  • Beyond 17 miles, most people begin to hit the wall and that's why the times deteriorate so much during those final miles. Because speed training works the fast twitch muscle fiber, a long distance runner can utilize those muscles during the final miles to keep his speed from suffering. Many distance runners are unaware of the need of these muscle fibers once the body starts to rely more on fats for fuel. They help to stabilize your stride in the final miles just when you need it.

  • Wow, 3:29 finish is great. Cut 14 minutes off and he qualifies for the Boston in his age group.

  • Alex needs a 3:10 to qualify for Boston.

  • 20 minutes is doable over a period of 2 years. Especially if he continues long runs and does speed training on and off the track (speed training will help with anaerobic metabolism). I was a competitive long distance runner at one time. Its a great accomplishment to complete a marathon, no matter what the time but a 3:29 time is a very good starting point for any runner.

  • 1:38 at half marathon distance not too bad!

  • 1:38:31 is his half-marathon PB. His split time here was 1:38:43!
