cultures that I perceive to be beneficial/good, while ignoring the rest. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your thoughts on this matter. Cheers :)
@remoteoutofcontrol I completely disagree. After all, parents often don't always have their children's best interests. Besides, it seems a bit sexist, like a girl can't decide for herself. If a couple truly loves each other, it seems a bit cruel to say they can't get married.
"I love you" - Forget those 25 years - I wonder how many people can say that after 10 years of marriage.... Tevje and Golde had such a difficult beginning and yet, they've learned to love each other not even knowing about this.
I think my favorite part of the movie is when he asks Golda " Do you love me?" and they are sitting on the bed together. After 25 years just discovering they love each other. So adorable!
"He likes you but you'll going away and your staying here. So have a nice trip perchik and i hope you'll be very happy and my answer is NO." LOL I love that. "But Tevye we are not asking for your pormision only for your blessing. We ARE going to get married." Burn
so about twice a year in my orchestra class we'd watch this movie i guess b/c it had the word fiddler on it, idk, but i'd always hope that we'd get to that "do u love me?" part but the bell always rang too soon. we only got their once. it's my favorite part!! and now i get to watch it!
Me too!
